    1. [THEATRE-UK] Beerbohm Tree - Chapman
    2. Warren McLean
    3. G'day all, I am hoping someone may be able to help me with additional information regarding 3 sisters who played on the London stage. Their father was am India house official with a surname of Beerbohm which is Dutch? for Berry tree. The sisters: Ellen married Charles Kean. Anne married John Kemble Chapman. (she's mine) Ann Maria married name was Bradshaw. The family believe that Ann Marie sang 'Home sweet home' for the first time on stage. These sisters used the stage surname of Tree and were singers and actresses around the 1830's. Anne's son John Plunkett Chapman emigrated to South Australia and had 17 children in 2 marriages. Any confirmation of the facts above or additional information will be greatly appreciated. Regards Warren - Thunderstorm outside in Adelaide, Australia. 1. [THEATRE-UK] Acrobat & Actor
    2. Hi Everyone, I am trying to find some theatre records of my grandfather, Ernest LOCKWOOD, AKA Robert LOCKWOOD, Ernest L. ROSAIRE, and Robert ROSAIRE. He was born in St Pancras, Middlesex in Nov 1870. In the 1881 census he was at an uncle's house in Bromley, possibly as an apprentice House Builder. The next sign I find of him is in 1892 when he arrived in New York City with a troop of acrobats. The group was probably called "The Rosaires" or something similar, since all used the surname ROSAIRE. They seemed to have coupled this with their given name and the first initial of their true surname. Others in the group were: Gus E. (35), Fred H. (23), Will H. (19) and Thomas M. (19). He traveled back and forth between England and the United States until 1905 when he settled in the US He married Lillian V. (Lilly) JARVIS, an English girl who was also supposed to be connected to Show Business. He spent his whole life in Show Business, but I only know of two specifics. One is for April 1910 when he shared the stage somewhere in New York City with Joe E. Brown and the other is in April 1924 at the Powers Theatre in Chicago. Here he played the role of the donkey, Dapple in Otis Skinner's "Sancho Panza". I would love to hear from anyone with any knowledge of his career. Good hunting to all, Ron Migliore

    1. [THEATRE-UK] Maria Withers/Thompson
    2. Sanders, Robert (NATED - TFM3)
    3. A collateral ancestor of my wife was a lady named Maria Withers. She was heiress to a bequest of £1000 from her uncle c.1798 and this attracted the attentions of a James Thom(p)son with whom she and her mother and brothers were lodging in London. She was a ward of court with her mother as her guardian. It is a long story but James Thompson married her without her mother's consent, when she was only 14, by getting a license from the church when he stated that she was over 21 ! There was a long court case and he was sent to gaol in the Fleet Prison and when he came out he disappeared to America. The Times newspaper says in a much later reference that Maria Withers or Thom(p)son then went on the stage for some years and made a considerable amount of money as an actress. In 1826 in Bristol she married a second time to a surgeon named Mathias O'Hara. Presumably she was on the stage in the period c.1800 - 1826, perhaps under the name Maria Withers or Maria Thom(p)son. Another possible name might have been Maria Baker as her father was a Richard Baker who, at some point, took the name Withers probably after inheriting some money from that family. Being an actress she could have used any of these names or maybe something quite different ! If anyone has come across or comes across in future anyone of one of these names I should be most interested to hear. I have had a search carried out by the University of Bristol in their theatrical collection but they were unable to find any references. But of course she could turn up anywhere ! Regards to all members Bob Sanders Cardiff Wales

    1. [THEATRE-UK] re Vivien Leigh:
    2. Hello there, This is my first posting having just joined. I am interested in Vivien Leigh of "Gone With the Wind" fame (amongst others). I have a bit of information if anyone is interested but I would like to know more about her. My cousins and I have always been brought up to think that she was the cousin of my grandmother. The truth of this hangs on the fact as to which of the gentlemen stated as "father" is my grandmother's true blood line. One way or another Viven has a connection but is it blood? I shall get shot in true western fashion for breaking any illusions (grin)! On the other hand I would rather know the truth. Yours, Julia (WADE nee ABDEY)

    1. [THEATRE-UK] A message from the List Administator
    2. Dave
    3. Hi everybody, Well, I am absolutely delighted with the way the list is growing. At the last count, there were 71 subscribers - that's not bad going!!! I am also very pleased to see so many knowledgeable people willing to share information. It has always been my intention for THEATRE-UK to be *YOUR* mailing list - so, I would like to hear *your* views on the following - I have been asked if I would be willing to integrate another list with THEATRE-UK. It would mean we would be joined by about 130 more subscribers. I suggested, and he has agreed, that we could also use his excellent web-site as our 'home' Below is part of Paul's reply which sets out his main concern. "My only concern is that whilst my list caters <<primarily>> for UK-based research there are those outside the strict terms of the theatre - viz; gypsy, travellers etc... and, although requests seem mainly to fall within the "UK" terms they are not always. It's really a question of how people see THEATRE-UK in those terms." Tell me what you think. Dave Jassie [email protected]

    1. [THEATRE-UK] My Introduction.
    2. CAROLE CUMBER
    3. As suggested by the list administrator I am introducing the person I am researching,She was Bessie BELLWOOD aka Elizabeth Ann Katherine MAHONEY born in Monkstone Ireland in either 1857 or 1860,I know quite a bit about her stage cereer but very little about her personal life.I have yet to find a birth or baptism,so I do not know her parents names. She was reported to have been married to a Jack Nicholson,no record found, she died at the age of 36 or 39 but again I am still searching for a record.Although born in Ireland she was raised in the New Cut Bermondsey and was performing in that area as a girl.I would really like to find her link to my Great Grandmother who was born Mary MAHONEY and had several items, pictures and programs from her "cousin" Bessie. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more about this elusive lady. Carole.

    1. [THEATRE-UK] Hi, Everybody.
    2. Jonathan Rhodes
    3. Dave, the list organiser, suggested that I should introduce myself. My name is Jonathan and I am 'in the biz'. I am also a historian with a passionate interest in the history of the theatre. Don't get me wrong, I am not a guru on the subject but I do have some specialist knowledge particularly on the following subjects: Ivor Novello. Gilbert & Sullivan. Noel Coward. Rodgers & Hammerstein. Most of this is to do with people who were in the original shows. Throw me a question and I will see what I can find. Meanwhile, find out about me at: http://www.youthmusicals.co.uk or for genealogical interests: http://jonathanrhodes.homestead.com Cheers, Jonathan

    1. Re: [THEATRE-UK] Sir Harry Lauder
    2. Jean McCarthy
    3. Dear Nettie, Thank you very much for your response to my enquiry about Sir Harry Lauder & Co. I am hoping to be able to search some old newspapers shortly so perhaps I might get lucky. No I never did find my grandfather in the 1881 census. I found him at four years old in the 1851 census for Ireland. The next record of him is in Belfast on my Dad’s birth certificate in 1903. I know his wife (my grandmother Elizabeth Bowden unmarried at the time) emigrated to New Zealand in December 1891 with her mother and siblings. I found Elizabeth in the Women’s Voters lists in New Zealand in 1894 & 1896. She evidently returned to Ireland some time between 1896 and 1903 when my Dad was born. I have been searching in the Southern Hemisphere for nearly four years now for any records of my grandfather William Moore as well as his marriage to Elizabeth Bowden. (circa 1900) I have not succeeded in either quest yet. I found William in the Belfast 1911 census living with Elizabeth and my Dad. Twelve days after the census Elizabeth died. William was present at the death. Two years after that my Dad was put in an orphanage in 1913. In 1915 William died. So I am not doing very well with my research on my grandparents. I have found other generations going further back. Unbelievably just a couple of days ago I got a photograph of Elizabeth and a photograph of William’s father (my great grandfather) Charles Moore. I just cannot seem to pin down this Scarlet Pimpernel of mine. I really appreciate you taking the trouble to write to me. Thank you very much indeed. If you can think of anything else I would be terribly grateful to you. Once again Sincere Thanks. Jean
