Anyone out there familiar with Harry TATE and his "Motoring" sketches, or "Mrs. Whigs", and the "Cabbage Patch"? My great-uncle, Thomas Vincent Brown, born 1888 Wallasey, evidently was a part of these sketches, and travelled with this troupe when they toured the States. His stage name was TOM SHANNON. I am trying to determine when that would have been - my guess is in the early 1920's. I know very little about Tom and what other work he might have done, so any help is greatly appreciated. What records do they have at the Westminster Archives? I'll be visiting there soon. Thanks. Christine, USA

Hi from Oz Can someone please tell me whether and where there is/was an "Elizabethan Theatre" in London? My husband's grandfather Montague Court supposedly was a Shakesperian actor at that theatre, with Sir Martin Harvey, in approx 1914. We are trying to discover more about this in connection with our family research and would be grateful for any lead that would help us to follow up this "memory" Thank you from Val
Although these people are not relatives of mine there is a connection through my grandparents. They were Esther and Will Alley and they lived in London from around 1915-1920. My grandfather loved the theatre and took part in many amateur productions. Apparently they were either friends of or my grandmother house-sat for Oscar Ashe and Lily Brayton in London. I think perhaps as friends as my grandmother used to tell the story of how when she was at their flat a producer called asking to speak to them and he was very rude to my grandmother when she said they were not available. To which she replied to him "Well, I know a damn sight more than you do as I know where they are and you don't" and hung up the phone. Does anyone on the list have any information about these actors? I know they took part in a number of Shakespearian productions and I got acting information from the Internet but no personal stuff. Kay Prosser Victoria, BC

Hi all, For those of you researching ancestors who were on stage in London in the mid 1800's, this book is wonderful. It is the diary of one of London's greatest theatre critics with notes by his son and was written IN the 1800's. It details a great many of the shows he saw as well as a good deal of personal information about some of the actors and actresses of the day (or comedians as they were called - funny or not) who played in London (and some provincial) theatres. Because he did the critiques for the paper, it also has obituaries, tragedies and successes of many of them as well as their relatives. It is OLD and you will almost certainly have to get it from your library's archives. The Victorian State Library (Australia) does have a copy. It is obviously a little known and used resource here as, despite it's age, the copy I had still had many pages uncut from the original printing. I am going to write to Rod Neap and see if he can include it in his CD Archives http://www.archivecdbooks.com/main.htm as it really is one of the very best. Please let me (or Rod) know if you would support this as I am sure Rod would need to know if it is going to benefit just one or two or many. Title: The life and reminiscences of E.L. Hello Stuart I was delighted to see the name of Dave Morris who I met many times during his appearing on the North Pier in Blackpool towards the end of the war and afterwards. My cousins Johnny Walker and his wife Del were great great friends od Dave's. Johnny retired from the stage and went into business in Manchester. He and Del had an apartment on the North Promenade in Blackpool where they stayed each summer. Johnny was very well known among the theatre folk there and spent a lot of time with Dave Morris. I spent many a happy hour watching the shows on the pier. Not in the audience but from back stage where I used to climb what seemed like hundreds of wooden stairs to get to the top and look down. One of the treats I loved was to go shopping with Johnny and Del I was only about sixteen at the time. They were quite a conspicuous pair. He was always dressed immacuately in grey pinstripe trousers, black coat and stock tie in which he wore a large diamond pin. On his finger a large diamond ring. Del would wear her mink and a load of diamonds jewellery. Quite a resplendent pair as I remember. We always had lunch at the Tower restaurant. A splendid place really with potted palms and gypsy orchestra with the gypsy violinist serenading diners at their tables. Ah! what lovely memories .. starts me thinking of many others I have of Blackpool entertainment. Perhaps for another time. Thankyou Stuart ... Marjorie .. a Mancunian Kiwi
Hello all - my Great Grandfather played at the Royal Muncaster Theatre in Bootle, Liverpool around the early 1900's. His name was Patrick McDONALD, he used to sing and play the penny whistle. I have managed to find information on the theatre. Apparantly, it was the first purpose built theatre in Bootle, Liverpool and opened in October 1890. It was re-named the New Prince's Theatre in 1912 and in 1921 was opened as the Strand cinema, which closed in the late 1940's. If anyone can help me find more information about my Great Grandfather I would be very grateful. Many thanks Sonja Brown
Hello all, I am new to this list but am on several others. I wonder if anyone has ever heard of a man named RoderickWALKER or a woman named Peal CLEGG. They are both names recalled by my great-aunt who wrote to me (in 1983): "Now my mother had a cousin Maud King, Point Clare NSW Australia and Pearl Clegg and Roderick Walker lived nearby in Australia. Pearl Clegg was in vaudeville in England & Roderick Walker a tightrope walker owned a circus in Australia." I have no idea where else to go to try and track down information on these people. The mother is question was my great-grandmother, Maud JEFFERY b. Nottingham 1888. This would mean, I feel sure, that the cousin, Maud KING of Point Clare NSW would be long gone but I wonder if there are any relatives who I might be intouch with. Has anyone ever heard of the tightrope walker or the vaudevillian? Never know... TIA LSimons
Does anyone know where I should go to find any available information on the following. Legend has it that Amy Capenerhurst was a well-known music hall pianist in Leicester, probably in the early 1900s. Legend also has it that she was given some sort of honour such as "Madam" or "Dame". But this is as much information as I have. 30 years ago my father in law did a bit of family history research because both he and his wife were claiming that this lady was connected to their family. I'm very glad he did because he obtained a lot of information from family members who are long since gone. However, nothing much on Amy. The only Amy Capenerhurst who I have in the tree was married to Joseph Leon Capenerhurst in 1916. They never had any children and so it is possible that this is her and she was able to follow a career. The Kellys directory of 1938 mentions a Miss Amy Capenerhurst, teacher of elocution at 33 Lincoln Street Leicester. This could be her. Capenerhurst is not a common name and we have documented all the families in Leicester up until 1900. Roll on the 1901. Joseph and Amy were at 51 Highway Road Thurmaston later and probably she died around 1969 and him around 1970 If anyone could point me in the right direction I should be grateful. I haven't yet managed to get to Leicester yet to enquire at the records office. Pauline,
