Janice has very kindly offered to look for your relatives in the book described below. Please reply to her directly at [email protected] Dear Dave, The book I have is 'The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Gilbert and Sullivan Operas: A Record of Productions 1875-1961' complied by Cyril Rollins and R. John Witts, publ.1962. It is a most comprehensive listing of the performances, tours, actors, actresses, administrative, musical staff, composers, authors and librettists with cast list, performance dates in London, New York and provincial tours. It includes the performances of all shows from the days when the company was called the Comedy Opera Company and encompasses all the operas, including those NOT by Gilbert and Sullivan. For example, if your Great Uncle was a gent called Richard Smith, I could tell you that he was the stage manager in the No.1 Company's production of Patience in 1882 and also played the solicitor ( a non-singing role) in March. They were on tour from March 6 to December 16 and I could tell you which city they were in on any given night! He had toured as Stage Manager the year before with the B company and Pirates of Penzance. What a life! No more that three weeks anywhere from January to December! A lovely reference book and I will be happy to do any lookups Janice Toowoomba Dave Jassie - List Administrator THEATRE-UK [email protected] Greetings from Lincoln, England
Thanks Suzy. I've not been able to find much information about this theatre and people who performed there. I've been trying to find anything that mentions my Great Grandfather, Pat or Patrick McDonald who played there but I don't know where to start looking. Hello Everyone As a new subscriber I'd like to post my interests My great grandfather William Mower AKHURST married Ellen TULLY on 26 October 1845 in Parish of St George Bloomsbury Middlesex. Ellen was described as an actress and W.M. as a warehouseman. Ellen TULLY I believe, was the daughter of Thomas TULLY a musician and was born in Guildford W.M. and Ellen left for Australia in 1849 and lived first in Adelaide and then Melbourne until returning to U.K. in 1870. W.M. died on board ship when returning to Australia in 1878 W.M. was a prolific writer of burlesque and produced a new pantomime practically every Christmas while in Australia. During the years in U.K. 1870-1878 he wrote pantomimes for Astley's, The Pavilion and the Elephant & Castle Theatres Any information regarding the parentage of W.M. and Ellen and any details of their early careers would be most welcome. Thank you Gretta Lucas

Hi Adrienne You don't give any dates so it's difficult to place her. Did you know that there is/was a soprano who used to sing at Sadlers Wells in the 50's called Marion Studholme? Could be/have been Marie's granddaughter... Hi all Can anyone suggest how I can find out more about the theatrical career of the Ruth Gower. She was born 29 January 1912 in Pontypridd where her father was a clergyman. She died 21 August 1987 at the New Victoria Hospital, Kingston upon Thames. All I have is an undated newspaper cutting stating that she is at present with the Royal Opera House, Cairo. 'She left this country recently with a selected English company, sent on a tour to various places where there are British colonies, by the Churnivisky Bureau. The company, who have a repertoire of ten plays have just reached Cairo. Among other centres to be covered are Alexandria, Malta and Gibraltar.' >From her photograph which accompanies the article this was in the late 1920's/ early 1930's. It also states that ' for the past few years she had been following a stage and film career with remarkaable success.' Bye for now Joy Any suggestions at to where I can find out more about this lady would be most welcome.
Hello Susan, What sort of information? Regards, K http://willgooseweb.accessgenealogy.com
Hi, Everyone, Am new to the list. I am trying to find info regarding my grandfather, Robert Chilvers, and his parents. Family legend has it his parents, David and Minnie Chilvers, were stage actors in England. I have nothing to back that up with, and was wondering, has anyone ever heard of them? I would guess the time frame would be the 1920's or maybe later. They were in this country by 1934 for sure. Cathy in Michigan

He married Harriet Sheppard in 1880 and they had four children, two girls Mabel & Peggy & two boys, names not known. One of the daughters may have gone on the stage. Regards, Denis Harrison. 1202 hrs BST 18/05/01. ****Original message**** I am looking for information for family history research on the family name Harrison. My great uncle Charles Harrison born abt 1860 and died in 1943 was stated in Whos Who to have been a child actor before becoming a famous cartoonist/carricaturist, the entry states "he was a child actor and came from a theatrical family". I have information on his artistic career but do not know of his theatrical activities. I believe he played a child part with a famous actor in the 1860`s plus. Hope you can help me.
Hello. Would some one by chance have a picture of the Cardinal lady who played in Dances With Wolves? It could be scanned to me if you have one. We are related thru the Trembaly family. Thank you. Viola.

Hi Everyone. My aunt was Jane/Jenny Cowell aka Jane/Jenny Woodhouse. She was born May 1,1889 in Bolton,Laancashire. She was married to John Speakman about 1916. She apparently sang in Opera Houses in and around the Bolton area in her younger days.I have seen old family photos of her onstage in beautiful gowns and big lovely hats with ostrich feathers, but this is about all I know.Has anyone come aross this name? Kind regards, Dee In cold and rainy Ontario,Canada
I'm glad I've found this list as I've got a young woman called Agnes DOYLE who started her acting career in Sydney Australia in a play called Voice of the Turtle. After a short while she travelled to England and America to appear in shows over there. Agnes was born in 1906 in Sydney, ands it was about 1930 that she took off overseas to continue her acting. Has anyone come across Agnes? By her photo she was quite tall about 5ft 7, and very slim, perhaps she was a dancer. If anyone has any bright ideas on how I can trace her they would be very much appreciated. Cecile
I am looking for my aunt, Hectnor McKenzie, born 17 Jun !900 in Teeswater, Ontario, Canada, daughter of John McKenzie and Eva Gertrude Robinson. She apparently went to London in the 1920s(?) to go on the stage. She may have changed her name. Does anyone recognise this lady? Regards Peter Ferguson
Hi all, I have a William ROGERS (2) born approx 1858 who told us (on his marriage certificate in 1886) that his father was William ROGERS (1) - occupation -Theatrical. The son of William ROGERS (2) was William ROGERS (3) born 1900 who told us(on his marriage certificate) that HIS father was a theatrical artist. Family history says there was a connection with Sadlers Wells. It also says the family came from London. I have found no proof of any of this despite following one William Rogers of Sadlers Wells fame right through his career to his death and getting his will which shows no children. I have found another William Rogers in Bethnal Green in the 1840's who gives his occupation as Comedian who WAS married with children but disappears around the time the other makes an appearance and I cannot link the two of them nor mine to either. Any suggestions? I am currently conducting a contiguous search of the 1891 census for William Rogers (3) around Coventry and London so if anyone spots him I would love to know about it. I am still trying to find his birthplace, he would be about 33 and married to Catherine or Kate aged about 24, no children . Mary Mary Rogers <[email protected]> Bendigo Australia
GDay Dave and fellow listers.. Thankyou for the welcome Dave, could be a chance for me to add a few more names to the tree. I am aged 74 with lots of grandchildren/grtgrandchildren asking questions so would welcome any info from the List. Cyrus Bell was married to my maternal Gran's sister, thus grt'Uncle and Aunt. Together with George Formby Snr and Barnaby Parsons they had a Troupe of Nigger Minstrels at Blackpool. My Grt Aunt was called AnnaBella. This was circa 1890.This and other info came in a letter from a Mr Geoff Mellor of Bradford after i had published a letter in the CALL BOY mag'. This was 1982 when i first started my Tree. He asked me to follow up by contacting a Kathleen Eyre, the Fylde Historian.Evidently she had written about Cyrus Bell many years before. Like a fool, I never did contact her. So over there somewhere is info that i would dearly like. Geoff mentioned that after the Troupe broke up " Barnaby Parsons and George Formby went on Stage to become famous. I believe Cyrus Bell was also connected with Circus folk because my Mother used to tell us tales of him walking on Bamboo stilts playing a Big Drum. He would lean over the audience( the stilts bending) and the drum and sticks would fall on strings, no doubt a shock to them underneath, HaHa!. Mum, prior to WW1 toured in Wardrobe, if i remember, with the parents of Mr Bob Monkhouse?. Now if any of you kind folk could point me to any little ' Bells ' (one was Connie, believe she went to USA) or snippets of info' I await your welcome mail, thankyou and regards ......
