Hi Dave,I personally would be interested in the project you mention as I have been unable to find an entry(in the parts I have been able to search) of my ancestor Bessie BELLWOOD aka Elizabeth/Katherine MAHONEY although I know she was performing on the music hall stage during that time frame(1881 census) Carole. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dave <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2001 9:36 AM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] Web-site - suggestions please > Hi everybody, > I am in the process of building a simple little web-site dedicated > primarily to the topics defined for discussion on THEATRE-UK. > Firstly, I am currently extracting all 1881 British census, and 1851 > Devon, Norfolk and Warwickshire census records of entertainment, circus > and theatre related folk. > Before I go any further, would the final results be of any use to > anybody? > Also, if anyone has any useful URLs that I could include on the site, > please send them to me privately. > > Dave Jassie - List Administrator THEATRE-UK > [email protected] > > Greetings from Lincoln, England > > "It's one of the tragic ironies of the theatre that only one man in it > can count on steady work - the night watchman" > Tallulah Bankhead (1903-68) > > > > > > ==== THEATRE-UK Mailing List ==== > Please post your reply to the list (except for personal mail) > Your message could be of interest to other subscribers. > > ============================== > Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: > Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. > http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com >
Hi everybody, I am in the process of building a simple little web-site dedicated primarily to the topics defined for discussion on THEATRE-UK. Firstly, I am currently extracting all 1881 British census, and 1851 Devon, Norfolk and Warwickshire census records of entertainment, circus and theatre related folk. Before I go any further, would the final results be of any use to anybody? Also, if anyone has any useful URLs that I could include on the site, please send them to me privately. Still looking for information on the Theater Royal on Argyle Street, Birkenhead. It burned down in the early 1930's. Would like information on an actor/actresses with the name Page, Vowles or Irlam, or information on musicians of the same name. Butler Stanhope and J. Vowles were the lessees of the Theater in the late 1800s. Any information on the Stanhopes might help too. Thanks, Norma in Texas
Hi, I'm searching for any information on a Peggy (Margaret) Thompson who apparently was a dancer she lived around London and had a relative who also was a performer of some kind....I don't have a lot of info as you can gather. Janet Smith Australia
> > I have been told that a MARIE STUDHOLME (MARION LUPTON) edwardian musical comedy actress was a relative. Possibly the illigitimate daughter of my Gt Grandads sister. I'm doing family research and would like to know more. I would love Hello Adrienne, I don't have any information on MARIE STUDHOLME but I bought some old postcards at a boot fair last Sunday and one is of her. It is a beautiful full face photo so you would be able to see any family resemblance. The stamp on the back is dated 1905 so the photo must have been taken prior to that. If you are happy to receive a jpeg attachment I can scan it and email it to you. Best regards, Barbara
Hi listers, I was one of the early listers and posted a message inquiring about an actor Bernard LEE, born 1908. It was suggested that I look in Who's Who in the theatre, and there was a quite a write up on his performances in Theatre & "M" in a Bond movie. I am now searching for his death & any descendants. John from Melbourne
I am writing to see if anyone on the list can offer information about the popular nigger minstrel troupes (somewhat politically *incorrect* as a term today!:-) who were performing in the UK during the 1880s through to the turn of the century. My particular interest is in trying to get information on a great grandfather, James MITCHELL. The family oral tradition is that, from a fairly well-to-do family, he ran away from school (Cheltenham?) to go on the stage. He was a very competent musician - particularly the banjo, and always described himself as a *vocalist* on his children's birth certificates, etc. It would seem that he was in London for the 1881 census and for ten years or so was involved in performing, but by 1891 was married and in Swindon, Wilts. Because of his determination to cut himself off from his family he seems to have given a different birthplace in the census returns. He may have been born in London, Bristol or even the Isle of Wight / Portsmouth. I have just about given up trying to trace his family, but thought it might be interesting to discover something about his background on the stage. My family always told of him being with George Elliott the *original chocolate-coloured coon*. If any one can offer any information or suggested reading I'd be very grateful. Steve, Swindon, Wilts.
Hello Carrie, Just a silly bit of info for you - in our family if my sister or I were being a bit "above ourselves" my mother used to refer to us as "Gladys Cooper". Gladys was a very great lady of the theatre and a famous beauty. My father played the clarinet in the orchestra pit at the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield for over thirty years. He met my mother whilst playing in the orchestra in a cinema in Chesterfield where she was the cashier. It is often believed that during the silent movie era a piano accompanied the film, but many cinemas also had orchestras. Good luck with your research. K http://willgooseweb.accessgenealogy.com
Hi Adrienne I suppose you have seen all the postcards on the net? I found dozens on www.google.com but I expect you already know about them. I didn't manage to find anything other than that. Did you know about the Theatre Museum in Beckenham Place Park, Beckenham, Kent.? They might be able to help if you send an S.A.E. I believe there was an entertainer either late 19th century or early 20th century by the name of Gladys Cooper who performed in London. There is a family story that she was related to the Coopers in my family most of whom originated from the Kincardine/Angus area. If any kind soul out there knows anything about Gladys I would be very grateful to hear from them so I can prove/disprove this theory. Many thanks in advance. Carrie
Posted on behalf of [email protected] who was so keen to join us, she got the address wrong (:-)) Please use [email protected] to send messages to the list. This list is just what I have been hoping for to help me solve a mystery! My father was Gordon Douglas (1892 -1973) a classically trained (Manchester) pianist and conductor. Like a lot of people I failed to show much interest in his career and /or to ask enough questions when he was alive. Now I am trying to flesh out the various programmes and memorabilia I have. It seems that after a concert and conducting career in the 30's and 40's he took up various musical directorships around the theatres of the UK and was involved with such shows as Lilac Time and Waltzes from Vienna. I am trying to find out what happened to cause the change in direction - hints of a mental breakdown from distant relatives. I know that he accompanied the likes of Allessandro Valente and Paul Mortimer and I have lots of signed photos from grateful stars that he ha accompanied. I have newspaper cuttings that give his early training as at Manchester College of Music under Professors Egon Petri and Wilhelm Backhaus, later under Monsieur Lehmann at the Brussels Conservatoire and as an opera accompanist under Sir Thomas Beecham. Unfortunately none of this information has been supported by enquires at the Royal Northern College - no records for him under this name or under his real name which I have recently discovered to be George Douglas Plested. I would be really thrilled to hear from anyone who may have heard of him or attended a concert or show that he was involved in - up until the 1950's. After that he managed the Grand Theatre in Swansea and later a cinema in Aberdare. Dave Jassie - List Administrator THEATRE-UK [email protected] Greetings from Lincoln, England
