I have information about a James ROGERS comedian and a couple of William's but can't find a connection to mine. Did any of your Rogers mob (male or female) have a son called William around 1857/8??? Let me know if you would like the bits I have. This is my mob: I have a William ROGERS (2) born approx 1858 who told us (on his marriage certificate in Coventry 1886) that his father was William ROGERS (1) - occupation -Theatrical. The son of William ROGERS (2) was William ROGERS (3) born 1900 who told us(on his marriage certificate) that HIS father was a theatrical artist. Family history says there was a connection with Sadlers Wells. It also says the family came from London. Despite all my searching I have been unable to find William (2) on any census so am unable to find his place of birth or confirm his parents. William died in Coventry in 1902. (Hanging out for 1901 census release) Regards Mary Mary Rogers <[email protected]> Bendigo Australia

    3. Dear John, Bernard LEE was a stalwart of /in British movies. He was usually in a supprting role, but he was always a 'good guy',and usually a senior police officer, or a kindly uncle type you could depend on. I do not know if it still exists, but there used to be a British Variety magazine which might help. One thing for sure, all the English newspapers would have carried his death notice, especially papers like the Times and The Guardian which would have had his obituary. I think he worked for J ARTHUR RANK STUDIOS and also ELSTREE STUDIOS . They surely have archives Good luck with your search.Dorothy in Dunedin NZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Lee" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2001 12:20 PM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] Who's Who > Hi listers, > > I was one of the early listers and posted a message inquiring about an actor Bernard LEE, born 1908. > > It was suggested that I look in Who's Who in the theatre, and there was a quite a write up on his performances in Theatre & "M" in a Bond movie. > > I am now searching for his death & any descendants. > > John from Melbourne > > > ==== THEATRE-UK Mailing List ==== > If you are having problems or have any questions or comments about the list, I can be contacted at [email protected] > > ============================== > Ancestry.com Genealogical Databases > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/rwlist2.asp > Search over 2500 databases with one easy query! >

    3. Hi, I am new to the list. My husband's grandmother had a stage career in England and possibly touring to India & Burma. Born 1877 in Hampshire England as Hilda Annie GIBBINS. Seems to have adopted the name Hilda FAIRFAX found on a programme of a performance of One Summers Day, by H.V. Esmond by the London Comedy Company. I presume this performance was in India as the admittance charge was in rupees. Think the time frame would be late 1890s early 1900s. Nothing is known about her acting career. Do not think she was a major star. Any help appreciated Pam

    3. Dear John, Not much I can tell you about Bernard Lee except that he died in 1981. "Halliwell's Who's Who in the Movies" described him as 'British character actor with solid friendly personality, on stage from 1926 In films, often a sergeant or a superintendent.... or "M" in the James Bond Films" '. First film "The River House Mystery"(1935) - last "Moonraker"(1979). They list 35 films and say there were many more. Also referred to is a gap in his actor career whilst he served in the forces during the war. Hope this is of interest. 3. Hi Steve, I can't tell you anything about your ancestor, James Mitchell, except to say that it does not appear that he made any gramophone records or cylinders of banjo solos. However, I can give you the name of the man who probably knows more about Music Hall, Nigger Minstrel Shows, etc: than anyone, and if he doesn't know, then I'm sure he'll know a man who does. Dont expect an early reply, he edits "Music Hall"magazine, produced CDs and holds down a job. Please enclose a SAE when you write. Tony Barker, 68, Hawkes Road, MITCHAM, Surrey CR4 3JG. Quite a lot has been written about Negro artists who performed in Europe, but not as much about whites who blacked up. G[eorge] H[enry] Elliott "The Chocolate Coloured Coon" (1884-1962), started recording in 1904 and made his last in late 1960 not long before he died. Had one of the longest careers on the Musicial Hall/Variety stage of any artist - over seventy years.
