Hello All, LEO FRANKLYN was my great grandfather's brother. I know a little about him but I would really like to get a photograph of him. I have some old family group shots but as I don't know what he looked like I can't be sure whether he is included in them. I was in touch with his son WILLIAM FRANKLYN ( "Sch... you know who " )a few years ago but lost contact. If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful. Also I picked up some old postcards at a boot fair. The subjects are GRACE CHALMERS, GABRIELLE RAY, VIOLET VANBRUGH, MARIE STUDHOLME, GODWYNNE EARLE and ZENA DARE. If anyone is interested I can scan them. Best regards, Barbara Stow.

Does anyone have a Tom MORAN in their family? He is the lyricist on many of the musical compositions written by my greatgreatuncle, Ellis RILEY. In 1927, "Keighley Carnival Song" was published for the Keighley people and the Keighley Carnival Committee was selling the sheet music to raise funds. (According to the sheet music.) On the front cover, it says "Words by Tom Moran" and "Music by Ellis Riley". I saw Tom Moran's name often while searching through Ellis Riley's scrapbooks at the Keighley Library. Ellis kept enormous scrapbooks of articles of people he played with/for. Many of the singers and performers who performed in Keighley, Bradford, Saltaire, and Leeds were accompanied by Professor Riley. He also had studied in Paris and taught in Cardiff and Keighley. Ellis retired to Morecambe in 1940 where he died in 1944. He and his daughter, Maud Riley taught piano in studios in Keighley. Just months before he died at the age of 81, he was playing for performers at the Alahambra in Morecambe. Are there any Moran rellies on the List? These scrapbooks are available through the inner-library loan at the Keighley Library. I was told they are stored in Bradford. I can't wait to return and copy more pages. I will look through the articles I copied last year and list the names of performers that are in the articles. What a jolly list, such bonhomie compared to some of the others (no names, no pack drill!) I am not really theatrical as I have only a couple of theatre people within my own realm of interest but I would be more than happy to have my own theatrical interests added to your site even if only in a small corner. Here is my message I published in the list earlier this year: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subject: Rose Marie at The Palace Theatre 1960's Rose Marie was performed at The Palace Theatre, possibly in 1961. The cast included David WHITFIELD, Maggie FITZGIBBON and Andy COLE. Among the dancers was an Angela SPARSHOTT. Equity do not have any records relating to this dancer. Can anyone else provide further information, i.e. was SPARSHOTT a maiden name, married name or stagename? Any information gratefully received. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Best regards, Peter McNulty [email protected] www.sparshott.org.uk Researching: SPARSHOTT families world-wide WICKHAM in north Kent. Hi Listers, I was listening to UK BBC4 steam radio today 15.00 hours "Making History" A caller was enquiring about a Halls/radio performer caller "Stainless Stephen". I can remember him in the 1930-40s Apparently, on the stage he wore a stainless steel (waistcoat - not sure if I got that bit right) I hastily scribbled these notes as I thought someone on the list might be interested. Arthur CLIFFORD of Sheffield, an ex schoolteacher who had taught English. Punctuation was a specialty of his and he made it part of his act, in that he used to speak the punctuation into his patter. (Not like Victor BORGE? who punctuated his patter with noises). He moved easily from the stage into radio and retired in 1952. In 1954 described himself as a gentleman farmer. Died at a "ripe old age" in 1971 (check this!!) Obit in Daily Mail etc. Still haven't had any response to my queries to the list about: Actor Edward PALMER, born 1839, Burton on Trent, Stafford, . married 4 Aug 1873, Actress Alice FOSTER born 1842, Lathom, Lancs, Census 1881, census place Ashton in Makerfield Children: Josiah FOSTER (of Alice?) b 1868 & Florence PALMER b. 1870 Anomaly - daughter Florence DOB is 3 yrs prior to marriage to Edward Palmer. Hi Dave/everyone - My website contains my family history so far and also a piece about the Royal Muncaster Theatre in Bootle, Liverpool where my Great Grandfather used to perform. His name was Patrick McDonald and he used to sing and play the penny whistle. I would love to hear any more information about the theatre or see any old programmes etc especially if they mention him. I think he was probably there at the beginning of the 1900's. Huge thanks to you Adrienne .. I am now going to email my family in Thornton to send me the Evening Gazette back numbers of the old memories. If they don't send them to me (only kidding 'cos I know they will) I shall get on my supercharged broomstick and come over and let the air down in their wheelbarrow tyres! So there! I love the Blackpool memories. It was a place where there was ALWAYS super entertainment. (Got a few more up my sleeve). All the best to everyone .. Marjorie
Dear Gloria, Thanks, that's great stuff and just what I want. I hope that the short discography will find a place in your archives. I don't feel that gramophone records are given the place they deserve in genealogical/biographical research. Often they are the only clue we have to what the artist did or what they sounded like.
