    3. Hi Janice, (and Dave) Now why didn't I think of that. I have Folio Vwr vers. 3 and spend lots of time wandering down the side roads of Family using "Neighbors". Such a concentration of thesbians must have a significance. It gives me more names to try to associate with an act or theatre in the area. Dave Jassie used Vers 3 and could find no theatre (association) in Newton-L-W (or -I-M) To all our other Listers Do any of the names Janice pulled out ring any bells. How about names of theatres in Warrington, Haydock, Ashton in Makerfield, &/or Risley in the 1880s Thanks to all helping in my quest VinFOSTER nr Newbury, Berks, UK ______________________________________________ ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Saturday, June 09, 2001 8:26 AM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] Re:Newton in Makerfield -- Theatre?? > When you looked in the census, did you do a neighbour search? > I thought it might show a theatre but I didn't have time to do a complete > one for Newton-in-Makerfield. 3. Hi Tom, Up until 2 years ago, I sang with both a barbershop chorus and, over the years, 3 different quartets. It was great fun, and I have had the privilege of singing on the stages of the Derby Assembly Rooms, Blackpool's Winter Gardens (dressed as King Neptune!! - I have the photo to prove it.) and many, many more venues. If you contact me privately with the sort of information you are seeking, I'll do likewise(to save me boring the list with my ramblings) with my reply. 2. Dave Jassie
    3. Hi Vin, I have an 1875 map of the area around Newton (in Makerfield)(-le-Willows) and it is referred to as Newton in Makerfield. The 1881 Census gives the place that name also, but the locals appeared to prefer to be recorded as being born in Newton-le-Willows. The number of residences recorded on the 1881 Newton in Makerfield Census is just over 2070. I have noticed while extracting the 'Entertainers' from the 1881 census that the existence of a theatre was recorded by the enumerator if there was one in his/her area. There is no mention of a theatre in Newton. Perhaps the people you referred to were just lodging there and working in Wigan, Warrington, St. Helens or somewhere else close by where there would have been a theatre. 1. [THEATRE-UK] re:OLD SONGS
    2. Walter & Marjorie Holmes
    3. Hello all I guess there are still many of us who remember the sing song evenings round the piano at home. Family and neighbours used to join in and they were really enjoyable. My mother had a beautiful soprano voice and appeared as Madame Hargreaves mostly around Manchester during and after the first World War. My father had a pleasant baritone voice and I shall never forget the duet he and my mother used to sing .. 'THE SPIDER AND THE FLY' how I do remember my father's nose which used to turn quite pink with the effor of keeping up with my mother. Of old songs here is one I quite loved all those years ago .. never dreaming that I would one day live on a pacific island. "Once on a cannibal isle there dwelt a dark eyed maid She lived all alone in a little wooden hut in the palm trees shade And on that island she reigned as queen One day a stranger appeared on the scene Said he "Don't waste your time out in this awful clime but come with me my pretty southern maid tp my hpme across the sea." But he went very red when she turned up her nose and said I wouldn't leave my little wooden hut for you oo I have one lover and I don't want two oo What might happen there aint no knowing If he comes along so you'd better be a going 'Cos I wouldn't leave my little wooden hut for you. I also loved (among hundreds of others) EDDIE CANTOR'S Josephina please don't leana on the bell When you musha please don't pusha on the bell I heard Mrs O'Leary say to Mrs O'Flynn Somebody keeps ringing but nobody comes in .....and so on.
