I know his real > name was Arthur Henry WARD, my great-grandmother was also a WARD before > marrying into the DULLEY'S. Hello again Jo, As far as I can see her name was Mayne. Teddy Knox's sister was named Rosie, and she married Sax Rohmer, born Arthur Sarsfield Ward. He was an unsuccessful journalist, turned song writer, and sold his songs to George Robey. He lived in Brixton. He later became a writer and wrote the Fu Manchu books, and I gather that they moved to America. I must confess that I am cheating a bit here ! I have a book called The Crazy Gang, written by Maureen Owen, daughter of Dorothy Ward, who is also mentioned. I work for a library and can tell you that this book is still available to loan. My connection to all this is that my cousin (once removed) was Monsewer Eddie Gray. Just reading on a bit more, it seems that Ethel Dulley was the sister of Clarice Mayne, and Clarice was the aunt of Dorothy Ward. As Ethel didn't marry, perhaps Mayne was a stage name after all. Liam Ward, the jockey is also mentioned. Now I must get to bed, as I have had a long day. I'm sure the above will be of interest, and look forward to hearing from you again, perhaps off list ? Kind regards.........Wendi
Hi Wendi, It most certainly is!! My grandfather had said that we also had a connection with the "Crazy gang" and although my elder brother was always convinced it was Teddy Knox that held the key, again I could not find the link and I certainly had been looking at Clarice and Teddy and two separate links. I cannot imagine that my grandfather could have invented this story so I must believe it to be true. My maiden name was DULLEY and that has been the main area of research so far. Was Mayne her real name or stage? The only other angle I have at present that could explain the connection with my family is this. Teddy Knox had a sister whom I believe was also in a theatre act? Could she have married the writer Sax Rhomer? I know his real name was Arthur Henry WARD, my great-grandmother was also a WARD before marrying into the DULLEY'S. Hi there. I'm new to the list and hoping someone in the UK may be able to assist me. I'm looking for any information on a gg aunt, Agnes "Lillian Carew" Collyns. She was born 1867-1871 in UK, we believe. She was a singer and performer in London prior to going to South Africa in 1890 or earlier. She performed at the Royalty and Court Theatres in London, she was a pupil of Lady Monckton, Mrs. St John Wood, Paul Berton and was a stage manager for Sara Bernhardt. She appeared to be a member of the French Comic Opera Company in London. The London "Dramatic Review" made comments on her success at the Pribnce of Wales Theatre and the London "Era" commented how ell she played a part in the play "Dick Drayton's Wife". She then went to Johannesburg and Australia. Any help would be great, particularly about any personal background. Many thanks. Jim Australia
Forwarded on behalf of Jim and Sue Duggan [email protected] I looked on your site but had no luck. It could be this person, Agnes Lillian Carew Collyns was too young in 1881. She would have been born sometime about 1867-1872. She was a singer and was in an opera company as well in London. The dates would be before 1890 as she was married in South Africa then and performed in Johannesburg. Are there any refernces you could possibly check for her or any additional info I can give you? Really appreciate your help. Best Regards, Jim Tasmania
Forwarded on behalf of Stephen and Joanne Redding [email protected] Hello Dave, I saw your message posted to the Berkshire site. My father remembers his father telling him that we had a family connection with the opera singer Claris Main (Not sure of the spelling). Have you heard of her and do you have any references to her? At this stage I have not found what the family link is. Jo Redding

A minstrel group of this name existed in Glasgow in the early 1920s. My father sang with them and I would be glad to know whether anyone has any information on the group's activities. Mary Hamilton
Hello list, Just came upon this list via rootsweb and thought I'd check it out. Glad to know the project exists! I have lots of missing ancestors in the 1881 census so am looking to see where they went! My first guesses were that they all went to the US or NZ, or they moved because of a lack of work (they were ag. labs). Now I wonder if any of them went to London. I am particularly interested in the name Gerrard KING who is on the 1881 census in Greater London Middlesex. He is married, it appears, to Jane KING. I am not sure of his relationship to my Kings, but he is about the right age to have been a son of my ancestor James Gerrard KING, born in Sussex. None of his sons were named Gerrard, but I wonder if Gerrard could have been a "stage name?" Anyway, could someone look at the census and see where is says that Gerrard KING and Jane were born? I would be very happy to have the result. Thank you in advance, Clarissa K.
Charlotte Cooper, AKA "Mademoiselle Sylvia", born in Battersea in 1872, was an underwater performer. It is reported that she could stay under water for long periods of time, all the while, eating, smoking, and swimming under the rungs of a chair while her waist long hair trailed behind. She worked with "The Professor" (was this Professor Beckwith?) starting about 12-years-old. She is supposed to have been taken by Barnum to Europe and was in the Freak Show along with Krao Farini, the "Ape woman" with whom she became great friends. I have a picture of Mademoiselle Sylvia along side of another girl, both dressed in tights. Charlotte married Joseph Johnson and came to Canada in 1907 to settle finally in Hamilton Ontario. Would anyone have further information like programmes, show bills, news adverts?

Dear Clarissa, A quick look for Gerrard and Jane confirms that they were both living in London in1881, both 'comedians' and they had a domestic servant to look to their needs! Gerrard is shown as aged 45 and Jane as only 28. They both give their place of birth as STEPNEY! Steve

Hi Listers I'm not delving into the past, past, only 40 years. When I was studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama I had a very good friend with whom I have lost touch. She was a soprano called Mary BASSANO (AKA Mary Bass) and I would so love to get in touch with her again. We shared the same singing teacher, Joyce Newton, who taught me so well that I won the Gold Medal for Singers. One year later Jaqueline du Pre won it for Musicians at the age of 14! If any one has heard about Mary please let me know. Are there any other 1953/58 ex students out there? Best wishes Josephine Allen-Kemper

Hello Janettet, and list members, I've heard talk of "Dr. BODY" he was in direct compition with another Electrical Act - Professor SPARKES & Thelma "Washing the Electric baby" I knew Professor SPARKES (aka George RATHBONE) and Thelma his wife. Their act would be in the time scale. I know that they appeared in every Music Hall in the Country. They retired in the late 1950's having sold the rights to the electric Baby to "Stromboli" (Danny LYNCH) who is still alive and living the Gtr. Manchester area.
