    1. RE: [THEATRE-UK] Fw: Clarice MAYNE.
    2. Stephen and Joanne Redding
    3. Hello Bill and all, I guessed that she would have made some recordings but I did not that for sure. I have a f friend that is a collector of old 78rpm records and he attends lots of exchange events, I have asked him to look out for a Clarice Mayne recording for me, as I would dearly love to hear her voice. As to the connection with Ernie Mayne although I have heard of him I do not know if it is but a coincidence. My maiden name was DULLEY and I have led to believe that it was probably Clarice's as well as she had a sister called Ethel Dulley that had never married. However, I am sure some very knowledgeable person on this list will soon put us straight on the facts Bill! Incidentally, I know Clarice was born in London but does anyone know exactly where? Best wishes, Jo Redding. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Dean Myatt [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 15 June 2001 23:16 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [THEATRE-UK] Fw: Clarice MAYNE. 3. I wonder if anyone can help, please? I understand that my late grandfather was "a theatre manager in Crewe" - according to fading family memories. It would be sometime after WWI and before 1932 when he died. Is there a route you would recommend to determine what theatres were active in the Crewe area and where one might find info on managers? Many thanks for reading this, Nigel - former programme-maker(TV) in the fairly recent days when entertainment was the sole raison d’être, not revenue-generation for shareholders - or is it me? - in Fenstanton, Cambridgeshire (or Huntingdonshire to all thinking persons esp. genealogists) The birthplace of John Howland, one of the first Pilgrims on the "Mayflower" ___________________________________________________ http://www.fenstanton-village.co.uk - best viewed at 800 x 600 or greater - optimised for IE4 and above ___________________________________________________ --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hello Jo, So pleased that you were able to request the book I mentioned about the Crazy Gang. I won't tell you any more now, otherwise it will spoil your enjoyment. The picture of Clarice Mayne on her wedding day is in this book. My cousin Eddie Gray's brother John is still alive, and is now 91. They were a theatrical family, and brothers Danny, Billy and Charlie ( better known as Eddie Le Roy) were well known in their day. There were also sisters Vickie, Grace (Ambrose) and Lina (Hardcastle), so if those names ring any bells with anybody, I should be pleased to hear from them. Eddie married Patti Loftus, and I am still trying to find out a bit more about her. Also, look at the old films shown in the small hours on Channel 4. A few years ago they showed one which featured the Crazy Gang, which I taped. So you could get lucky ! All the best........Wendi

I have a contralto voice and one of my daughter's have the same deep husky voice. 3. Hello all, To think I only joined this list yesterday and have already been given some wonderful new information on my connection with Clarice Maine. I also think there could be a connection with the Ward side of my family - Sarah Ward being my great-grandmother's maiden name. My grandfather, Harold also had the middle name of Ward so I guess this must have been important. He boxed at Blackfriar's as a young man under the name of Harold Ward too. Sarah married my great grandfather Richard and he was a Master grocer in Brixton. They lived at 16, Merredene Street in case anyone know where that is. I would dearly loved to learn more about Clarice and also would be interested to see if I can link in the Ward's as well, so if anyone has further information it would be gratefully received. I telephoned my local library about the book that Wendi mentioned and they are going to order a copy for me, I can't wait! Jo Redding

Hi Jo,I have condensed it a bit,but this is what the author W.Macqueen Pope has to say in Chapter 20,"some wonderful women".Clarice Mayne.he describes her as "the perfect principal boy"in pantomime,"her carriage and deportment were amazing"and she had an" attractive husky voice, combined with perfect diction, which made her a great singer of songs". On the halls she was a double act,the other half being her husband, the late James.W,TATE,who she always referred to as"That".He composed the songs and accompanied her on the piano. The songs that these two consummate artists gave to Music Hall hold their place still.TATE died in 1922 a victim of overwork,he was a partner with Julian Wylie in pantomime productions.Clarice MAYNE is married again, and happily,to that splendid comedian Teddie KNOX. excerpted from "The MELODIES LINGER ON"August 1950. Hope this is of interest Jo,regards,Carole.
