Hi Listers, A short while ago I asked if anyone had any information about the above artiste singing a song composed by James Edmond WALKER at the Royal Queen's Theatre in Manchester, but unfortunately received no response. I still have no news about Marie LONGMORE, though I have a photocopy of the sheet music. The Royal Queen's Theatre (otherwise known as the First Queen's Theatre) opened in Spring Gardens, Manchester, in 1831, and closed and was demolished in 1869. When they demolished it, they discovered the spring 15 feet below the stage! Nice story I thought. I'm still awaiting news of some playbills from both Birmingham & Manchester Libraries, but in the meantime I have a few more requests for information if anyone can help. James Edmond Walker's musical output appears to be confined to the years 1863 to 1869, songs and piano pieces. During that time he collaborated with several lyricists. Do any of these names ring a bell? James Alexander WALKER (a brother perhaps?), Charles SWAIN William Henry WEBB George L. SCOTT William BROUGH S.W. ELRINGTON R. GOODDY Artistes mentioned on the covers of other songs are: Ada TRAVERS (she sang at the Prince's Theatre in Manchester) Miss Marie ADAMS (1843 - 1905) Lydia VERNON Miss WHITHAM Mr COOPER Do these ring a bell anywhere? Just for the record, neither Marie LONGMORE nor James Edmond WALKER appear in Grove's Dictionary of Music. Regards, Mo (The LONGMORE Pages at www.msheppard.com)

Hi, I posted this information in the list's infancy and am reposting hoping to find someone with some information to contribute. The Richard Preece family owned and operated the Winchester Palace Music Hall in Southwark from about 1845 until 1878. I woukd like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of this--the performers, atendees, an old playbill's location etc. I got some information from the Theatre Museum in London in October, and would like to add to that. Carol A. Preece
From: "David Blain BT" <samblain@btopenworld.com> (not a subscriber) Sent in error to: <THEATRE-UK-D-request@rootsweb.com> Please use THEATRE-UK-L@rootsweb.com to post messages to the list. William George Ross was half of this "Music Hall" duo. He was also my wife's grandfather and any information you have would be very welcome. He was born around 1880 and we believe had died well before the Second world war. In 1901 he was described as a musician but later as a stage artiste. Thank you in anticipation of your help. David Blain.
I posted this to the list earlier this year. Didn't get any responses then, so am sending it again in case it may help anyone new to the list. Below is a list of actors who performed alongside my grandfather in touring repertory, mainly 1928-1930. The names are taken from press cuttings he kept. If you would like further info. on any of these people, please contact me off-list and I will send details of dates, theatres etc. My grandfather was William Fraser-Brunner, (aka William Fraser) and he was acting from around 1890 to the 1950s (on and off - he was a cinema manager for a while.) I can send some earlier names, but only if anyone thinks it might be useful - it takes a while to extract them! At present these are the names I have:- Alleyne, Muriel Ashby, Robert Baxter, Jane Beaumont, Colette Belasco, Ruby Hamilton Birch, Derek Bradfield, E. Louis Corbett, Marjorie Daunt, William Davis, Muriel Dench, Sidney Deslie, Muriel Ernest, Robert Germaine, Yvonne Hubbard, Percy John, Evan Latimer, Leslie Lorraine, Keith Midgeley, William Ravenscroft, Stanley Rundle, Barbara Rundle, Dorothea Seligman, Beresford Sinclair, Jack Stafford, Altona Stanley Ravenscroft Trevor, Mabel Vernon, Cyril Vivian, Violet Wellesley, Arthur Wheeler, Ewart Widdicombe, Clara Woodfield, Frank Wren, Harry Best wishes Pam in Leicestershire

Hello again Whirligigers! You registered to be informed of updates to the WHIRLIGIG 1950's BRITISH TV AND RADIO NOSTALGIA site. November 2002 Newsletter. Sadly, this month we heard of the death of Lonnie Donegan at the age of 71. Best known for novelty songs like My Old Man's a Dustman, Lonnie enjoyed a worldwide reputation among musicians as exalted as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Van Morrison. During the early 1950s skiffle, with its guitar-driven rhythm, tea-chest basses and washboard percussion, was hugely popular and Lonnie Donegan was its biggest star, notching-up 28 top-30 hits. Donegan's enthusiastic espousal of skiffle, blues, gospel and American folk music was instrumental in igniting the 1960s British blues revival. As the skiffle craze waned at the end of the 1950s, Lonnie Donegan recorded new material, fun songs like Does Your Chewing Gum Lose its Flavour? and My Old Man's a Dustman. His Telegraph Obituary can be found here: http://www.dailytelegraph.com/news/main.jhtml? &xml=/news/2002/11/05/db0501.xml Also James Coburn has died aged 74. He never quite ranked in the top flight of Hollywood stars, yet his powerful performances in several classic films, such as The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid rightfully ensured his status as a minor screen legend. Following appearances in the TV Western series Bonanza, Gunsmoke and Wanted: Dead or Alive, Coburn's first film role was in Budd Boetticher's Western Ride Lonesome (1959) as a villain. Other supporting parts in Westerns followed, until in 1960 he was picked for The Magnificent Seven. More information can be found in his obituary here: http://www.dailytelegraph.com/news/main.jhtml? &xml=/news/2002/11/20/db2001.xml Once again we present a new selection of video clips from the archive as promised: "The Adventures of William Tell" starring Conrad Phillips - http://www.whirligig- tv.co.uk/tv/children/other/adventure.htm#William Tell "Take Your Pick" quiz show clip with Michael Miles - http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/adults/quiz/quiz.htm#Take Your Pick "Juke Box Jury" with David Jacobs - http://www.whirligig- tv.co.uk/tv/adults/quiz/quiz.htm#Juke Box Jury "On Safari" with Armand and Michaela Denis - http://www.whirligig- tv.co.uk/tv/adults/other/onsafari.htm Next month's planned clips will be from those adventure series that we all remember so well: Ivanhoe, The Buccaneers, Sir Francis Drake and Sword of Freedom, so keep a watch out for next month's Whirligig newsletter which will be out around Christmas time. Still more clips are in the wings waiting to be released over the next few months too. Two new "Snippets" were added to the website, donated by members of the Message Board (http://go.ezboard.com/bwhirligig). The first by Jim Wall, who composed a wonderful ode evocative of the '50s which he calls "Fing's aint what they used to be!" and the second donated by Robin which wonders how we survived back then before lawyers and government regulated our lives, all for our own good! You will find them both at: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/memories/snippets/index.htm The only new item on the radio site is an update to the Mrs. Dales Diary page including, at the bottom of the webpage, new information about some of the cast supplied by Mr. Roger Sansom. http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/mrsdalesdiary.htm A new shorter web address can now be used to access the site, which is: http://www.whirligig.tv =================================================================== As usual, if you think of anything that is missing or incorrect, have any more information about the programmes featured or just want to share your memories, do drop me a line to terry@whirligig-tv.co.uk Alternatively place them on the Message Board which I monitor daily at: http://pub34.ezboard.com/bwhirligigtv Cheers for now. Hi all, I'm new to the list and wasn't even sure if Rootsweb were still hosting it judging from the message archives. Whilst compiling a "LONGMOREs and the arts" page for my website, I came upon the following piece of sheet music: Guard me, O thou gentle spirit / written & composed by James Edmond Walker (Musical score 5 pages - song for voice and piano) Published by L'Enfant, London, 1865 Price 3/- 'Sung nightly by Miss Marie Longmore at the Royal Queen's Theatre, Manchester' Has anyone any information about Marie LONGMORE, the theatre, or even the composer or publisher please? Regards, Mo (The LONGMORE Pages at www.msheppard.com)
Seeking information and/or the best places to search for a Madam ROLLS/ROWLES (born as Madge Watson) who was a pianist in the UK (probably the London area) around late 19th early 20th century. We know she had two sons named Vero and Rollo and lived in Surrey at some time. This is all we know of her - she was the sister of my great-grandfather, George Watson. Thank you, Brian Walker Researching: England: WALKER, HEARD, WATSON, PAGE
Dear Phil and list, I have read that those who performed in Shakespearean Comedy were referred to as 'comedians' as those in Tragedy as 'tragedians'. I don't think that it is anything to do with performing in London or the provinces. Ann
