Dear Neal, That is a typical old sepia and I thank you so much. A lot of people wouldn't share the way you have......I am sure you are going to get a rather swelled scone from all, the praise and thank yous, ...........but well deserved.....a genealogists treasure hon, is the photos and anyone that is like you and sharing the way you have deserves the praise. Buttering you up....hell yes BUT YOU DESERVE the THANKS... Grateful doesn't even begin to describe it, especially researching from Australia, which is very hard at the best of times. And I have put this on the theatre list as a thank you too, because it is just so nice.....and because Dave Jassie deserves to hear the nice things that come from his list....... And thanks too for Wendi, who I just received an email from too.Wendi most genies are giving and sharing people and this has been exciting beyond belief, Thanks to all Sorry I havent responded sooner, we have had a bereavement. I think it was from the original thread on Clarice Mayne that I discovered the list: I was searching for her name on Google and came across the list archives. Truth be told, I know very little about Clarice Mayne. About six months ago, I came across an old signed photo of a woman dressed as Dick Whittington. "Oh that's Clarice Mayne" said my Mum. "She was an old pal of your father's." (This is a phrase I get to hear a lot ... ) So consequently I have, scanned into my computer, a photo of Clarice Mayne that you are quite welcome to a copy of. It's in JPG format, and is 227 KB big, so I won't send it via email without you telling me it's OK first, since it's reasonably big. If you want me to make the image smaller, then that's fine (though it's a nice clear image as it is). I'll ask my mum if she knows any more about Clarice Mayne. I don't think she will have known her personally -- my Mum was a lot younger than my Dad, so consequently anything she knows about my Dad pre 40s that isn't already written down somewhere is through stories he has told her, however, she did recognise her straight away, so maybe she knows something. Hi All, A few weeks back I posted a request for information about a singer called Marie LONGMORE at the Royal Queen's Theatre (the first Queen's Theatre) in Manchester in 1865. Shortly afterwards, Manchester Library discovered a couple of playbills in their archives where the lady was performing as an actress. However, I have been unable to discover her birth as a Marie LONGMORE so it is possible that LONGMORE is either a stage name or else she married someone of that name. If the latter case, then she probably married a second time as I don't have a death for a Marie LONGMORE either. Yesterday I discovered the will of William LONGMORE, a watchmaker of 25 Mosley Street, Manchester, who died on 10th July 1873. The executor of the will was his son, Thomas LONGMORE, whose occupation was given as "actor". Could this Thomas LONGMORE possibly be the wife or a relation of my missing Marie LONGMORE? If anyone has a Thomas LONGMORE in their reference books, could they please get in touch? Many thanks. Regards, Mo (The LONGMORE Pages at www.msheppard.com)
Hi folks, I just thought I'd pop in to welcome our new subscribers and to thank you all for keeping this list probably the friendliest one at Rootsweb. We currently have 111 subscribers which has been around the average number since I took over the list in May 2001. Prior to this date the list was unused and there were no subscribers, so between us all we have achieved quite a lot. In the early days the list was quite busy, so if you haven't already looked, the list archives might be a good place to check for that snippet of information you may have missed. Dear Listers, I've just discovered (by accident, of course, ) the following site "Shakespeare and the players" http://shakespeare.cc.emory.edu/index.cfm with some great images of many actors and actresses. In the words of the owner: >Shakespeare and the Players is a survey through postcards of the many now >unfamiliar English and American actors who played Shakespeare's characters >for late Victorian and Edwardian audiences. It's just lovely to look at and you may even find someone you were looking for! Best wishes Janice Toowoomba
Hello I have recently discovered that my G.G. Grandfather JOHN LATIMER who owned the Latimer's Mammoth Theatre around the 1840-1860 wrote a play called 'Maria Marten' or 'Murder in the Red Barn', I found reference to this at the National Library of Scotland when I typed in Latimer's Mammoth Theatre, but could not find anymore about John Latimer, it said Main author John Latimer Dramatist, I can find loads of information about the play itself and Maria Marten, but nothing else about John Latimer, can anyone help me. I am desperately trying to find out where John Latimer originated from, his father was a Samuel Latimer, I have tried to find the Latimer family on the 1851 census, but cannot find them anywhere, obviously with them travelling around, as that would give me his place of birth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rita kindal01@telkomsa.net

Hi listers Today I received a birth certificate for my Aunt. It said that her father, my grandfather, ROBERT JOHN GEORGE SMITH, was a 'Porter at Costumiers', when she was born in 1913. He was at the time, 32 years old, born 1881, and was living at 168 Clapham Road, Stockwell. In the 1891 census his family were living at 22 Cumberland Market, Pancras. Now the crunch - how would I find out which Costumiers he would have been working at? I presume it would have been somewhere in the theatre district of the Westend, easily accessible from Pancras and Stockwell. I am also trying to trace his wife's, my grandmother's, birth. She was ALICE MAUDE BREWER and was said to have been born 24 Sept 1896 London I have not found her birth registration or her whereabouts in the 1901 census. I am wondering if she was from a theatrical background - with the grandfather's connection to theatreland, maybe they met through her parents coming to get costumes. Any ideas would be very welcome.

Hello List! I have been trying for several years to find information on and descendants of a JAMES ALBERT TAYLOR who was a Theatrical Stage Manager in the 1920s and 30s. I believe he was at Camden Town Theatre at some stage. I have had no luck so far. Then it suddenly occured to me.....maybe someone has information on the mother of his illegitimate child born in 1927. He was married to someone else and had other children. The mother's name was GLADYS LOUISE ARCHER and was supposedly a singer or dancer before the birth of the child. Can anyone help please? The child is now in her 70s and would dearly love to find her half-brothers and -sisters and also the burial place of her father. Time is running out! Jacki Western Australia jackis@tik.com.au
Thanks Bob will do. Gwen

Hi there, I've just subscribed to the Theatre-UK list, so I thought I'd better send a message to introduce myself and explain why I'm interested in it.
