    3. Today's episode: In which some of the people from the 1851 census are fit into the Tetley tree. A whiff of scandal is revealed in Armley, and with a plea for help to find a lost soul or two R tetley wrote: > Hi Folks > For a change jut a few names from the Leeds census of 1851 > John George Rowe head widower 30 years Brewer born Sussex > Ann Rowe mother married 60 years born Gosport > Ellen Tetley Visitor single 36 years born Leeds > of 16 Salem Place H O 107/2319 ED 1h FN 174 Salem Place is where Joshua T. had his brewery. Ellen (1814-1898) was one of Joshua's daughters, and remained a spinster all her life. Was her visit to the widower brewer as innocent as it might seem? They are of similar age, after all. Despite the brewer's mother's presence as a chaperone; was all entirely above board? I would imagine that tongues might have wagged, in Leeds, in 1851! > Thomas Tetley head M. 30 years Whitesmith born Bradford > Hannah Tetley wife 34 years born Leeds > Mary Tetley daughter single 8 years scholar born Leeds > William Tetley son single 6 years scholar born Leeds > Edwin Tetley son single 16 years Whitesmith born Leeds > of 15 Barstow St H O 107/2319 ED 1a FN 10 This is my lot! Thomas was my ggg-grandfather; William, my gg-grandfather Thomas fell out with his father, William Tetley, (who ran an iron founder's business in Leeds), and moved to Sheffield, sometime between 1851 and 1861. Was the marriage between Thomas and Hannah the cause of the rift? Edwin can't have been Thomas' son, or he'd have been 14 when he was born! More scandal? My grandfather, Frederick T. (1900-1982) who became technical director of a Sheffield steel firm, was fond of saying "from riches to rags and back to riches in four generations". There was an assumption that Thomas turned his back on his father's wealth, and lived in relative poverty in Sheffield, where he worked in the steelworks, instead of working in his father's business. This is the last sighting of Edwin Tetley.... unless of course...... > John Tetlow head single 43 years Painter Block born Leeds > of 26 Joy's Fold H O 107/2319 ED 3q FN 618 I can't add anything here. > Elizabeth Spinks head widow 56 years Pauper formerly Stone Masons wife born Headingley > John Tetley Lodger single 18 years Cloth Dresser born Leeds > of 7 Princess Yard H O 107/2320 ED 1e FN 117 Another unknown. .... unless of course......
