The head, Frederick W Tetley, was my g-grandfather. The one-year-old, also called Frederick William Tetley, was my grandfather, who worked his way up to be the technical director of a Sheffield Steel firm. As I understand it, in those days, you could join the lectures at the Sheffield University in the evenings, on payment of a small fee. The fee was something in the order of tuppence. Through attending these evening lectures, and self study, he became the works chemist and eventually chief metallurgist, then later, technical director. A relatively shy man, he taught himself public speaking, and became an authority on the design of permanent magnets. He was involved in the development of ceramic magnets, which are now found in loudspeakers and all sorts of applications for magnets, all over the world. He was a determined man, our Fred! Alice lived into her nineties. Thomas and Frank emigrated to New Zealand, a few years after this census was taken. John Arthur T became an insurance agent and lived in Sheffield all his life. Fred & Polly moved to Stocksbridge, about 1916, where Fred worked at Sammy Foxes (the local steel works). Note that the father of all this lot, and Lucy's husband, William Tetley (1844-1921), is missing. He was living with 'The Widow Wells' who he subsequently married.
