    3. Hi Folks, I have just invited John to join the list. John asked if I could fill in some of the gaps in his family history, and this is what I came up with. Some of you are distantly related, I reckon! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the 1901 census there is a Frederick Tetley, analytical chemist, with wife Henrietta, and children; Beatrice (6), John (6), George (2), and Arthur (11m). I assume that Dorothy (John's grandmother) was born after the census in 1901 or even later. Their son, George Ernest Tetley was killed in WW1, near Arras. As I understand it, he has no known grave. The details from the Commonwealth war grave Commission website are as follows:- Lance Corporal George Ernest Tetley of the 2nd/6th Bn., South Staffordshire Regiment, died aged 19 on Thursday, 21st March 1918. Lance Corporal Tetley, was the son of Frederick and Henrietta Maud Tetley, of 1, Broad Lane Huddersfield. Frederick Tetley was born in 1868 in Bradford. Assuming I have the correct father, (and we really need his birth certificate to prove that) it was his father, who was the ancestor of yours, who was called John. John was born in 1832 in Stanningley, Yorkshire and baptised 22 Jul 1832 at Calverley. He married Sarah Elizabeth (?) in about 1855, and had 7 (known) children. (Samuel, Caroline, Martha, Ann, George, Frederick, John). Samuel, Caroline and John appear to have died before reaching their teens. John was indeed in the wool trade. He was a mohair merchant in 1901, aged 68. I believe that John was a son of Luke Tetley (1806-1882) and Martha (nee Wilkinson). Luke appears to have married twice. Martha died in 1842, and he seems to have married Elisa in 1844. In all, Luke had 11 children, but not all of them survived to adulthood. I think that Luke was a son of John Tetley (1772-?) and Susannah Porritt. John & Susannah had a further 7 children. John's parents were probably James Tetley & Sarah King. James' parents were possibly Joseph Tetley & Hannah Lee It is possible that James was a son of George and Anne, but this is somewhat speculative. If it is true, then George was probably born around 1680. I reckon that you have distant relatives who are subscribed to the Tetley newslist. I'll let them introduce themselves!
