Hi folks, I've been making enquiries about Tetley Hall, which is/was near Crowle in the Isle of Axholme. This following would appear to exclude any connection with the Tetley Surname. This is from The Isle of Axholme Place Names and River Names by John K. Johnson 1881-82. TETLEY - a hamlet of Crowle. The name first appears as Teste-la Haie then as Tete-la-Haie, finally as tetley. This word means head of the park; haie(F), a hedge, the thing enclosed by a hedge, that is, a Park. This was a game park. Ah well, another blind alley! Still doesn't explain why there was a John de Tetteley in the area in the 1300s... Hmmm. Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK.
