Hi folks, I have been sent a newspaper cutting from 1953. It relates to Thomas Walsh Tetley (1874-1953), and his retirement as Medical Officer of Health for the Kirbymoorside rural district, There is a description of his life's work, and a blurred photograph. Thomas was a native of Ilkley, a son of George Edward Tetley (1850-1903) and his wife, Kate Snow Walsh (1848-1925). It seems that Thomas spent many of his years in the Kirbymoorside area. He moved there in 1903, and was still there in 1953. Actually he died later that year, and was buried at Undercliffe in Bradford. He was involved in the introduction of piped water to the area, and introduced district nursing. He was the first owner of a motor car in the district. As a country doctor, with no ambulance service at the time, he found it necessary to perform operations in outlying farms, by candelight, and also introduced 4,000 babies into the world! For those familiar with the books of James Herriot; the area that Thomas Walsh Tetley lived and worked in, was much the same area as that worked by Herriot's creator, Alf Wight. I imagine they must have bumped into each other, because their homes and businesses can't have been more than 17 or 18 miles apart. Both will have been among the early motorists of the area. I can't send the attachment via the list, but will be pleased to send it to anyone who drops me an email. Cheers Richard (the one in Notts) -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK.
