Thanks for the Heaton Baptist church information, Richard. This opens up a few new avenues of research. I reckon that the Sally Tetley who married Johnathan Bevens, was possibly the daughter of James Tetley & Mary (nee Milner), who was born in 1806. Jonathan BURRAN and Johnathan BEVENS are possibly one and the same. So, Ailes, Nathan and Benjamin could be all siblings. This looks as though it could be Jonathan in the 1881 census. Hi folks Another request for info that landed in my inbox this week:- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I wondered if you had any information on the above named (G S Tetley) who was the president of CHURWELL cricket club from 1902-1938. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I suspect that Churwell is an area of Leeds. If anyone can help, please let me know, (or post back to the list). Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Hi folks, This just landed in my inbox:- Re: George Greenwood Tetley, 1805 - 1873 Dear Mr. Tetley, I came across your "Tetley" family web site by chance during the course of my research into the history of an obscure 19th century lead mine in Ireland, of which George Greenwood Tetley, a Bradford merchant, was the Chairman and single largest shareholder (3,000 shares out of a total of 19,856 issued). The company, The Tassan Lead Mining Company Ltd, which operated what was probably the largest 19th century lead mine in County Monaghan, Ireland, was established in April 1857 by G.G.Tetley and several other Bradford based merchants and traders. The company was put into voluntary liquidation in September 1858, its assets sold by public auction in November that year, and formal dissolution completed in April 1860. Amazingly, share certificates of the Company still exist, and I have several in my possession, some of which bear the signature of G.G.Tetley. Your web site has provided me with invaluable new information about G.G.Tetley, and his descendants as far as three grandchildren: Harold Rennie Tetley, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1901; and Peter and Jane Lang (no dates of birth cited). Unfortunately your links do not extend any further, but I am contacting you on the off-chance that you might be able to help me pursue this branch of the "Tetley" family further. My reason is simple: I would like to contact any of G.G.Tetley's lineal descendants in the hope that they might still retain information about the man, photographs, perhaps even family papers relating to the Tassan Mine in family archives. Are you aware of any further descendants, and, if so, do you know how I might contact them? I would be extremely grateful for any help that you might be able to provide. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This comes from the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland Ltd (http://www.mhti.ie). Can anyone help with this? I'll supply the email address to you, if you can help and wish to respond. Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. He, however, resigned the position, and went out to South Africa as a farrier in the Army. His trade was that of a farrier, and his abilities soon gained for him promotion to sergeant. The letter reads as follows:- Farrier-Sergt R J ROBINSON 112, Middlesex Imp. Yeomen, Field Force, South Africa Aug 12th, 1901 Dear Mr TETLOW,- It was only last night that I was thinking of the pleasant times I often had when I was in Stalybridge, so I thought I would just drop you these few lines to let you know that I am still alive. I have not been so unlucky as to stop a bullet yet, but my poor horse has. He got shot from under me. I could have cried over him, he was so good and faithful. I shall never have another like him. You know I was always fond of a nice horse, and he was one of them. We had it pretty stiff with the Boers on June 24th, 25th, and 26th. We had a lot of men wounded and a good many horses killed. The enemy took five men prisoners, and after taking everything off them, they let them go. It is very hard getting at them on the kopjes round about Restenburgh and Reitfontein, where DELAREY and his forces are. They will want some shifting from there. It is hard trekking on biscuits and bully beef; but I hope it will soon be all over, as I have had it hard enough. I have had the work to do all by myself, as the three shoeing-smiths have left me - two are in hospital, and the other has been court-martialled; so I have my hands full, having all the horses to shoe, and all the sick horses to attend to. But I do not care so long as I keep drawing sergeant-major's pay. I will have the crown up before long, and hope to be home before Christmas, all being well. If I get leave I will come through to see you all.- With best respects to all from yours affectionately, Farrier-Sergeant R J ROBINSON. Hi folks, Just a note to welcome the newer subscribers to the list, and to tell you that I've just updated the website with the latest 'family tree'. As usual, I've excluded the dates for all 'living' folk. (As far as I know, I think I've got that right.) Please let me know of any mistakes, omissions etc. that you notice. The website can be found at http://freespace.virgin.net/richard.tetley/ Then click on "Tetley - name study" One of these days, I'll update the 'front pages'! There is no reference in Victorian or NSW BDMs up to 1888 of the the Tetleys/Titleys listed on the "Saldanha" I can easlily check for any other names in Victoria, NSW, Tasmania or Western Australia. Regards, Eric Tetlow.
I don't know whether you already have this information which I came across whilst searching the net today: Passengers on the Emigrant Ship "Saldanha" Sailed from Liverpool in the summer of 1856 for Victoria, Australia. A large number of the passengers were County Durham miners. See the Journal of the Northumberland and Durham FHS, Vol 21, No 2 (Summer 1996), pp.42-43 for further details. Hi folks, Just a note to welcome everyone to the new TETLEY list that is now established at Rootsweb. I have now manually subscribed, to this list, everyone who was subscribed to the old 'tetleys' list at yahoogroups, and closed down the old list. If you do not want to be a subscriber to this new list, please let me know, and I'll do the necessary admin task to remove you. This list is for everyone to use, as they wish, for any discussion of family history of the Tetleys, Tetlows, Tatleys, Titleys,.... and any other variation that you can think of. In time, we could possibly create lists for these variations and cross link them, but I've confused myself enough with this move, so I guess that can wait a while. <g> Please feel free to post to the list. It's your list! I'm just the (current) administrator! The address to send emails to is TETLEY-L@rootsweb.com If you'd like to give us all a run-down of your own individual family history, or any aspect of it, please go right ahead. If you just like to read the postings that appear from time to time, that's OK too. Cheers Richard (The one in Nottinghamshire!) email :- richard.tetley@ntlworld.com
Hi folks, This was sent to me by a friend:- Leeds Intelligencer 1829 25th June 1829 p 3 Manslaughter Yesterday morning, George Harper an Irishman in the employ of Zebulon Stirk, machine maker of this town (York St. in 1822) came to his death in consequence of receiving a blow from Mark Tetley, a fellow workman.... An inquest was held on the body yesterday evening at the York Tavern when a verdict of manslaughter was returned. Harper had a wife and three children, and was considered an inoffensive man; Tetley, who is a young man, also has a wife and child. He bears a good character and is in the greatest agony at the fatal event. 13th August 1829 p 4 Manslaughter at Leeds - York Assizes Fri. Aug 7th Mark Tetley was charged by the Coroner's Inquest with Manslaughter having caused the death of George Harper of Leeds on the 24th June last. Mr. Blackburne (with whom was Mr. Marshall) stated the case. According to this statement, the prisoner and the deceased, who had both been in the employ of Mr. Zebulon Stirk, of Leeds steam-engine manufacturer, had a quarrel on the 24th June last, during which the prisoner struck the deceased on the head with a shovel, which caused concussion of the brain, in consequence of which he died almost immediately. The Jury found a Verdict of Not Guilty. I've had another look at the dates, and I reckon that this must be the Mark Tetley who was born about 1808, and was the son of my own gggg-grandfather William. Mark married Maria Wilson Stell in 1827 and had a child William in 1828, which all fits with the evidence above. He died in 1856 and was buried in Leeds.
