    3. Hi folks, Righto, thanks to Eric, I now have the Roman numerals sussed! I was transforming X as 10 and L as 50, and wondering why the L followed the X. But XL is 40 and LX is 60, which I guess I should have known because IV is 4 and VI is six. Anyway, to cut a long story short.... it works out like this:- Grave 44 Headstone Sacred to the memory of Andrew TETLOW of Skirden, Yeoman who died Oct 11 MDCCCXVIII (1818) aged LXXVIII (78) years Also Dinah his wife who died April 11 (should this be II e.g. 2) MDCCCXLI (1841) aged LXXXVI (86) years Also of Adam their son who died March XIV (14) MDCCCXLI (1841) aged XXVIII (28) years Also Robert TETLOW son of the above Andrew and Dinah died May XIV (14) MDCCCLXV (1865) Also Joseph TETLOW son of Andrew & Dinah died May IV (4) MDCCCLXX (1870) aged LXXII (72) years. Also Betty their daughter died February VII (7) MDCCCLXXIV (1874) aged LXXXI (81)years Also Mary TETLOW died April IX (9) MDCCCLXXVIII (1878) aged LIII (53) years. There is a discrepancy over the date that Joseph died, but Eric confrms that it was 1870 (as in the roman numeral version above) as opposed to the memorial in the church. Now then, this accounts for the ones mentioned above, and I can sort out Ann, the wife of Christopher Sanderson, who was another daughter of Andrew & Dinah. I'm still not sure where Ann, William, and their children; Robert, William, & Margaret, fit in. Nor can I relate William Standing-Tetlow, and his wife & son, to the rest of them. 3. Hi folks, I've just had a go at working out the decimal equivalent of the dates in my last posting that were in roman numerals, and it's fairly obvious that somethings awry (unless I can't translate Roman numerals properly. And I admit that I'm better with bits, bytes and hexadecimal numbers than Roman ones!). I reckon that I can work out which family this is, but it's more in the Tetlow camp than the Tetley one, even if they were ambivalent about the spelling of their name at times. 3. Hi folks, I recently resurrected this from my notes. You may have seen some or all of it before, but this is probably the first time that I've posted it in this form. Cheers Rich Examples of early mentions of Tetlows, Tetleys etc are as follows. · Adam de Tottelawe (of Salford, Lancashire), paid part of the knights fees to Edward I, when the King’s eldest daughter married. (Cheshire Court Rolls) · John Tylly was mentioned in 'Kirkby’s inquest' in 1272 as being a landholder in Gomersal. · Hugh de Tetlowe was recorded as having been murdered in 1316 (Vol 1, New Series of the Chetham society.) · Sir Thomas de Titteleye, of Lincolnshire, is mentioned in ‘Knights of Edward I.’, published by the Harleian Society. · Sir William de Titteleye, featured in trespass cases in Wales in the 1290s (‘Knights of Edward I.’, published by the Harleian Society.) · Richard Tetlow was granted Chamber Hall in 1320 (Lancs & Cheshire Antiquarian Socy 1890) · Jordan de Tetlowe was around in the 1300s, in Lancashire. He married into the Prestwich and de Trafford families. He, or a namesake, cut off the thumb of Robert del Bothe in Manchester in 1322, and was described as "a common evildoer". In 1333 he, (or a namesake) was accused along with Richard Tetlow and 40 others, with the murder of Sir William Bradshaw. (Vol 1, new Series, Chetham Society records). Several offspring of Jordan, are known to have existed. · Richard de Tettelowe was acknowledged as the rightful owner of land in Mancestre and Wythington in 1384 ('The Wapentake of Salford, prerequisites'.) · John de Tetteley was around in the Isle of Axholme in the 1300s (George Redmonds:-‘Yorkshire surnames’) · Robert de Tetlawe was associated with the Duchy Of Lancaster in the 1400s (Feudal Aids, Public Record Office, vol 6 p 606) · Reignolde Tetlawe was aged 60 in 1536 (Pleadings and Depositions in the Duchy Court of Lancaster) · John Tytlott, drapour, died in Hull in 1484. · Jennett Tetlawe and Seth Tetlawe were baptised in 1547 at Warley, near Halifax. · The Tetlows of Chamber Hall, and others in the Oldham and Manchester areas are fairly well documented for the 1500s and 1600s. · Tetlows occur in parish records around Ashbourne and Wirksworth in Derbyshire in the 1500s. · Several Tetlow/Tetley/Tetlay/Tetlawe children were baptised in Birstall from 1564 onwards. The spelling of the name seems to have been variable! · Peter Titley was Rector of Ufford, Northants in 1575. · William Tetlay of Holbeck, Leeds, buried his daughter Elizabeth in 1597. · Richard & Peter Titley (sons of Peter Rector of Ufford) recorded as being vicars of Bourne and Grantham in Lincolnshire in the early 1600s. · John Tetlawe, who was a vicar at Garton in Holderness, died in 1614. (YAS records vol 73) The resulting spread of Tetlows, Tetleys, Titleys etc. seems to be such that in the early 19th century, the Tetlows are concentrated in Lancashire, (with one offshoot in London and another in Derbyshire); The Titleys are mostly in the midlands e.g. Salop (Shropshire); and the Tetleys are mostly in the West Riding of Yorkshire, but with a couple of concentrations in Nottingham and Ashby de la Zouch. By the end of the 20th century members of the Tetley, Tetlow, Titley etc., families can be found around the world, notably in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, theUSA, and of course England. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Hi folks, I've been making enquiries about Tetley Hall, which is/was near Crowle in the Isle of Axholme. This following would appear to exclude any connection with the Tetley Surname. This is from The Isle of Axholme Place Names and River Names by John K. Johnson 1881-82. TETLEY - a hamlet of Crowle. The name first appears as Teste-la Haie then as Tete-la-Haie, finally as tetley. This word means head of the park; haie(F), a hedge, the thing enclosed by a hedge, that is, a Park. This was a game park. Ah well, another blind alley! Still doesn't explain why there was a John de Tetteley in the area in the 1300s... Hmmm. Hi, Picking up the next of GLT's notes, I read:- 362 Cutler Heights Lane Mark Tetley, mar, 72, shopkeeper, Bierley YKS Hannah Tetley, mar, 64, , Spen YKS Now then, I have come across this before. This could be Mark Tetley and Hannah Wormald, who married in Halifax in 1812. Unfortunately, there's some confusion with another Mark, who was also born about 1778 and seems to have married in 1804, 1813, and 1820. All three wives died shortly after marrying him. Part of the problem is that both Marks lived in the same area, and were both buried at Tong. (probably!) Another case of so much information, and yet not quite enough! 3. Hi folks, More transcriptions of George's notes:- 1851 census:- John Rayston, head, Mar, 42 engineer, Wike, YKS Maria Rayston, wife, Mar, 40, ,Bradford, YKS. Ellen Tetley,niece,unmar,13,scholar,Bowling YKS [RFT. This is information that I haven't seen before. It looks as though this is Ellen, the daughter of Mark Tetley (1805-?) and Hannah Crowther (1805-1843). This possibly means that Maria Rayston is Mark's sister. Now, there is only one Maria with the right sort of birthdate, and that is Maria Tetley, daughter of William Tetley & Hannah Marsden, who was baptised 3 Oct 1811 (which is about spot-on). Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of a marriage for Maria. But if all this hangs together, then this Mark, is the Mark who was the son of William & Hannah Marsden (who was baptised 7 Jun 1808). The age is a bit out, but stranger things have happened. This would give me a problem with the Mark Tetley who married Maria Wilson Stell in Leeds in 1827. I had assumed that he was the son of William Tetley & Hannah Marsden. Oh the tangled webs!... What we need now, is a marriage for Ellen, and some mention of her father, and hopefully a couple of witnesses for good measure.] The particularly interesting part, for me, is that Maria and Mark may be my ggg-Aunt & ggg-Uncle. 3. Thanks for the BT entries Richard, The first one needs to be treated with a bit of caution, because William used both the names TETLOW and TETLEY, seemingly interchangeably, (unless there really was both a William Tetley and a William Tetlow who lived at Stone Chair! The information on Luke, his wife Eliza and their son Matthew is all new to me. The information on Peter & Nancy is new. Since she died after the date of the 1881 census, she ought to appear in that census. I haven't found her yet! Maybe she remarried? The information on John & Emma is also new. Emma is another one who should be in the 1881 census, but hasn't turned up yet! The daughter Lilly is of Luke's son, also called Luke. The date I have is 1885, which came from the Bradford Observer. This fits her age better than 1888, because she was aged 2 in the 1881 census. All the entries for Luke & hannah's children and their own deaths is new information. Benjamin's baptism is new information. So! Not much in the way of repeats there Richard! Can't say the same for the BBC though. <g> Cheers Richard (Nottingham) Richard Tetley wrote: > > Hi folks > Just one or two BT's I came across in Bradford Library. > I hope their not like the BBC TV all repeats > Sarah wife of William TETLOW of Stone Chair who died on the 7th September 1879 aged 64 years also the above named William TETLOW who died 16th August 1881 aged 69 years page 31 number 152 > > In loving memory of Ann the wife of Charles TETLEY of Bradford and daughter of Moses BOTTOMLEY of Wade House Shelf who died 5th December 1864 aged 48 years also Annie their daughter who died July 23rd 1881 aged 44 years > > Matthew TETLEY youngest son of Luke & Eliza TETLEY of Stanningley who died the 25th January 1875 aged 26 years also Eliza wife of Luke TETLEY who died May 3rd 1880 aged 65 years also of the above Luke TETLEY who died February 7th 1882 aged 75 years number 158 > > In memory of Peter TETLEY who died August 30th 1846 aged 32 years also of Nancy wife of the above who died November 12th 1881 aged 68 years (family grave) number 159 > > In memory of John TETLEY junior of Stanningley who departed this life December 7th 1836 aged 251/2 years also of Emma wife of the above who departed this life December 17th 1889 in her 78th year number 160 > > Martha the wife of Luke TETLEY of Stanningley who died April 28th 1842 aged 35 years also of Squire TETLEY who died ay 14th 1843 aged 7 years also of Squire TETLEY who died December 12th 1845 aged 1 year 6 months also of Caroline TETLEY who died March 8th 1858 aged 18 years number 161 > > In loving memory of Lily the beloved daughter of Luke & Hannah TETLEY who died April 23rd 1888 aged 7 years number 187 > > XXXX son of Luke & Hannah TETLEY died 9th January 1888 age 1 year > > Fred son of Luke & Hannah TETLEY died 30th September 1892 aged 24 years > > Hannah wife of Luke TETLEY died 4th April 1915 aged 71 years > > Luke TETLEY died 2nd December 1916 aged 71 years > > Benjamin son of John & Hannah TETLEY of Great Horton (Weaver) baptized on 15th June 1828 number 492 > > Cheers > > Richard (Yorkshire) -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK.
