More from the probate registers:- 1901 ----- Tetley Amelia of Alexandra Crescent, Ilkley, Yorkshire, widow, died 23 Jul 1901, probate London, 9 Oct to Henry Read Butler, spinner & manufacturer, effects £1860-9-6. [Amelia Butler (1811-1901) married Benjamin Tetley on 9 Jul 1835 at Bingley. He was an auctioneer and grocer. I'm not aware of any children.] Tetley George of 55 Cambridge Terrace, Hyde Park, Middlesex, died 18 Sep 1901, probate 25 oct to Richard Tetley, gentleman, effects £326-7-0. [I've drawn a blank here. Any suggestions, gratefully received!] Tetley James Carter of the Guinea vaults, Wakefield, licensed victualler, died 12 Dec 1900, probate Wakefield 10 Jan to Mary Eliza Tetley, widow, & William Hemsworth Linley, brewer, effects £110-0-0. [James Carter Tetley was born in Ireland, the son of William Tetley and Caroline (nee Carter). He was unmarried, aged 43, in 1881.] Tetley Joseph of Rooms Lane, Morley died 23 Apr 1901, probate Wakefield, 22 Jun to Mephibosheth Hirst, corn merchant, John Thomas Butterfield, spinner, effects £384-9-6. [I can't place this chap. Any suggestions?] Tetley Mary Hodgson of Bank House, Wellingboro, Northants, widow, died 7 Oct 1901, probate London 13 Dec to Mary Emily Townsend (wife of Thomas Henry Townsend) & Alice Susan Harrison (wife of Thomas Harrison) effects £42,383-8-4. [Mary Hodgson Smith was the wife of George Greenwood Tetley. They married in 1840. Mary & Alice were the two, known, surviving daughters. Another surviving child, George Rennie Tetley, was featured in the 'Extraordinary Ancestors' TV programme, recently.] Tetley Robert of the Robin Hood hotel, Church Bank, Bradford, publican, died 15 Sep 1901, probate Wakefield, 25 Oct to Samuel Tetley, innkeeper, effects £336-11-8. [Robert is relatively unknown, to me, apart from being mentioned as the father of Samuel, when Samuel married Martha Emily Totty in 1894 and as the father of Thomas Henry T, Samuel's brother, when he married Ellen Derick/Dewick also in 1894. Apart from that these folk appeared out of the blue!] 1902 Tetley William of Widney House Solihull, Warwickshire, & Floodgate Street, Birmingham, screw manufacturer, died 10 May 1902 at Widney House, probate Birmingham 8 Aug to Elizabeth Lucy Tetley, widow, & Henry Hunt, screw manufacturer, effects £24,341-7-11. [William (1848-1902) was born in Birmingham. His mother was named Ann, his father's name is not known by me. He had a sister Sarah, but no more known family, or children] Regards Richard (in Nottingham)
Hi Folks, The following were extracted from the probate records at Nottingham Archive. I've transcribed them, just about as they appear in the records, but if you spot any errors, or there are any queries, please let me know. I've added some notes, where I can add anything to the stated information. 1900 ----- Tetley Elizabeth of St Catherines Home, St Marys Rd, Bradford, spinster, died 16 Jul 1900, probate Wakefield 8 Oct to John Hall, warehouseman & Thomas Sagar, insurance agent, effects £82-19-8. [ I suspect that this is Elizabeth (Betty) Tetley (1834-1900) a daughter of Joshua Tetley & Martha (nee Atkinson) of Heaton.] Tetley Henry, of Bridge Hewick, Ripon, died 11 Mar 1900, probate Wakefield 7 Jun to William Ernest Tetley, solicitor, & John Russell Willans, woollen manufacturer, effects £7139-10-9 [ I reckon that this is Henry Tetley (1832-1900), farmer, and husband of Ann Caroline (nee Rob). William Ernest T would be his eldest son. Henry was the youngest son of William Tetley and Mary Ann (nee Dresser). He was a brother to the Joseph Dresser Tetley, of New Zealand scandal fame. The Willans connection is possibly through Henry's sister Elizabeth who married an O. Willans. You may recall that Henry was found drowned in the river Ure, about 300 yards from his house.] Tetley John of 17 Church St, Morley, died 16 Dec 1899 probate London 27 Mar to Frances Mary Tetley, spinster, William Marshall Tetley, power loom tuner, & Albert Edward Tetley, furriers assistant, effect £1026-11-5. [Most certainly, John Tetley (1820-1899), a tailor, and son of Samuel Tetley & Mary (nee Marshall). Frances, William & Albert are three of his children] Tetley John Edward, of Woodville Priory, Honor Oak Rise, Camberwell, Surrey, and of 21 Mincing Lane, London, died 26 Apr 1900 at Woodville Priory, probate London 9th Jun to Alice Mary Spicer Tetley, widow, & George Feaner Peat Dean, publisher, effects £5021-8-6. [John Edward Tetley (1843-1900), a tea merchant, was a son of Edward Tetley (1815-?) one of the founders of the Tetley Tea empire. John & Alice had 2 daughters. Maybe one of those married George Dean.] Tetley Joseph of Broadwater House, Framlingham, Suffolk, esquire, died 27 Dec 1899, probate London 30 mar to Joseph Tetley, tea merchant, & Thomas George Bishop, merchant, effects £36936-2-5. [Coincidentally, this is the other brother who founded the Tea empire, and uncle to John Edward Tetley, above. The Joseph T, to whom probate was granted, is likely to be his son. I don't know who Thomas Bishop was.] Tetley Sarah Elizabeth, 91 Osmaston Rd, Derby, spinster, died 8 Jan 1900, administration (with will) Derby 27 feb to Thomas Tetley, gentleman, effects £975-0-6. [I think this was Sarah Elizabeth Tetley (1857-1900), the daughter of the Thomas Tetley to whom probate was granted. Thomas was another tea dealer, but as far as I know, not associated with the brothers Joseph & Edward.] Regards Richard (in Nottingham)
Hi folks, An Article appeared recently on the thisisbradford website, which tells the tale of a Mrs Tetley who was a benefactress to a local school.. http://www.thisisbradford.co.uk/bradford__district/bradford/news/jim69.html regards Richard -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Hi Folks, A friend sent this information to me recently:- James Tetley Briggs b. May 9, 1852 England, d. Sept. 10, 1922 in Vancouver. Father: Luke Briggs b. England Mother: Susan Breakley b. England He was in the province of B.C. for 10 yrs., in Canada for 10 yrs. James was a retired carpenter. Residence was 5665 McKinnon St., South Vancouver B.C. Informant was his wife, Mrs. H. Briggs. The only remotely likely possibility, in my data, is a Lydia Tetley (from Nottingham) who married a John Briggs in 1856. The only way that I can see this fitting in, is if John Tetley Briggs was an illegitimate son of Lydia's, who took the surname Briggs when his mother married. None of that fits in with the parents listed, though. So that possibility is probably fanciful, unless Luke & Susan are inventions! If anyone has any knowledge of this chap, or suggestions as to the reason for his middle name being TETLEY, I'd be most interested. Cheers Rich (in Nottingham)
Hi folks, There was a typing error (or was that brain fade?) in my last posting. Benjamin Tetley (butcher) of Bingley died in 1951, (not 1959). Regards Richard (in Notts)

Hi, I reckon that this is possibly Susey Wroe, who married Samuel Tetley on 5th Aug 1810 at Birstal. That would make her about 45 when she died. I'm only aware of one daughter, Eleanor, born in 1811. Hi folks, In Lincolnshire, there is a small hamlet called Tetley, which is near a place called Crowle. It's too small to be on anything but the most detailed of maps, but there it is, still, and has been for centuries. So far, I have no record of any Tetleys living there, except for a single reference to a John de Tetteley who was living in the 'Isle of Axholme' in 1320 (mentioned by George Redmonds in his book Yorkshire surnames (ref: YF)). (The 'Isle of Axholme' is another name for the general area, in which, Crowle, and the hamlet called Tetley, are situated.) at this URL, are some of the lay Subsidies for the area for around 13201-1330, and there are some folk called 'de Teclay' mentioned. http://www.le.ac.uk/elh/pot/lindsey/crowle.html. If we note some of the other odd spellings of names shown there, e.g. Waryn for (possibly) Warren, then maybe its possible that 'de Teclay' is a form of writing down 'de Tettley'. I've certainly heard my name 'Tetley' spoken as 'Teckley', in Sheffield, when I was younger. So, listed there, are:- Robert de Teclay who contributed 2 shillings and 8 pence John de Teclay who contributed 2 shillings John de Teclay who contributed 1 shilling Maybe these are some of the early Tetleys! If so, it blows my theory that the Tetleys are just Tetlows who migrated across the pennines! I note in another part of this website, the mention of a book that might have some bearing on this. It says:- "An extremely interesting study of the lay subsidy material for the Parts of Lindsey is: G. Kristensson, Studies on the Early Fourteenth Century Population of Lindsey (Royal Society of Letters, Scripta Minora, Lund, 1976-7), which considers the direction of movement of people and regional association." Hi folks, I suspect that this was Richard Tetley (1803-1889), the son of Betty Tetley of Birstal. He married Mary Huddlestone in 1832. The addresses of the partners, from something like a Kelly's directory of that time, might be useful. I'll see what I can find, next time I'm in a library. Thanks, Bill, for these census entries. Annice is a bit of a mystery. I have an Ann Tetley, in the database, born in Cheadle, but she was slightly different in age at the 1881 census. I'll keep an open mind on her! Edith is another mystery. I don't have any record of her appearing in the 1881 census! Amelia is the right age to be the same one who appeared in the 1881 census with her parents David and Mary Tittley. The slight problems are a discrepancy in the birthplace (Pontesbury in 1881 and Bromstead in 1901) and that she was described as being handicapped in 1881 (deaf).
