    3. Hi Barry, Mostly, it rains in Manchester, and we're having our July share of rain, in a matter of hours at the moment. It's started on August's share as well, I think. Manchester is, of course, hosting the Commonwealth games, which would only be on-topic if there was a Tetley/Tetlow connection! <grin> There's a Theresa Tetteh (from Ghana) competing in the Badminton, but apart from that, no Tetleys or Tetlows that I can find. Unless, of course, there's someone who's related to a Tetley/Tetlow/Titley etc.... Keep digging and we'll get there! At the moment the Aussies are winning. The English are second, with the Canadians right behind. Let me see, where are the New Zealand lot....... . . . Are yes, here they are....! Just above Scotland and below Wales! A geographical impossibility! And the Ghanaians... They're at the bottom of the medal table, jointly with St Lucia, where an Alan Tetley was born in 1890. (or was that St Kitts?) <grin> Cheers Rich (handing over the baton....) Barry Tetley wrote: > My wife asked the other day, is something happening at Manchester? It > seems to be in the news a lot!

And so say all of us! ;--)))) Barry Tetley (Auckland New Zealand with a ggrandfather from Heaton) My wife asked the other day, is something happening at Manchester? It seems to be in the news a lot! I did wonder if anyone else had noticed anything happening there. Or is everyone engrossed in libraries, museums, and graveyards? (My wife is also of the backward persuasion, currently proof-reading her book on the Reconstructed Chronology of the Divided Kingdom, soon to be published by Eisenbrauns.) Or is this an inappropriate diversion from the business of the group. I remember the controversy a few years back when the Yorkshire genealogy group got bogged down over whether Yorkshire puddings and other culinary fare were an appropriate topics of discussion. This is just my contribution to family digging, for the moment. Barry :-)

    3. Hi Richard, I can't really help, but just an off-the-wall guess might be.... Bartholomew Tetley of Bradford (Wool Comber) married Sarah Clough of Bradford spinster on 21st November 1774 page 60 No 2880 If they didn't name a son Bartholomew, I'd be surprised! If they did have a son and call him Bartholomew, he might have been born 1775-6 ish, and be about 21 in 1796 (give or take a few months). Maybe it would be worth looking at the names they gave to their sons. There are rules that are followed in some families. I can't recall how it goes exactly, but the first is named after the father's father and so on. Having said that, it does look as though he was heading for calling his sons, Mathew, Mark, Luke & John. The Heaton family are fairly well known, (and seem decent enough folk!) so it would be nice to be linked to them! One (more serious) thought, have you tried chasing up Bartholomew's military records? It's just possible that something has survived, relating to his miltary service. From memory he was in the Durham militia, so maybe a Durham military researcher could help. It might be worth joining one of the north-eastern newslists and asking on there. cheers Rich R tetley wrote: > Hi Folks > Help required! have any of you Tetley's traced your roots to Darlington UK I've just spent today visiting the library to recheck on Bartholomew TETLEY who married Jane RAIN 26/10/1796 they had four children Ann TETLEY born 24/2/1799 / John TETLEY born 18/3/1801 / Matthew TETLEY born 8/10/1803 / Mark TETLEY born 19/10/1806 > Mark is my gggdad > I checked the birth marriage and death records from 1796 to 1830 all I found was the births of the above. > The interesting thing is that on the birth records Bartholomew is listed as a native of Bradford / Halifax / and Heaton all I can say is he must have had a Bike!! > Cheers > > Richard (Yorkshire) > > ==== TETLEY Mailing List ==== > Need to see the archived postings? 3. Hi Erik, Thanks for your email. As far as I know, the Tetleys either descend from the Tetlowes/Tettelowes who were in Cheshire, England in the 1200s, the Titteleyes of Shropshire in a similar timeframe , or the Tetteleys of Axholme, England, who were mentioned in the early 1300s. I'm not aware of a Tetlie connection, but that is quite possible, I suppose. The variations in spelling were numerous in the early part of the millenium. Perhaps the 'Axholme' Tetleys were originally Tetlies. There is, in fact a small settlement called Tetley in Lincolnshire. I haven't traced any connection with the family, but I haven't really had the time to research that yet. Is there any evidence from the Norwegian side, I wonder? I've copied this to the Tetleys news list, which you'd be most welcome to join, if you wish. Just let me know, and I'll make the arrangements Regards Richard > Subject: > The surname Tetley > Date: > Wed, 19 Jun 2002 11:20:01 +0100 > From: > Erik > To: > richard.tetley@virgin.net > > > > > Dear Mr Tetley, > > I'm Erik Tetlie from Norway, now studying at the University of Bristol, and I > was wondering if you have any information about the origin of the Tetley > surname. 3. Hi Mark, The Musgroves and Musgraves may be, in fact probably are, the same folk. Sorry I was too slow to spot the likely spelling variation. The spelling of Musgrove is the dominant one in most of our records, so I'm not sure where or when the Musgrave crept in. However, these things do 'appen. Names do change over time! The information I have is that in the Kildwick parish registers:- Edith Hannah TETLEY 20 years spinster of Kildwick father Samuel TETLEY (Manufacturer) married William MUSGROVE 23 years bachelor (Merchant) of Otley father Peter William MUSGROVE (Merchant) on 14th October 1884 page 200 number 400 So, going back to her father & mother Samuel TETLEY full age bachelor (Book Keeper) of Sutton father Jonas TETLEY (Warehouseman) married Hannah BARRETT full age spinster of Eastburn father Peter BARRETT on 22nd August 1860 page 102 number 203 Their children were:- Peter William Tetley, John Smith Tetley, Edith Hannah Tetley. Hannah (nee Barrett) died in 1866, and Samuel married again. His second wife was Ellen Jane (?) and there were six kids:- Samuel Herbert T, Henry T, Bulie T, Jane Preston T, Fred T, & Dora T. Samuel was a son of Jonas Tetley & Mary (nee Smith). They had 8 children Jonas was a son of John & Ann Tetley (11 children) John was a son of Jonas Tetley & Hannah Crabtree. I'll send you a report on that part of the family tree. I've just looked up the 1881 census, and this is..... you guessed MUSGRAVE! 3. Hi folks, On a lighter note...... (makes a change from Memorial inscriptions!) Oliver Tetley's son (by his fourth wife, Pamela Bowes-Lyon), Alexander Tetley, apparently got married in 1995 to Sophie Connolly, and now has three daughters, Alice, Emily and Louisa, all born between 1996 and 2000. Pamela was a niece of the Queen Mother, who was a Bowes-Lyon before she married King George VI, (or the Duke of York as he was). So, presumably they're very (very) distantly in line for the throne of England! Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Anthony was the eldest son of Charles Harold Tetley and Evelyn Gertrude (nee Vandaleur). I would guess that the influenza epidemic was responsible, (but that's just guesswork, of course) His younger brother, Ivor was killed in WW2. There was also a sister, Pamela. 3. Hi Mark, I really need some dates (birth, marriage, death, baptism etc,) to help me get started. The easiest, for me, is to know who was alive, and what age they would be, in 1881, then I can track them on the 1881 census (hopefully). It does help to know roughly where they were living in 1881, as well. Any clues?
