Hi folks, I've just extracted all the index entries from the 1901 census, for as many variations of Tetley/Tetlow that I can think of. It is in the form of an excel spreadsheet which is about 18.5 Mbytes, but zips up into an 858k zip file. There are about 2870 folk in the file. If you'd like me to send you a copy, just drop me an email. Note that these are not the full entries (which you have to pay the government 50p each for, of course), but do give the following info:- Surname, first forename only, age, where born, county and parish in which they are living, occupation, page id, person id, piece number and probable folio number. There are no relationships to other folk, but they are grouped in 'probable' dwellings. At least, it allows you to identify a likely census entry that is worth paying for, with some reasonable certainty that they are the right family. These are the entries that I've extracted (or at least searched for):- Tetley, Tettley, Fetley, Jetley, Jettley, Tettey, Telley, Tetterley, Teterley, Tetly. Tethaly, Tetlaw, Tetler, Tetlock, Tetty, Tetlay, Tetlow, Tatley, Tatlaw. I chickened out of the Titleys, Tatlocks, and Letleys for the moment. If anyone would like a smaller file (or files) with a subset of these names, or even down to particular families, just let me know, and I'll do my best to get them to you. If anyone knows of a variation that I've omitted to include above; again, please let me know. Cheers Rich (the one in Nottingham) -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Some comments on Richard's recent posting:- > Birkenshaw Records > Edgar son of Harry and Annie TETLEY of Birkenshaw (Publican) born 6 April 1891 baptized 5 July 1891 page 172 number 27 Harry was the landlord of the 'Golden Fleece' in Birkenshaw. His father, Joseph, was also an Inn keeper. > Beatrice Mary daughter of Harry and Annie TETLEY of Birkenshaw (Publican) born 13 December 1892 baptized 22 January 1893 page 176 Beatrice died in infancy. She was buried on 1st April 1894. Her father, Harry, had died less than two weeks before, in Mar 1894. > Emily TETLEY 19 years spinster of Birkenshaw father Joseph TETLEY (Inn Keeper) married Joe COCKCROFT 21 years bachelor (Book Keeper) of Birkenshaw father John COCKCROFT on 19 April 1876 page 30 number 59 By the 1881 census, these two had two girls, Maggie Cockcroft Tetley, and Edith Cockroft, and John was an 'aerated water manufacturer'. It would seem that Maggie's birth on the 3rd March, preceded the marriage by some seven weeks. > > William TETLEY 23 years bachelor (Farmer) father Joseph TETLEY (Inn Keeper) married Alice EDMUNDS 22 years spinster of Birkenshaw father James EDMUNDS (Painter) on 18 June 1877 page 34 number 67 William & Allice's son, Edmund, only lived to the age of five. I don't know of any further children. > Emily TETLEY 23 years spinster of Birkenshaw married Samuel SOWDEN 22 years bachelor (Fitter) of Birkenshaw father William SOWDEN (Pattern Maker) on 22 October 1921 page 204 number 408 First knowledge of Emily, I can't identify her parents at the moment. Hi folks, Firstly, many thanks to Richard (the one in Yorkshire) for his postings from the 1901 census (and all the other great extraction work that he does for us.) Secondly, I've just managed to find my own family on the 1901 census (which is now on-line at http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/index.jsp). In case you don't already know, this is the Public Record Office version, for which you have to pay 75pence (UK money) for each sheet. You can examine the indexes for free though! Unfortunately, errors are many, and my family have been transcribed as having the surname JETTLEY, and my g-grandmother, Polly, has become Rolly. (By the way, there are some 76 Jetleys on the 1901 census. I'll put money, on most of them being Tetleys!) The bad news, on my part, is that gg-grandfather, William Tetley (1844-) isn't living with gg-grandmother Lucy (nee Jackson). Lucy is living with her son, my g-grandfather Frederick William Tetley, his wife, Polly (or Rolly as she appears in 1901) their son (my grandfather), and Lucy's other sons & daughters. William, the rogue, is a 'boarder' with 'The Widow Wells' as she is known in the family, (and has been since presumably about 1900!). I am fairly sure that after Lucy's death, William made Betsy A. Wells an honest woman again. She certainly appears in a Kelly's directory as Mrs. Betsy Tetley, in the 1920s. Hmmmm! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BTW Can I suggest that we pool any census entries that we extract? It would certainly save me some money in extracting the entries for the Tetley one-name-study that I'm attempting. Should you wish to spend some time on the census website, I can recommend a tool (excel spreadsheet) for collating the entries, and discovering the likely family groups. If you go to the website of the Leedsindexers, there is a free download of the spreadsheet http://www.leedsindexers.co.uk/Internet_Tools.htm It takes seconds to download (at least on my cable modem connection), and is a really useful tool in making sense of the free data that you can access on the PRO website I'll try to catch up with t'other Richard's postings over the weekend, and I hope to extract some of the 1901 census index entries, which might help us identify the various folk of direct interest to folk on this list. It won't be as detailed as the entries that Richard has posted, but should be enough to identify which sheets actually contain relatives and need paying for (I'm assuming that you only have access to the Yorkshire entries Richard?) Hi Richard, According to the FREEBMD website, Mark's birth was registered in September 1862 at Leeds. He was actually registered as "Mark Tetley Langton". Hi folks, Thanks for these Richard. The first two fit information that we already have. The last one would fit better if the name was TETLOW instead of TETLEY. Hi folks, Just by way of a change, some information about the list!. There are currently 34 subscribers to the list. May I take this opportunity to welcome, to the list, the newer subscribers! This is of course, your list. Please feel free to use it to discuss Tetley family history. Our hosts only require that we stick loosely to the topic, although its probably wise not to stray too far away, or other list members may object! The address to email to is :- TETLEY-L@rootsweb.com While we've been hosted by Rootsweb, we've posted 142 messages in nearly two years. There are three folk with the name 'Richard Tetley' subscribed to the list. (Over the centuries, there have been at least 46 children named Richard Tetley.) The earliest record of a Richard Tetley, is of one being born in 1658:- "Bolton by Bolland PR: Richard, the son of Mr Thomas Tetley of Skirden was borne the iiird day of Februarie 1658 page 161" Unfortunately, his father was more usually named as Tetlow, and Richard subsequently used Tetlow as a name, although the family seem to have been ambivalent about the spelling of their name, over the years! At least ten folk, who subscribe to the list, live outside the UK, (mostly in Australia or Canada, or New Zealand, with at least one in South Africa). I'm hoping to persuade an 85 year-old to join us, but she's gadding about on holiday, at the moment! In my view, the two most complete Tetley family trees, are those of the descendants of Joshua Tetley, who founded the brewery, and the descendants of William Tetley of Heaton. But if t'other Richard wasn't stuck with his Bartholomew in 1778, he'd be well on the way, being only one generation adrift! Myself, I'm stuck in 1763 with George Tetley, who was born in Birstall, the son of another George, (but which George!)! I'd be grateful for some statistics from the Tetlows, because I have to admit to limited knowledge, on that score! Most useless information:- 9 subscribers use AOL as a service provider. I'm off to France to visit the Somme battlefields, (and augment my wine cellar contents) next week, so if anyone would like a photo of a particular place, or memorial, for their family records, please let me know, in the next day or so, and I'll do my best to visit the right place for you.
