This is a (corrected) copy of a mailing to our superb expert webmaster Richard of Nottingham .... The William Tetley who first settled his family in Paeroa was my G Grandfather. I believe we have knowledge of the two nephews who came to recover their health (since NZ was and is said to be a much healthier climate than England). But it can't be that good, since they died. The idea that their father (the other Willliam Tetley, husband of Sarah) came to NZ seems to conflicts with other facts. The information in the Tetleys of Paeroa New Zealand published five years ago says that Samuel Herbert died in Auckland and was buried at Rotorua NZ after four months in NZ, and Charles Henry died at Paeroa NZ sixteen days after his arrival to stay with his Uncle William. The Book also reports their father (also William as Richard rightly says) died in 1895 at Heaton. In fact he seems to have taken over the Chellow Grange farm when OUR William departed for NZ. It is certain that TB was dreaded by the NZ Tetley family. My Grandfather (the firstborn of the William who first settled in Paeroa), Alfred, died at 49 reportedly of complications with TB when my father was only 7. That put the family into poverty throughout their growing years. My father grew up with a dread of TB. I remember him vehemently insisting that I "get the jab" to protect me when I was young. In later years, during our missionary service in the Philippines, our eldest son Bruce contracted primary complex TB. My father (Langley William) was devastated, unable to comprehend how God would allow us who were doing God's work to suffer such a blow. In fact, after two years daily medication, Bruce was cleared, and to date has suffered no ill effects. But it illustrates the hatred of TB that continued in the family from those early times. And one wonders whether my Grandfather - whom of course I never met, but who I think I knew quite well from the remnants of his writings and a few years of his diary jottings up to his death - for he too was a servant of God), might have contracted TB from the visits of his English cousins. ??? The ages of Dan and Arthur are a bit difficult to resolve with the fact that Cornelius was unmarried in 1881! Maybe they were adopted sons of Rachel's from a previous marriage? A bit of detective work (on the freebmd website) reveals that Rachel was Rachel ELLIS before she married Cornelius. The marriage took place in the second quarter of 1885. And a quick look on the 1881 census shows this entry:- Dwelling: Tong Street Census Place: Tong, York, England Source: FHL Film 1342059 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4431 Folio 84 Page 28 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Sarah ELLIS W 66 F Hipperholme, York, England Rel: Head John ELLIS U 37 M Hipperholme, York, England Rel: Son Occ: Cotton Twister James ELLIS U 34 M Brighouse, York, England Rel: Son Occ: Coal Miner (No...) I suspect that they were sons of Rachel's, despite the fact that she wasn't married in 1881. Maybe they were sons of Cornelius, all along, but for some reason he couldn't marry their mother! Serenna would appear to be the child of Cornelius and Rachel, since she was born after (or at least about the same time that) they married. Hi Trevor, The Tetleys have quite a long association with Low Moor, particularly your family, of course. But I have to admit that I haven't visited Low Moor for some time, so my sense of the geography and scenery of the area isn't very good. I know of Low Moor Iron works, and that there was a big explosion there at one time. I would imagine that the ironworks is all closed down now. Is there much of the early 19th century housing still there? I suspect that my own gggg-grandfather, William Tetley (1787-1868) worked at Low Moor at one time. His son Thomas, (my ggg-grandfather) was baptised at Low Moor Wesleyan in 1821. William went on to run an iron foundry in Holbeck in Leeds, so it wouldn't be surprising if he learnt his trade at Low Moor. As far as I know they were never recorded as living at a particular address at Low Moor, but maybe that information just hasn't come to light yet. I know that there are some very early Tetley connections with the Birstal, Birkenshaw area. The Tetleys and Tetlows appear in the Birstal church records, way back in the 1500s. I suspect that the 'Low Moor' Tetleys just wandered over from Birkenshaw at some time. It's only a matter of about three miles from Birkenshaw to Low Moor, I reckon. Its my pet theory that the 'Heaton' Tetleys, and even old Joshua's family, started off at Birstal or Birkenshaw, but we have to develop the proof for that yet! :-) I'd be very interested in finding out where the Tetleys lived at Birstal and Birkenshaw. We know that Harry ran the Golden Fleece in the late 1800s, but I would imagine that the Tetleys farmed on one or more of the farms in the Birstal area, from the 1500s onwards. I know that there has been a lot of redevelopment in the general area, certainly near the motorway, but I believe that Birstal itself, is to some extent unchanged. There must be family connections with some of the surviving buildings, I would imagine! Do you know if anyone has written any books on the history of Birstal or Birkenshaw, that might indicate who lived at the various farms, through the ages? I'll try to get the web pages updated at the weekend. (and spruce the pages up, while I'm there. They're looking a bit dated now!) By the way folks, if there's anyone with a hankering to write web pages, who fancies taking over the Tetley website, I'd be quite happy to rip out my personal stuff, and hand over the reins. I just don't seem to have enough time, at the moment, to maintain them properly. It takes me all my time to keep the Tetley database going! You don't need to have any webspace of your own, its just a case of writing the pages, and then I'll upload them to my ISP. First one to volunteer..... (By the way, it's an honorary position. In other words, the pay is poor. To be brutally honest, there isn't any. :-)) ) Cheers Richard (the one in Notts) TrevorTetley@aol.com wrote: > As a comparative newcomer to computers at the ripe old age of 68,may I make > my first contribution to our site. -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Sarah Tetley, widow of William Tetley, was a Tetley before she married William. Sarah was a daughter of Joshua Tetley & Martha Atkinson, and therefore brother to the William who emigrated to New Zealand and founded one of our New Zealand Tetley families. I'm not sure who Sarah's husband, William's, parents were. If anyone can shed any light, I'd be grateful. Sarah's husband, William, had died in 1896. Samuel Herbert T (1872-1903) was the eldest child and died in May 1903 in Paeroa NZ, from TB. Annie was the next (born about 1873) and died in 1902, so should be on the 1901 census somewhere, maybe in hospital. Martha was, according to the information I have here, also buried in April 1901, which looks as though it may be awry, unless she died very soon after the census was taken!. Charles Henry Tetley also died in 1903 in Paeroa NZ from TB. The mother, Sarah also died in 1903, at Allerton. William Atkinson Tetley also travelled to New Zealand to try to recover his health, I presume, and died there in 1907. So, within the space of six years, all five siblings, and their mother had died (presumably all from TB, although I don't know that for sure). Their other brother, George, died at the age of two weeks in 1877. There were no survivors, as far as I'm aware. A sad tale indeed! Namely Judith Rhodes, Martha Raistrick and Sarah Mortimer. (it was Judith Rhodes who wasn't actually married to him, as far as I know) In the 1881 census it was James, the elder, who was at Plantation Hall. Evelyn, (or Eveline, as she is sometimes recorded) (1882-1967) was a daughter of Thomas Smith Tetley and his wife Jane (Holroyd). Thomas Smith T was a brother of James & Martha, of course. I'm struggling to find Blanche Younghusband and their father, Joseph, on the 1881 census. Of course Gertrude was already married to Henry, by 1881. > Edith TETLEY 26 years spinster of Heaton father Thomas Smith TETLEY (Farmer) married Charles King JENKINSON 22 years bachelor (Draper) of Sheffield father George JENKINSON (Farmer) on 16th April 1900 page 172 number 343 All new to the database....Well, I knew of Edith's birth, and that her father was Thomas Smith T, but the rest is new..... I think that Charles King Jenkinson may be from Giggleswick, and just working in Sheffield, but more information is needed to resolve that. Maybe the 1901 census..... Hi Folks, Re the second entry below, that t'other Richard posted a while back.... I've had another look at this, and have come to the conclusion that I have two families mixed up, in the database. There must have been two Charles William Tetleys, with similar dates. There was indeed a Charles William Tetley, (1853-?) son of Samuel Tetley, and his wife Catherine, whose brother was Henry Greenwood Tetley (who obviously did live at Heaton, because he baptised his daughter Phyllis Mary at Heaton). This Charles was aged 28 and unmarried in the 1881 census. I think that this Charles is the one who married Blanche, and had a son called Charles Reginald T. Furthermore, that Charles Reg T married Marjorie, and had a daughter Barbara, who were all recorded going through Ellis Island (immigration into the USA) 24 Jan 1921. It appears that Marjorie and Barbara were of Canadian nationality. The Charles William T (1855-1910) who appears in my database, with a wife of Emma Snare, and children, Gertrude and Sydney, must be a different Charles William T. altogether. In fact I think they are the same couple as were recorded in the 1881 census as Charles H Tetley and Emma S. Tetley. Certainly the dates and birthplaces fit. Furthermore, Charles W. T. is probably the son of William Tetley (1812-) and his second wife Lydia Hartley. I've amended the database accordingly! I hope I haven't confused anyone who has interests in the 'Greenwood' side of the Tetleys!
