Hi Richard, There was a birth registered in 1895 of a Lawrence Shuttleworth Tetley. That would seem to be a likely fit. I can't find a birth of a Fred Shuttleworth Tetley or George Shuttleworth Tetley, but there is a birth of a George Shuttleworth in 1899, which might fit. From Parish registers, Elizabeth Ellen TETLEY 21years spinster of Bradford father Richard TETLEY deceased married Arthur SHUTTLEWORTH 18years bachelor of Bradford father George SHUTTLEWORTH on 17th February 1896 page 123 No 245 So, I think its likely that Laurence/Lawrence was an illegitimate child of Elizabeth's before she married Arthur. From the ages of the two younger ones, they should indeed be full Shuttleworths. I'll bet that Arthur claimed Laurence as his child. RE: Dorothy Lenora, daughter of James & Annie Tetlow, AKA Tetlaw, AKA Tetley. I believe the year of birth should read 1897 vice 1877. Here is a good example of a Tetlow/Tetlaw/Tetley family using all three variants of the surname. James first wife was called Elizabeth, surname unknown and Annie appears to have been previously married to a Greenwood. This family of Tetlow/Tetlaw/Tetley were originally from Luddenden. Hi Folks, I'm getting some information in, from a chap who is distantly related to the Tetleys, through Bessie Walsh (1828-1882). Bessie Walsh married George Calvert Tetley, son of Edward Theophilus Tetley, who was himself a son of George Tetley and Grace Greenwood. For those who are not familiar with this family, they were among the textile barons of Bradford. The information mostly relates to the family of Bessie Walsh, so I won't post it all here, but if anyone would like a copy, I am at liberty to pass it on to you. It is an interesting tale in some respects, even if there is no direct Tetley information in it, because there are extracts from a travel diary. The family emigrated to the states, and sent back one of the youngsters, with instructions to 'look up' his english relatives (and with instructions on how to find them!). I'll post the interesting bits when I get there. Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Hi folks, I've just been informed of this website http://www.taliesin-arlein.net/names/search.php What you find there, is THIS DATABASE, the content of which was kindly provided by the Office of National Statistics, holds a count of the number of people in England, Wales and the Isle of Mann with a given surname, based on the names of people registered with the NHS. The extract was prepared on 9th September 2002 So I put in some names that came to mind... name count ranking ==== === ===== Tatlah 22 = 85116 Tatley 58 = 46401 Tatli 12 = 127230 Tatlow 522 = 11005 Tattley 9 = 154387 Tetlay 15 = 109436 Tetley 1477 = 4817 Tetley-Jones 5 = 230412 Tetlaw 43 = 55819 Tetlow 1287 = 5392 Tettey 139 = 26873 Titley 2109 = 3525 Titlow 78 = 38693 Tittley 143 = 26388 So, the Titleys have numerical superiority!
