Weeeeell. At baptism he was William E Tetley. In the 1851 census, he was William M Tetley. In the 1861 census he was William N Tetley. I'm fairly sure it is one and the same man, because a William Tetley with a mother called Caroline, and with an elder brother called James Carter Tetley, was just about unique in that time frame. Unless, of course, I'm missing something ...... But it is odd, because Caroline was Caroline Carter, born in Queens County, Ireland, before she married, and the other children have middle names of Carter, Ellis and Russell. If the 'E' stood for Ellis, It would stack up. Unfortunately, we lose track of William E/M/N Tetley after the 1861 census. Several of his siblings died prematurely, so it wouldn't be too surprising if he died in his late teens. I have an open mind on this family, because the 1851 census details are contradictory. I'm always open to suggestions! Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. 2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi Folks, For those with ancestry which goes back to Heaton, you may be quite interested to know about a book that has recently been published, called 'Heaton the best place of all", by John Stanley King. If you can, I recommend that you lay your hands on a copy, for your library. There are photos of Bairstow and Ben Tetley, and one of Alonza Tetley's milk cart in it, and other information that I'll discuss 'on-list' when I get the time. But that shouldn't deter you from buying a copy. Apart from the Tetley information, it's as good a description of a Yorkshire pennine village and its folk, as you'll find anywhere. There are quite a few photographs to give you a feel for the place, even if you've never been there yourselves. John Stanley King has corresponded with me in the past, and has lived in Heaton all his life. He has been a councillor since 1970, and is lord of the manor of Heaton. He was Lord Mayor of Bradford in 2000. The book is ISBN 0-907734-596 priced at 9.95 UKP, and is available from Bradford Library, (I believe) but you may be able to buy it through other sources. 2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi folks, I've just been having some correspondence with a relative of Edwin Tetley (1854-). Edwin married Lydia Ackroyd, and my correspondent is descended from Lydia's sister, Clara. Clara ACKROYD [b1860]- daughter of Samuel Ackroyd and Ann Waddington. Clara was the sister of Lydia ACKROYD. There was a child of Edwin And Lydia's that I wasn't aware of. Marian - the second child of Edwin & Lydia was a girl born c1882 who appears with them on the 1891 census but not on the 1901 census. In fact she is with Edwin's brother Mortimer in 1901. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1901 census Mortimer Jetley 59 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Farmer 339109 8235064 4163 195 196 Grace Jetley 49 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford 339109 8235065 4163 195 196 George Jetley 24 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Assisting Tailor 339109 8235066 4163 195 196 Edwin Jetley 17 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Assisting Tailor 339109 8235067 4163 195 196 Abraham Jetley 15 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Assisting Tailor 339109 8235068 4163 195 196 Bairstow Jetley 14 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Assisting Tailor 339109 8235069 4163 195 196 Fred Jetley 9 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Assisting Tailor 339109 8235070 4163 195 196 Marian Jetley 19 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Servant General Domestic 339109 8235071 4163 195 196 Joseph Jetley 21 Heaton Brad Yorks Bradford Bradford Milk Deliverer 339109 8235072 4163 195 196 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My correspondent goes on... "I have been told that at one time the TETLEY's were in partnership with my gt grandfather Rufus HOLMES with a farm at Little Egypt in Thornton, Bradford." 1. Tetley Jowett
    2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi folks, Just chasing up some of the folk with Tetley as a middle name, I followed up Tetley Jowett. He was the son of John Jowett and Betty Tetley, who were married 25 Dec 1816 in Bradford. Tetley Jowett was baptised 29 Aug 1824 at Thornton by Bradford. Also baptised on the same day, to John & Betty Jowett, was Harriet Jowett baptised 29 Aug 1824. Either Harriet & Tetley were twins, or their ages at baptism might be misleading! Then a Joseph Jowett was baptised on 28 Aug 1825. Tetley Jowett married Q2 of 1852. This is the 1881 census entry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dwelling: 4 Spring Field Census Place: Thornton In Bradford, York, England Source: FHL Film 1342069 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4468 Folio 23 Page 10 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Tettily JOWITT M 58 M Thornton, York, England Rel: Head Occ: Mason Mary JOWITT M 56 F Silsden, York, England Rel: Wife Occ: Linen Draper Sarrah Ellen JOWITT U 27 F Silsden, York, England Rel: Daur Occ: Assistant Draper ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tetley Jowett's age of 58 indicates that he might have been up to 2 years old at the time of baptism. There is a marriage in Freebmd, which indicates that Tetley Jowett's wife was probably Mary Barran. Interestingly, the 1881 census indicates how Tetley Jowett may have pronounced his christian name when the enumerator called!.... Tettily. He also seems to have pronounced Jowett as Jowitt! 3. Hi folks, buried at Woodhouse cemetery Leeds: Plot 02016 Mary Jane TETLEY died 30th December 1905 aged 47 years Plot 02016 Samuel TETLEY died 15th February 1921 aged 69 years These folk are Samuel (1851-1921) the son of Thomas Tetley (1811-1871) of Birstal/Tong, and his wife, Mary Jane Monthorp (1858-1905). Plot 03479 Jane TETLEY died 30th June 1857 aged 30 years Plot 03479 Mary Ann TETLEY died 24th November 1885 aged 60 years These two have defied all efforts at identification. There are two possibles in the 1881 census, but not enough information to decide between them. Plot 05069 Ann TETLEY aged 55 years no date of death Plot 05069 Caroline TETLEY died no date of death Plot 05069 Eliza TETLEY no date of death or age Plot 05069 Harriet TETLEY died 10th August 1890 aged 48 years Plot 05069 Joseph TETLEY died 19th June 1874 aged 73 years Plot 05069 Susan TETLEY died 26th June 1867 aged 22 years This looks like Joseph (1801-1874) who was born in Dewsbury, but was a butcher for most of his life, in Leeds. I guess that Ann was his wife. Caroline was, I assume, a child who died in infancy, as was Eliza (more certainly). Harriet is the right age to be one of Joseph's daughters, although she seems to be missing from the 1881 census, which is a bit of a worry. Susan was the right age to be Joseph & Ann's youngest daughter. Plot 05146 Ann TETLEY died 7th February 1921 aged 78 years Plot 05146 Eliza TETLEY died 5th May 1869 aged 3 years Plot 05146 George Machan TETLEY died 11th April 1892 aged 21 years Plot 05146 Samuel TETLEY died 7th January 1892 aged 56 years This is Samuel (1835-1892) son of Joseph, above, who was a tobacconist in Leeds. He was living at Thorp Arch in 1881. Ann was his wife, and George his son. I assume that Eliza was another daughter, but her birth would have been very close to one of her siblings. Plot 12789 Mary Ann TETLEY died 15th February 1900 aged 66 years Plot 12789 William TETLEY died 3rd April 1915 aged 89 years This is another son of Joseph, the butcher. Mary Ann was his wife. I'm not aware of any descedants of William & Mary Ann. Plot 14148 Frederick Sidney TETLEY died 5th November 1872 aged 2 months I have no idea who his parents were. Plot 14360 Joseph Firth TETLEY died 19th March 1954 aged 86 years Plot 14360 William Firth TETLEY died 12th May 1900 aged 4 years This looks like Joseph, the son of Samuel, the tobacconist above. I guess that William is his son. Cheers Rich (in Notts)
