    1. The Tetley-Sugdens
    2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi folks, Another discussion that I've been having off-list, relates to Joseph Tetley, who married Elizabeth Sugden in April 1828 at Bradford. The problem is, that I don't know who Joseph's parents were! For some reason, presumably business, Joseph, and family, went to live in Norwich. Some of their children were baptised in both Bradford and Norwich. They seem to have had 7 or possibly 8 children, although only two of them seem to have survived beyond 1841. I wonder if the family were struck by some disease, in the late 1830s, because the father, Joseph, is also missing from the 1841 census, although Elizabeth is not described as a 'widow' until 1851. She was actually described as 'independent' in 1841, which probably describes here income status, rather than her marriage status. The children who survived, were Fanny (1832-) and Betsy Ellen (1833-). Fanny went on to marry David Goldthorpe Sugden, on the 11th May 1859, who, we believe, was a fairly close cousin. Fanny was David's third wife. Betsy didn't marry, and died in 1897 at Brighouse, which is where Fanny and David lived. So, we have a Joseph Tetley, who was born about 1807 or earlier, probably in or near Bradford, of unknown parentage, and who died before 1841, maybe in Norwich. Any more facts relating to Joseph, would be of great interest! Cheers Rich -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. 1. Sarah Elizabeth Tetley
    2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi, One of our new members is Susan, who is connected to Sarah Elizabeth Tetley. Sarah Elizabeth Tetley married John Horton on the 24th December 1836 at St Peter's, Leeds. There was a chap named Tetley Horton, on the 1881 census, who was born in 1847, and may well be a descendant of this couple, but further research is needed there. Susan's great great grandmother was Mary Ann Horton (sister to John Horton) Susan wrote:- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mary married Richard Jarvis, a Hatter, who had a shop in Briggate Leeds. They had twin daughters, Ada and Clara. Clara Jarvis (born 14 Nov 1856) married William Henry Whitelock who became a very successful restauranteur and owned the Turk's Head which became Whitelock's first city luncheon bar and is still situated in a yard leading off from Briggate, Leeds. The Turk's Head was established in 1715 and was used by the cloth merchants to bargain (and drink!) when they brought their cloth to Leeds. Whitelock's is still there with the original fittings but was bought by William Youngers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unfortunately, I don't know who Sarah Elizabeth T. was related to! It isn't clear when she was born, although it would seem that 1815 would be a 'latest' date she could have been born, if she was 21 when she married. The appearance of the Horton family on the 1851 census might be interesting. It should give an age for Sarah. Of the possibilities in the database, there is Sarah, daughter of Joshua and Hannah, who was born in 1813, but, according to my data, she married John G Rowe (although I don't have a date for that marriage), and died in 1851. There was one Sarah, born in 1811, the daughter of Benjamin, but I believe that she died in 1817. Does anyone have any clues, or ideas? 3. Hi Folks, Firstly, I'd just like to welcome some new members to the list. Please feel free to join in any discussions, or start new ones! The list is here for the discussion of the family history of the Tetley, Tetlow, Tatley names, and all other variations. As is often the case, people make contact with us through seeing the TETLEY or TETLOW name on a website, or on a newslist. What follows then, is a discussion on personal email, concerning the individual family involved. I'd like to broaden these discussions out to the list, so I'll go back over some of the exchanges I've been involved in, recently. (I'll post them in seperate emails, so that I don't get confused!) Cheers Rich (For the benefit of new members, there are three 'Richard Tetleys' on this list. I'm the one who lives in Nottinghamshire! We also have a Richard who lives in Yorkshire, and a Richard who lives in the Midlands.)

    1. The death of Shaun Tetley
    2. Richard Tetley
    3. There was a report in the Nottingham Evening post on Saturday the 8th of February 2003, about the unfortunate death of Shaun Tetley, aged 30. It seems that Shaun was an epileptic, and in the course of suffering a fit, fell from the canal boat on which he was travelling. He fell into the Nottingham Canal, at a place called Dunkirk, at 10:30 a.m. on December 16th 2002. His uncle, Anthony Tetley, dived into the freezing waters twice, in an attempt to rescue Shaun, but could not find him in the cold, dark, water. Shaun's father, Alan Tetley, was some 800 yards further up the canal, on another boat, and unaware of the tragedy taking place behind him. The police and firemen, who were called to the scene, recovered Shaun's body some 40 minutes later. The Nottinghamshire coroner, Dr. Nigel Chapman, said that Anthony had done everything he could. It was really difficult to find someone in the dark and murky canal waters. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. Regards Richard

The e-mail notification that someone has left a message on my website doesn't seem to be working for one reason or another! I'll have to look into it. The message you left was: Hi David.....I've come across an ancestor, SAMUEL OGDEN b. 1817/18 in Blackley, Lancashire. On his marriage certificate in 1842 he gives his father as JOSEPH TETLEY. His mother "may" have been MARGARET OGDEN, although this hasn't been proved. Wondering if you have ever run across this TETLEY who must have fathered him? Unfortunately this doesn't mean anything to me. However I have copied in the Tetley Rootsweb list in the hope that someone on that list may be able to help you. Regards David

Benjamin Tetley, born 1768 at Armley, died in 1812 in Leeds (see above). Benjamin and his wife Sarah Wildman were married in 1791 at Leeds parish church. They had 9 children, of which Sarah, born in 1811, was the youngest. Of their nine children, only Benjamin, Maria, Mary, Grace & Sarah were still alive, when Benjamin died, (as far as I know), but nevertheless, I guess Sarah would have looked for a new husband, to support her family. It seems that she married William Inman/Henman 23 Oct 1815 at Leeds parish church. This burial of Sarah neatly ties all this together. 3. Hi folks, From a friend... Death notice in the Scotsman. The Scotsman 1850 March 27 Tetley, James recently medical student of Uni. of Edinburgh died at Asenby-Lodge, Yorkshire The date is the date of the newspaper carrying the death notice. The actual death date would usually be given + commonly the age too, but I don't index those for speed + to try to encourage people not to rely on the index. Sometimes there's also info on cause of death etc., but I don't index that for speed. Many of the deaths are Scottish but others - like this one - happened elsewhere. The Scotsman was published in Edinburgh which is probably why this notice was published in this paper. The wording suggests he didn't complete his degree, since he's not described as a doctor? The uni should have info about him anyway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ James was actually 21 when he died. He was born in 1829, a son of William Tetley and Elizabeth Dresser, and therefore a sibling of Joseph Dresser Tetley of NZ scandal fame! 1. Thomas Walsh Tetley
    2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi folks, I have been sent a newspaper cutting from 1953. It relates to Thomas Walsh Tetley (1874-1953), and his retirement as Medical Officer of Health for the Kirbymoorside rural district, There is a description of his life's work, and a blurred photograph. Thomas was a native of Ilkley, a son of George Edward Tetley (1850-1903) and his wife, Kate Snow Walsh (1848-1925). It seems that Thomas spent many of his years in the Kirbymoorside area. He moved there in 1903, and was still there in 1953. Actually he died later that year, and was buried at Undercliffe in Bradford. He was involved in the introduction of piped water to the area, and introduced district nursing. He was the first owner of a motor car in the district. As a country doctor, with no ambulance service at the time, he found it necessary to perform operations in outlying farms, by candelight, and also introduced 4,000 babies into the world! For those familiar with the books of James Herriot; the area that Thomas Walsh Tetley lived and worked in, was much the same area as that worked by Herriot's creator, Alf Wight. I imagine they must have bumped into each other, because their homes and businesses can't have been more than 17 or 18 miles apart. Both will have been among the early motorists of the area. I can't send the attachment via the list, but will be pleased to send it to anyone who drops me an email. Cheers Richard (the one in Notts) -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK.
