Dear Tom, I found your John Templeton in my database. I picked up the information from FamilySearch.com. It does not list his father. You'll find what I have below my signature. I have not checked it for errors. I also checked the American Genealogical-Biographical Index. It came up with eight Templetons in North Carolina: Arche, David, George, James, John, Joseph, Robert, Rosanah, Thomas, Thomas, and William. Rosanah is listed as having a birth year in the 1770's. All the others show a birth year in the 1750's. The John appears to be yours, as does the William. The reference for John is the 1790 census. For William, it is "Roster of soldiers from N.C. in the Amer. Rev. Comp. By D.A.R. of NC. Durham, NC. 1932. (12,709p.):286." If you'd like the information on any of the others, let me know.
