He was replaced by the Speaker of the Senate, Joseph Maull, as there was no Lt Governor at the time. Maull, however, lasted only six weeks before he died as well. That left Temple as the next in line, and he succeeded to Governor of Delaware - the third man to hold the position during a two year term of office.
