    1. 1664 VA Temples

    3. Thinking about the year of 1664 when the three Temples came into VA (Edward, James, John, and Thomas Temple)... I have tried to find some significance to the time frame. (very brief) 1649 King Charles I, was sentence to death by a Court of 67 Judges. Two of these Judges were Sir Peter Temple and James Temple. Cromwell took control over the county with an iron grip that became very unpopular with the people. 1660 Charles II, (son of Charles I) came back from exile to cheering crowds. He promised to pardon all, with the exception of those who had condemned his father to death. Sir Peter Temple and James Temple were given life imprisonment (did they actually serve out this sentence?) and Temple Hall was confiscated. In Antonia Fraser’s The Weaker Vessel (p 32)... (late 1640s) Yet her beguiling and chatty love letter to William Temple, later an important diplomat in the reign of Charles II,... William Temple’s father sympathized with Parliament. (I include this to show that some Temples thrived under Charles II while others weren’t so fortunate). Hardly conclusive for the time frame of 1664; unless it was a backlash from King Charles II restoration... food for thought. A good site for Virginia information is the LVA at: http://image.vtls.com/collections/ This Library of Virginia site is really slow, but a wonderful online resource.
