Park: I too have had a heck of a time trying to figure which way these older lines go. As I said in my first posting, I haven't worked much on this line yet, so the sources I have personally confirmed are thin. I have proved out very little of this line at this point, and as I said, have put it together from the work of various other people. The principal sources of my information are: Some Temple Pedigrees by Levi D. Temple; a genealogy prepared for my great uncle by someone named Debrett (no other name given, no address) called The Ancestry of the Temple Family of Ohio, dated January 1982, and a chart which accompanies the narrative; Marriage Records of Clermont Co, Ohio and Clermont County Ohio Wills, Estates and Guardianships; the LDS Ancestral file (although not much relied upon by me); some on-line pals; for generations after RC Temple b. 1781, the family bible which is currently in the possession of a family member; and for the most recent generations just passed, various interviews with family members, SSDI and various records in Los Angeles County. The object of Debrett's research was "to trace the ancestry of the Reverend Ichabod Temple, Minister of the Lindale Baptist Church at Lindale, Ohio, which he founded in 1819." Debrett could find no links to England, which he spent much of the narratigve discussing, but research in Maine had "shown" that he had nine children born there with wife Mary (Clarke) and two deeds in Lincoln County ME "suggested" that Ichabod and brother Ebenezer were sons of Richard Temple and wife Elizabeth of Bowdoinham, ME. Unfortunately, I don't find a reference for those deeds; but there are referenced Lincoln Co. , ME Probate Records, Portland, 1895, p. 124. (Also see History of Bowdoinham, referenced below.) I know that Debrett thought the Levi book must have had some inaccuracies. As you look at the depth of Debrett's sources some of which I list below, you can see why I might have some degree of confidence in his work. Nevertheless, I haven't seen the records and every time I look at this I get confused. This from the ancestral file: Abraham Temple m. Abigail ....Richard Temple b. 1618/23 m. Joanna ........Abraham Temple b. June 4, 1652 m. Debroah Hadlocke ............Richard Temple b. Oct 6, 1674 m. Sarah Parling ................Joseph Temple Then I have this from Debrett: Abraham Temple m. Abigail ....Richard Temple b. 1623 m. Joanna ........Richard Temple b. Oct. 6, 1654 m. Sarah Parling ............Joseph Temple August 28, 1694 m. Abigail Stearns I'm not sure where I came up with Mary Laughton as a possible second wife, but I questioned this myself. Debrett did not list her as a second wife, but only named Elizabeth Gustin. (Likewise, I don't have strong feelings about Cassandra Edwards marrying my Rev. Ichabod, although it's clear she married somebody's Ichabod.) I am not familiar with the book written by Abert Temple and Danny Smith. I don't know what to say about your conjecture, except that from my point of view, it's interesting. My Richard Temple m. Elizabeth Gustin was a cordainer (someone who works with Cordoban leather -- a shoemaker, probably), according to Debrett's research. Where did you come up with a Dr. title? I will refer to Debrett's work for the marriage of Abigail and Joseph. Here are some of his sources for Joseph: Middlesex Co., Probate Records, Cambridge Mass #22326 establishes Joseph Brabrooke as guardian; Middlesex Co., Probate Records, Cambridge Mass #22288 has Joseph as administering the estate of his deceased son Ebenezer; Chelmsford Massachusetts Church Records records communions for Joseph and Abigail; Middlesex Co., Register of Deeds, Cambridge, Mass) Some of his sources for his son Richard Temple, b March 7, 1724/25 Concord MA ( and of Wexford, Acton, Falmouth ME and Bowdoinham, ME) m. Elizabeth Gustin are: Massachusetts State Archives, Boston, MA, for colonial and French & Indian war records; a source listed as Cus. Deed 4:380; York County Deeds, Alfred, Maine, 32:?; Middlesex County Probate Records cited above; Middlesex County Registry of Deeds, Cambridge, MA Deed 691:215, wherein Richard was deeded land from his parents; Cumberland Co. Registry of Deeds, Portland Maine 1:443 wherein Richard purchased land from his father in law's estate; Middlesex Co. Registry of Deeds, Cambridge MA Deed 691:210; History of Bowdoinham Maine by Silas Adams, Fairfield Publishing Co., Fairfield, ME, c. 1912, various pages cited. Other sources cited: Pioneers of Massachusetts, Charles H. Pope, ZGen. Pub. Co., 1969, p449; History of Salem, Mass., Sidney Perley, Salem, 1926, I:444, I:462, and II:199. I will definitely visit your website. Please tell me what you think of all of this, and if you look at these sources, tell me what you find. For myself, I would love to be able to document the path that these people took from Maine to Ohio to Illinois/Indiana? to Wichita to Arizona to Los Angeles. Thank you for your interest and for your help. I hope this is sueful to you and that you will get back to me with what you think or find. Terry Ryan
