I'm interested in that book you mentioned by Oliver Perry Temple "The Notable Tennessee". I'll try searching for it when I get the chance. Another book of interest to me is one mentioned on Parker's site: "The Rise of the Temple's; A Millenium of Power & Progress, 716 A.D. to the Present, & Genealogy" by Albert R. Temple & Danny D. Smith & published by The Temple Family Association of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1973. I didn't know there was a Temple Family Association. Does it still exsist? When did it start? Where can you find the information they have produced through the years? While I haven't seen either of these books yet, I like you, have photocopies of a few pages from Levi's book. If your interested in Levi's book its in the Family History Catalog of the Mormon Church, and you can go to your nearest Mormon Church and order it on microfilm at their Family History Center and view it there when they receive it through the mail from Salt Lake City. You can also buy a copy of Levi's book. I haven't bought Levi's book yet, but I found where you can purchase a copy of it if you are interested, it's not cheap though. It's still for sale by Higginson Book Company. They have their own web site at http://www.higginsonbooks.com You can get the details about ordering the book at their website. Also, I read in a book on surnames at my local Family History Center that Temple was the last name of 1. an infant that was abandoned at a Temple or Church or 2. was a member of the Knight's Templar. I think your two accounts sound good to. It looks like with all these different accounts on the origin's of the Temple surname either all or some are right, and people aquired the name different ways, or only one account is right and the others are incorrect.
