I hope this helps. Ancestors of Captain Robert TEMPLE - 1 Feb 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. Captain Robert TEMPLE was born in 1691 in Ireland. Date of 1691 based on age at time of death. Other sources give 1694. He Moved in 1717 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. He died on 23 Dec 1775 in Woburn, Middlesex, MA. Prominent Americans gives 14 Apr 1754. Formerly a Captain in the Irish Army, came to America with Capt James Luzmore of Topsham, England. Robert purchased land on the Kennebec River and Merry Meeting Bay in Maine and during 1718- 1719, he brought over several hundred Scotch-Irish settlers aboard five ships in an attempt to found a colony called Temple Bar (now Bath, Maine). Dummer's Indian War broke up this colony. Captain Penhallow, writing to the Governor of Massachusetts on 15 Jun 1722 mentioned the fight which broke up the colony. The larger part of them went to Pennsylvania. Robert (and possibly his father) returned to East Boston, where in time he built himself a fine mansion. He has a pew in the old North Church in Boston to this day. Later, in 1750, he purchased the estate called Ten Hills, on the Mystic River. Temple was of a distinguished family in Ireland, and the ancestor of the numerous and respected family of the late Lt. Governor Thomas L. Winthrop of Boston, who married his grand-daughter Elizabeth Bowdoin. His will gave the Ten Hills farm to his wife, farm at Chelsea, and Negroes "Bandon," "Kerry," and "Mallow." John received the Mount farm at Worcester, the farm at Eastward, and Negroes "Dutchess," "Sambo," and "Limerick." William received farms at Kennebec and Woburn, and Negro "Jack." SECOND GENERATION 2. Thomas TEMPLE died in 1694. Research seems to indicate he never came to America. The confusion stems from trying to identify which Thomas Temple was the father of Robert Temple of Ten Hills (Robert is covered extensively in his own write-up). The Rise of the Temples says that Robert Temple, who came here from Ireland in 1717 had a father named Thomas [of which] there is no dispute, but his exact identity is another matter. T.A. Emmet in hse EMMET FAMILY seems to be describing a real person, even quoting from one of his letters, but it must be accepted as fact, in light of what Richard E. Temple of New Zealand writes, that this Thomas could not have been of Ten Hills. TEMPLE MEMOIRS indicates that Robert Temple's father was a poverty-stricken ship's carpenter who neve came to America. Albert Temple further explains that if we are confused, we have much company, becuase it was this very confusion concerning the father of Robert which finally cost this line the baronetcy of Stowe after enjoying the honor for over a century. He was married to Agnes WHITE. 3. Agnes WHITE. Thomas TEMPLE and Agnes WHITE had the following children: i. Rebecca TEMPLE. 1 ii. Captain Robert TEMPLE. THIRD GENERATION 4. Sir Purbeck TEMPLE was born in Stanton Bury, Buckinghamshire, England. Sir Purbeck TEMPLE had the following children: 2 i. Thomas TEMPLE. ii. Sir John Purbeck TEMPLE died in 1694. He was born in Edscombe, Surry, England. FOURTH GENERATION 8. Sir John TEMPLE died on 23 Sep 1632. He was born in Stanton Bury, Buckinghamshire, England. Father was Sir Thomas Temple, 1st Baronet Stowe. He was married to Dorothy LEE. 9. Dorothy LEE died on 3 Sep 1632. Sir John TEMPLE and Dorothy LEE had the following children: i. Peter TEMPLE. ii. Edward TEMPLE. 4 iii. Sir Purbeck TEMPLE. iv. Thomas TEMPLE resided in 1670 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. He died on 27 Mar 1674 in Ealing, Middlesex, England. He was a Governor of Nova Scotia.
