    1. Richard Temple's wife
    2. Hi all, I sent this message out a few days ago but it never went through. I will try again at this time. Recently there has been a few questions about who the wife of Richard Temple b. 1623 in England might be. Below are some entries from various publications: 1. "The Rise of the Temples" pg 87 item 8Z has a note as follows: "Richard2 (Levi D. Temple said he married Johanna, but Danny Smith found evidence that it was prob. Hannah Prichard). 2. "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" by Torrey pg 732 has entries a) Templar, Richard & Ann/Hannah (Prichard), m/2 Nathaniel Morton b. 1642(3?); Yarmouth. b) Temple, Richard (?ca. 1623-1689) & Joanna ? (-1688);b. 1647; Salem/Charlestown/Concord 3. "Charlestown MA Vital Records" Vol 1 by NEHGS, 1984 has entries a) Abigail dau of Richard Temple 15(5) 1647 pg 10 b) Richard son of Richard Temple Oct. 15, 1654 pg 15 c) Deborah Templar, dau to Richard Templar & Ann his wife Oct 4, 1657 pg 18 4. "Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown 1629-1818" by Thomas Bellows Wyman K-Z, 1879 has entries on pg 937 a) Templar, Richard. Yarmouth; Chas.; m. Hannah Prichard [1] who m. Richard, Oct. 15, 1654; bapt. 5 (5) 1663; both at Chas. iii Isaac, 1657, at Concord 5. An unknown publication has the following entries on page 448 a) TEMPLAR, TEMPLER, TEMPLE, Richard, husbandman, Yarmouth, constable 4 june, 1645, propr., town officer 1650. Ch. Abigail b. at Charlestown 15 (5( 1647. His wife, dau of Richard Pritchet, adm. chh. Charlestown 29 (5) 1660. Ch. Richard bapt. at Char. 5 (5) 1663 6. "Yarmouth MA Vital Records to 1850" has entries a) Hannah, the daughter of Richard Templare was b. the 5th of Jan. Anno Domine 1642. b) Samuel, the son of Richard Templer born the 22nd of Jan 1648. 7. "Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England", showing three generations of those who came before May, 1692, on the Basis of Farmer's Register. by James Savage VOL IV 1862. pg 266 has entries a) TEMPLAR, TEMPLE or TEMPLER, Abraham, Salem 1637, had Abraham b) Abraham, Concord, s. perhaps of the preced. m. 1673, Deborah Hadlock; had perhaps rem. to Charlestown, there had a d. b. 1686; but certain. was at Concord freem. 1690. c) Richard, Yarmouth, there in the list of those able to bear arms, 1643, by w. Hannah, d. of Richard Pritchard, had Hannah, b. 5 Jan. 1643; Samuel, 22 Jan 1648; Esther, bur 13 Sept 1649; perhaps James; Deborah, d. 5 Aug 1657; Deborah, again, bapt. 4 Oct 1657; beside Richard, 15 Oct. 1656, bapt. 5 July 1663; but rem. with f. and mo. of his w. to Charlestown, 1660 From ascert. that his wid. m. 10 Apr 1674, Nathaniel Morton, seer. of Plymouth Col. I was let to correct the erroneous inference, authorized by Charlestown rec. that he was recent. d. in Mar 1678 as his ho. is ment. but not the person. She outliv. the dignitary, and d. 26 Dec. 1690, aged 66. In the will of Pritchard, 22 Jan 1669 are ment. Hannah, w. of R.T. made extrix, and the three ch. By this docum. alone could the confusion of Templar and Temple into wh. Farmer fell, be explained. d) Richard, Salem 1644, Charlestown, 1646, there by w. Joanna had Abigail, b. 15 July 1647; Richard, 1654; rem. to Concord, had Isaac, 19 June 1657, was freem. 1672. Exactly how Danny D. Smith deducted that Hannah Prichard may have been Richard Temple's wife is unknown. It seems clear to me that Richard Templar who m. Ann/Hannah Prichard was an entirely different person than Richard Temple who m. Joanna. The two Richards originally lived in two different regions of MA that are very far apart. Their children as given have different names and are born on different dates. The coincidence happens to be that both Richards moved to Charleston MA and both had sons by the name of Richard in Charlestown. There apparently was a Farmer's Register which had confused the two as being the same person as evidenced by other authors giving both Richards the same baptism date of 5 July 1663. I believe this date belongs to Richard Templar Jr. Richard Templar Sr. is the one that is listed in Yarmouth who is authorized to bear arms. Does anyone have other documents which may prove or disprove any of what I have said? Ralph
