Seems no place is safe from these people! Sorry, nothing we can do about that unless we go private... and I really think that wouldn't be a good idea, considering what we hope to acheive with the list. Joanne

Miriam, I don't remember what I typed, but you are right about Oliver's book. Sorry, if I typed it in wrong... I have been jumping back and forth between sources (you should see my desk!) so, keep me honest. On the Elizabeth Temple witnessing the Quaker marriage - did you get the impression that she was Quaker? William of Chester Co, PA is the only one of the early Temples that I know of that was Quaker. Joanne, You wrote: >Prehaps, Oliver or Mary bought Levi's book? > Which again brings us back to sources - I have never seen the actual copy >of Levis book (only photocopies), does he cite any sources? I'm interested in that book you mentioned by Oliver Perry Temple "The Notable Tennessee". I'll try searching for it when I get the chance. Another book of interest to me is one mentioned on Parker's site: "The Rise of the Temple's; A Millenium of Power & Progress, 716 A.D. to the Present, & Genealogy" by Albert R. Temple & Danny D. Smith & published by The Temple Family Association of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1973. I didn't know there was a Temple Family Association. Does it still exsist? When did it start? Where can you find the information they have produced through the years? While I haven't seen either of these books yet, I like you, have photocopies of a few pages from Levi's book. If your interested in Levi's book its in the Family History Catalog of the Mormon Church, and you can go to your nearest Mormon Church and order it on microfilm at their Family History Center and view it there when they receive it through the mail from Salt Lake City. You can also buy a copy of Levi's book. I haven't bought Levi's book yet, but I found where you can purchase a copy of it if you are interested, it's not cheap though. It's still for sale by Higginson Book Company. They have their own web site at http://www.higginsonbooks.com You can get the details about ordering the book at their website. Also, I read in a book on surnames at my local Family History Center that Temple was the last name of 1. an infant that was abandoned at a Temple or Church or 2. was a member of the Knight's Templar. I think your two accounts sound good to. It looks like with all these different accounts on the origin's of the Temple surname either all or some are right, and people aquired the name different ways, or only one account is right and the others are incorrect. Hi again: It appears that something dropped off the first line of 1880 Bradley County, AR Census (E.D.15). It should read: 45 381 471 Tilmon Temple 24 M AR (my GGF) Helen (Boldebook) Leigh musicgal@phnx.uswest.net
Parker: (Re: Your message to me of 01 Feb 1998) Thanks for writing. Your information sounds very interesting. I did find Stanmore Temple in the 1860 AR Census of Bradley County, but I have not made the connection yet. He is listed on same page as my John H. Temple, believed to be my great-great grandfather, father of Tillman/Tilmon. He may be John H.'s brother (or cousin?). Unknown connection of Oliver Perry Temple and Newton Temple of AR... History of Benton, Washington, Carroll Cos AR. p 1075 Hon. Newton J Temple, a very prominent attorney of Eureka Springs was born Winchester, TN May 16, 1830. He was the son of Addison Temple and Nancy Waggoner, both natives of TN. Addison is now living in Franklin Co, TN... his wife d about 1868. In 1864 Newton J went back to TN to the close of the war. In 1867 he went to Knoxville, TN and practiced law with Oliver Perry Temple till 1868. He married Angelette McIntosh, a native of MS. They have one daughter Maudie. In the 1850 Franklin Co TN. #866-130 Addison Temple 51 TN Nancy 45 Ky Solomon 23 Newton 20 Wesley 19 Mary 11 Martha 8 (note: I found no marriage record for Addison and Nancy in the TN marriage records). That Oliver and Newton are practising law together shows there is a connection - but how is a complete mystery to me. Anyone?
Hello Ralph, This is great information! With all this pooling of resources we can't help but solve so many Temple mysteries. Thank you for sharing this with us. Joanne
Dear Temple genealogists. Below is a listing of what I pasted from my Excel file. It should be the complete 1910 census of MIchigan. As you see it is a little sloppy. I will in the future try to come up with a format that will be neat when pasted. It may be a little difficult but you can use the information in italics form as the header and match it to each line. If anyone is interested in this information, I can give you Temples from each of the census'. Good luck in trying to figure this out. Sincerely, Ralph L. Please, don't send attachments through the list. I had one that the archives kicked back... evidently it will accept some, but not others. So, the best policy is not to send any. I know this is a pain and I am sorry. If you would just copy and paste large amounts of text, this will insure that all posts go through. Thank you, Joanne

CHigg31401@aol.com wrote: > > Has anyone the ancestry or descendants of ROBERT of TEMPLE HALL. > > Brought over Scot/Irish folk to make settlement at Bath Maine ca 1720 > > Thanks CHiggCarol: Here is what I could dig up on Capt Robert Temple's ancestry. I hope this helps. Ancestors of Captain Robert TEMPLE - 1 Feb 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. Captain Robert TEMPLE was born in 1691 in Ireland. Date of 1691 based on age at time of death. Other sources give 1694. He Moved in 1717 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. He died on 23 Dec 1775 in Woburn, Middlesex, MA. Prominent Americans gives 14 Apr 1754. Formerly a Captain in the Irish Army, came to America with Capt James Luzmore of Topsham, England. Robert purchased land on the Kennebec River and Merry Meeting Bay in Maine and during 1718- 1719, he brought over several hundred Scotch-Irish settlers aboard five ships in an attempt to found a colony called Temple Bar (now Bath, Maine). Dummer's Indian War broke up this colony. Captain Penhallow, writing to the Governor of Massachusetts on 15 Jun 1722 mentioned the fight which broke up the colony. The larger part of them went to Pennsylvania. Robert (and possibly his father) returned to East Boston, where in time he built himself a fine mansion. He has a pew in the old North Church in Boston to this day. Later, in 1750, he purchased the estate called Ten Hills, on the Mystic River. Temple was of a distinguished family in Ireland, and the ancestor of the numerous and respected family of the late Lt. Governor Thomas L. Winthrop of Boston, who married his grand-daughter Elizabeth Bowdoin. His will gave the Ten Hills farm to his wife, farm at Chelsea, and Negroes "Bandon," "Kerry," and "Mallow." John received the Mount farm at Worcester, the farm at Eastward, and Negroes "Dutchess," "Sambo," and "Limerick." William received farms at Kennebec and Woburn, and Negro "Jack." SECOND GENERATION 2. Thomas TEMPLE died in 1694. Research seems to indicate he never came to America. The confusion stems from trying to identify which Thomas Temple was the father of Robert Temple of Ten Hills (Robert is covered extensively in his own write-up). The Rise of the Temples says that Robert Temple, who came here from Ireland in 1717 had a father named Thomas [of which] there is no dispute, but his exact identity is another matter. T.A. Emmet in hse EMMET FAMILY seems to be describing a real person, even quoting from one of his letters, but it must be accepted as fact, in light of what Richard E. Temple of New Zealand writes, that this Thomas could not have been of Ten Hills. TEMPLE MEMOIRS indicates that Robert Temple's father was a poverty-stricken ship's carpenter who neve came to America. Albert Temple further explains that if we are confused, we have much company, becuase it was this very confusion concerning the father of Robert which finally cost this line the baronetcy of Stowe after enjoying the honor for over a century. He was married to Agnes WHITE. 3. Agnes WHITE. Thomas TEMPLE and Agnes WHITE had the following children: i. Rebecca TEMPLE. 1 ii. Captain Robert TEMPLE. THIRD GENERATION 4. Sir Purbeck TEMPLE was born in Stanton Bury, Buckinghamshire, England. Sir Purbeck TEMPLE had the following children: 2 i. Thomas TEMPLE. ii. Sir John Purbeck TEMPLE died in 1694. He was born in Edscombe, Surry, England. FOURTH GENERATION 8. Sir John TEMPLE died on 23 Sep 1632. He was born in Stanton Bury, Buckinghamshire, England. Father was Sir Thomas Temple, 1st Baronet Stowe. He was married to Dorothy LEE. 9. Dorothy LEE died on 3 Sep 1632. Sir John TEMPLE and Dorothy LEE had the following children: i. Peter TEMPLE. ii. Edward TEMPLE. 4 iii. Sir Purbeck TEMPLE. iv. Thomas TEMPLE resided in 1670 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. He died on 27 Mar 1674 in Ealing, Middlesex, England. He was a Governor of Nova Scotia. Became Governor of Nova Scotia. v. Dorothy TEMPLE was born in 1610 in Biddleston and Stanon-Bury, England. She died on 15 Aug 1687 in Parvenham, Bedford, England. vi. Hester TEMPLE. vii. Mary TEMPLE was born in 1623. -- L. Parker Temple Researching the branches of the TEMPLE family See my home page at http://www.erols.com/lptemple/house.htm
