    3. The John Temple, son of Major is posing quite a dilema. May I ask what is the documentation of John Temple of Westmoreland Co, PA being the son of Major Temple and Mary Kennedy? The only way I can see us figuring this out is to compare sources. I have very little on John: 1. Will of Major Temple written in Aug. 1816 leaving part of his estate to the "heirs of son John". Surely, meaning that John is deceased as of this date? 2. Giles Co, TN court records showing a John Temple's will proven in June 1816 and orphan papers on several girls - orphans of John Temple. 3. Several Superior Court Minutes of Greene Co, TN Sept 1793-95 showing John Temple in Greene. 4. 1797 Tax list of Greene Co, TN. showing John Temple 5. 1812 Tax list of Greene Co, TN, " 5. Some odds and ends on Giles Co, Tn records that really don't prove anything; dated 1815. When is the John in Westmoreland showing up there? It could very well be that the John Temple in Giles is not Major's John. So, I am really curious to know the circumstances that support the Westmoreland John as being Major's son. >>> Name: John TEMPLE Sex: Male Father: Major TEMPLE (1736-1790) Mother: Mary KENNEDY (1739-1800) Individual Facts Birth 28 May 1758 in Westmoreland Co., PA Death 28 May 1828 (age 70) Marriages/Children 1. 2. It was great to get the notes from the last Temple Chat session. I hope this can be done each month for those of us that can't make it. BOB303 - You said that you didn't believe that Joanna Shepey was the wife of Richard Temple b. abt 1623 in England. I have information from Park Temple that states otherwise. He gives his sources as the Boston Transcript newspaper, 29 January 1923. Also New England Marriages Prior to 1700, page 732 (by C.A.Torrey, pub in Baltimore, 1985), and Concord-Births, Marriages and Deaths 1625-1850 Town Records of Concord, Mass. Park's address is lptemple@erols.com and he has a home page at http://www.eros.com/lptemple/home.htm The homepage has lots of Temple information in it. Also I have Abraham, son of Richard, as born in 1652 rather than 1642. What sources do you have? CHigg31401--As you can see from the Dec log, I have at least two Parmenas Temples, one b. 4 Jul 1752 in Worcester, married Anna Laughton, and the other b. 25 Feb 1783, m.Hannah Caldwell. FDewey329--I have a Richard b. 6 Oct 1674 m. Mary Barker. Had information re them it you need it. Again, thanks for the copy of the chat activity. 1. Isham and John TEMPLE of NC
    2. L. Parker Temple
    3. To All: I need help resolving confusion I have found in several sources over the husband of Axey/Agey Temple in Wake County NC. Here's what I have: The Marriage Register of Wake County lists Axey Temple marrying John Temple (yes, they were cousins) 14 Jul 1863. In other sources, such as the Temple Family of Wake County, I have Axey and Agey given as the alternative names for the TEMPLE who married John. To add to the problem, however, I have uncovered another source which gives Agey as short for Agnes (probably a good surmise), but offers that her husband was actually Isham TEMPLE, and they were married in Wake County on 18 Jun 1863. Isham seems to be the son of Peter R. TEMPLE and Mary WELLINGTON. There seems to be little possibility that we are dealing with two Axey TEMPLEs. The records do not support that, near as I can tell. But having said that, I'm stumped for what else. Are John and Isham somehow the same person? Why two different marriage dates - is one the intention or bond? I am open to any and all ideas, especially if you know what the real story is. Will be happy to exchange any further information to help solve this one. Thanks in advance. Park -- L. 3. Park, Thanks for the TEMPLE/BRITTON marriage note. I guess it's well documented that families followed each other into the new territories, so the information of William BRITTON and Margaret TEMPLE was interesting, mainly because of the dates. The date you have of their marriage in Franklin Co. Ohio is 25 Dec. 1828. THOMAS TEMPLE with JANE BRITTON TEMPLE and their several children purchased land in Franklin Co. Ohio in July of 1829. We, of course, don't know where they lived previously to that. A new trail to follow! Linda

    1. THOMAS TEMPLE 1772-1845/SARAH WRIGHT TEMPLE/JANE BRITTON TEMPLE
    2. lkwade
    3. I'm interested in reopening a theory Ethel Temple Jensen(my mother) was working on 25 years ago, but was discounted by 2 separate genealogy research professionals at the time, concerning THOMAS TEMPLE and his first wife SARAH WRIGHT TEMPLE. I am searching for THOMAS'S history before his first documented arrival in Union Co. Ohio. My 3g-grandfather died August 9, 1772 and was buried in the Temple family plot on the family land in Union Co. Ohio. His headstone read - "Died August 9, 1845, age 73 yrs., 3 mos., 20 days". Calculating that, I come with his birthdate as April 20, 1772. THOMAS was married twice(that we are aware). His first wife was SARAH WRIGHT. To our knowledge, his only surviving child from this marriage was JOSEPH b. Feb. 23, 1801 (in PA. according to the 1880 census record given by his son JOSEPH, JR). THOMAS purchased land on July 11, 1829 in Norwich Twp., Franklin Co. Ohio. He married JANE BRITTON around 1814. They had 11 children(one not verified). Here's the mystery. In Some Temple Pedigrees by Levi Temple(taken from Concord MA Vital Records, page 387 - plus I have a attested record by the town clerk of Concord), there was a THOMAS TEMPLE who married a SARAH WRIGHT in Ipswich NH(now MA) on June 12 1802. This would be one year after JOSEPH TEMPLE'S birthdate. This THOMAS AND SARAH had 4 known children: SARAH TEMPLE B. July 15 1803, THOMAS WRIGHT TEMPLE b. Dec. 14, 1804, MARY ANN TEMPLE b. Oct. 14 1809, and LOVE TEMPLE, b. 4 June 1811. We have tentative proof that our SARAH WRIGHT TEMPLE died in 1813. The above mentioned THOMAS was born Sept. 9, 1770. This would be approx. 1 1/2 years off from our Ohio THOMAS, according to his gravestone. In the 1880 census, our Ohio THOMAS' children and grandchildren gave incredibly differing information as to who their grandfather was and where he was born, so it could stand to reason that when carving his headstone, they came up with the wrong date. The puzzle with our Ohio THOMAS is, where was he from his birth of @1772 to 1829. His oldest living child was born in 1801, his next child born in 1815, by his second wife JANE BRITTON TEMPLE. 1. Could the THOMAS and SARAH found in the Concord MA records been ours? They were married in 1802. If so, what happened to their 4 children, born between 1803-1811? Was there have been an epidemic in Middlesex Co around 1812? 2. Could Joseph have been a child from an even earlier marriage(or even illegitimate)? JOSEPH'S records show SARAH as his mother - she raised him, after all. THOMAS was 29 in 1801, fairly old for a first marriage? 3. We know that the parents of the Concord THOMAS were PETER (d. Jan 28, 1820) and LOIS (d. Mar 28?, 1816)TEMPLE. They had an agreement with THOMAS, that he would inherit their estate if he took care of them in their old age. I found a THOMAS TEMPLE and wife and 15 year old child listed in the MA census of 1830. I don't know if this would be the same Concord THOMAS or not. To clarify some of this, I would need what? 1. Possible death records of the Concord children. 2. More information on the THOMAS listed in the 1830 Middlesex census - is this the original Concord THOMAS with his youngest child still at home? Or a different THOMAS altogether. 3. Did Massachusetts have birth and death records in 1800-1813? Ohio didn't until 1867. 4. Is there an earlier marriage record for the Concord THOMAS? 5. Could there be a history of Middlesex Co. MA from 1750-1820? Possibly the PETER AND LOIS are mentioned. Thank you to whoever has read through all of this. I hope I haven't made any errors. I'm open to all suggestions. Linda

He is likewise to provide a suitable and sufficient subsistence for said Servants and Stock of my Wife during her natural life. Item. To heirs of my deceased son William, Grand-daughter, Mary E.R. Temple, daughter of John Temple. To Jenny, one dish. Written 22 Jan 1818 Mary Temple wit: V. Sevier Eliza Temple This will was exhibited by Thomas Temple and contested by James Temple. note: Mary Temple’s pattern of naming grandchildren appears to be that she named only the older ones; for some were born when she wrote this will, but were not named. Children of Major Temple and Mary Kennedy; order of birth unknown. William Temple, son of Major Temple. b ??, d pre 1816 prob TN. m 6-14-1797 Jane Smith. She was b 1770-80. Jane is in the 1830 census of Knox Co, TN. with 3 males ages 15-20. William evidently died intestate...no records have been found on his estate. Making the determination of his children a difficult task. Only two of his children were named in his mother Mary’s will - James and Mary K. This is his believe issue: 1. James Harvey Temple b 1800 TN, d aft 1850 m 11-23-1824 Mary E Alexander in Roane Co, TN. James is in the Knox Co, TN court records throughout the 1820s. He is in Roane 1830 &40, and in Greene Co, IL 1850. 2. Mary K. Temple m John Galbraith 7-23-1825 Knox Co, TN. 3. Jeremiah Smith Temple b 1803 TN, d 1858 Knox Co, TN. m 1st 1 8-15-1826 Nancy Wilkins in Knox Co, TN. (this is my line) m 2nd 6-21-1856 Eveline Alexander in Monroe Co, TN. 4. Thomas S. Temple b 1805 TN, said to have moved to AR after 1850, but I have found no records on him there. m 1-6-1831 Polly Frost in Knox Co, TN. 5. Pulaski L Temple b 1810-20, he is said to have died young. In 1840 he has living with him a female age 70-80, who maybe his mother Jane. 6?? Pleasant J Temple b 1814 LA (according to the 1850 Mortality Schedule) d Jan 1850, he was a school teacher and died of fever. m 6-23-1836 Mary Jane Galbraith in Knox Co, TN. If this is the son of William and Jane, then his being born in LA certainly makes me wonder... He is of the right age to be one of the boys living with Jane in 1830, which still leaves another male of that age who remains unknown. 7. male b 1810-15 There is a Daniel Temple in the 1840 census of Knox Co, TN who maybe the missing son. This Daniel is in the court records 1835-1839, then nothing more on him. I have found no marriage records on a Daniel Temple. Josiah Temple b ?, d pre 1816 probably TN. son of Major Temple m 12-8-1800 Isabella Fain in Greene Co, TN. Josiah is another of Major’s children that remains somewhat of a mystery. Josiah is on the Giles Co, TN tax list of 1812. Mary mentions two daughter’s of Josiah, but names only one: 1. Maria Temple b 1802 TN m 4-25-1820 William Hammer Thomas Temple b 5-1-1766 SC, d 6-30-1852 Greene Co, TN. son of Major Temple m 6-13-1791 Jane Moore in Greene Co, TN. Thomas was the only son of Major’s that lived to the 1850 census in which he states he was b in SC. Major owned land in a section of NC that became SC and this maybe where Thomas was born. Jane Moore Temple was b 5-16-1767 d 1-16-1859, she left a will in Greene Co, TN in which she names the following daughters: 1. Mary K Temple m 12-24-1815 James Robinson 2. Margaret Temple m 2-3-1820 William M Biggs 3. Elizabeth Temple m 8-1-1822 Allan G Gallaher 4. Sarah R Temple m James Biggs 5. Jane Temple m 5-14-1835 James M Slemmons 6. Eleanore (Ellen) Temple m 8-25-1830 David McCord 7. Isabella Temple John Temple b ? d 6-5-1816 Giles Co, TN. son of Major Temple. m 12-19-1795 Jane Russell in Greene Co, TN. John Temple’s will was proven 6-5-1816 in Giles Co, TN., but I have not found an actual will, only the recording of it being proven. Then in the orphan records we have the following: Ebenezer Petty guardian of Nancy Temple, Samuel Briggs guardian of Matilda Temple, Thomas K Gordon guardian of Eliza Temple, orphans of John Temple. The Gordon’s are connected through Mary Kennedy, who’s neice married a Gordon and lived in Giles Co, TN; I am not sure of the other two. There is a real possiblity that John had grown children by 1816 as proven by Mary Kennedy Temple's will where she names only one of John's children - Mary E. R. Mary Temple wasn't named in the orphan papers. 1. Mary E. R. Temple 2. Nancy Temple 3. Matilda Temple 4. Eliza Temple James Temple b c1773? d 1822 near Memphis, TN while on a surveying expedition. Son of Major Temple. m 2-12-1811 Mary Craig in Greene Co, TN. After James’ death Mary remarried 11-3-1835 Henry A Farnsworth in Greene Co, TN. James’ son Oliver Perry Temple states his father was about 50 years old at the time of his death in 1822... yet, in the 1783 tax list James is listed with Major Temple, which should make him older than the ten yrs he would be according to Oliver’s date. So, this remains unresolved. In the Court Minutes of Greene Co, TN James’ children are named: 1. Nancy R Temple m 9-4-1828 John T Barkley 2. Eliza M Temple (court minutes record her as being a lunatic) 3. Jane M Temple m 4-30-1832 John G Farnsworth 4. Major Samuel Temple b 1816 TN, m Margaret Biddle 5. William Temple b 1818 m Mary ? 6. Oliver Perry Temple b 1-27-1820 Greene Co,TN, d 11-2-1907 Knox Co,TN. m Scotia Caledonea Hume 7. Eleanor B Temple m 4-21-1841 Washington M Wilhite Jenny Temple, daughter of Major Temple. She is named as the wife of John Berry in Major’s will. I have nothing more on Jenny.

    3. Here are a couple of old queries I came across, thought I would pass the on in case anyone knew anything about them. I have never tried writing them due to their age. Footprints, Feb 1989 Tarrant Co, TX... ... proof of parents of George W Temple. born 1822 Tennessee. And of his wife Martha Sutton whom he married 1 June 1840 in Tuscaloosa Co, AL. In 1850 George and Martha were in Marshall Co, MS and in 1860 Smith Co, TX with children William H, James A, Dempsey, and Samuel born 1842-1860 Rowan County Register, NC 1988 What was the Temple and Smith family connection in Rowan and surrounding counties c1800? Henry Temple (Rev War vet) b c1727 Prince George Co, VA. wf Elisa or Elizabeth d 1799. Descendant possible grandson Henry Temple, b NC, c1790-1800. who lived in Henderson Co, TN, after 1830, then in 1840 in Perry Co, TN. There with him in 1840 was Temple Smith b 1816 NC. ... In 1846 Jake Smith recd joint land grant with Andrew Temple in Perry (later Decatur) Co. ______________ The Smith/Temple connection really caught my attention, as my William Temple m Jane Smith, but I have never found Jane's parents let alone a connection. I didnt' want to plaster their names and addresses across the internet, so if anyone would be interested in trying to write them let me know. Joanne

    3. Hello everyone, The wedding is over and the fog has lifted. So, back to the research... Major Temple was in Greene Co, TN by 1783, but as you can see Burel (various spellings) came into TN early also; he is probably the one showing up in the 1850 census.
