In constructing it, I made the leap of faith that Some Temple Pedigrees, p. 266, meant that the children were born in Westmoreland co. Joanne is probably correct, and my page is in error. This has been fixed in my off-line database, and will be cofrrected in a future upload. Hope this didn't cause too much problem. Thanks for pointing it out. 3. and group....a n era I history where I feel "most at home and part of" Have done a minimum of research om medieval times and also early Eng. in particular. I have as far as the line goes in descendancy what joanne has..I have read many such accts re:Godiva Godifu..most allege to tale as just that.. I be;eive in tales as being a great starting point. They don,t "come from nowhere"... I have found many mentions of Leofric as great and caring ruler. One book I have not been able to find..."FLORES HISTOREAUM" by Roger of Wentover ; supposedly earliest account of tradition. The "Tradition" is either attractive as a tale or has some real basis as is part of Coventry Fair festival in Coventry! Think I,ll check with my Birmingham and Midland Soc. in England. Interested in others opinions! CHigg

    1. Leofric, Earl of Mercia
    2. jmay
    3. Since it has be very quiet on the list, thought I would take this time to open discussion on Leofric, Earl of Mercia. Before I go any farther, let me say up front, that this is NOT an endorsement of the belief that the Temples descend from Leofric. Indeed, if asked, I would say that this belief is sorely lacking in proof. Yet, at the same time, this is an era in history of great interest to me. So, let’s open a friendly and hopefully, beneficial debate on this subject. Maybe you can change my mind :-) The accuracy of the Leofric’s lineage is something that I can’t determine, as I have found only one very ancient book showing the lineage. And it has been my experience in looking at books showing Royal or Noble descent they can vary greatly - especially the early history. So, this is what I have on Leofric’s line of descent: Leofric, Leuricus comes Leycestriae ?716-757? (Comes is a Count). issue: Aelfgar I comes, d 810? issue: Aelfgar II comes, d 851? issue: Leofric II Dugd. Mon. (I have no idea what the initials stand for) issue: 1. Leofwine 2. Leofric III Leofwine, son of Leofric II had issue: 1. Leofric, Earl of Leicester c 1023, Earl of Mercia c1026, d 3 Aug 1057 m Godgifu, Lady Godiva of Coventry, sister of Thorold of Bukenhale. 2. Eadwine d 1039 battle against the Welsh at Rhydy-Groes 3. Godwine (had Aethelwine d c 1014) 4. Northman (Norman), d 1017 in London Leofric, Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva had: Aelfgar, Earl of East Angles c1053, Earl of Mercia c1057 m Aelfgifu Alveva. Issue: 1. Eadwine (Edwin), Earl of Mecia d c1072 2. Morkere (Morcar), Earl Northumberland alive in 1087 3. Burhhead Burchardus 4. Ealdgyth m1 Gruffydd Griffin, King of Wales (d 1063) m2 Harold II (d 1066) - no issue. With King Gruffydd she had Nest 5. Lucia m Ivo Tallebois And that is all I could find on Leofric’s genealogy. Leofric is historical recorded as being a man of moderation and reason. "Not that the forbearance of Leofric, the 'dear ruler' should be judged outside the context of his time. According to Florence of Worcester, he crushed a revolt in Worcestershire with such savagery that the shire town was depopulated..." The Making of The King 1066 by Alan Lloyd "In the year following this peace Earl Leofric died, to the grief of all men ‘for he was very wise for God and also for the world, which was a blessing to this nation" A History of England Before the Norman Conquest by Sir Charles Oman Some other resources that I would recommend on England’s early history: Edward the Confessor by Frank Barlow The Normans and the Norman Conquest by R. Allen Brown The Age of Arthur - A History of the British Isles from 350-650 by John Morris The passages I find most intriguing are from Edward the Confessor: "... and Earl Leofric was a member of an old and distinguished Mercian family" speaking of Leofric..." He was married to an Englishwoman, Godgifu or Godiva, and, although no English patriot, was a man of honour, religion, and loyal." So, let’s jump to the Kingdom of Mercia (The Marchland) "The Mercians are described by Bede as being divided into two subtribes - the North and South Mercians - by the river Trent; but there is little reason to think that there were ever two distinct kingdoms among them." footnote: The only reason for thinking of such a possibility is the mention by Bede of a Cearl king of the Mercians who does not appear in the royal genealogy. " A History of England Before the Norman Conquest "The Mercians. South of the Trent the kings who followed Penda built a powerfull monarchy, which retained its supremacy into the 9th century." The Age of Arthur - A History of the British Isles from 350-650 I could list the Kings of Mercia, but there would be little point since we don't know how or even if Leofric's family fits into them. I will stop here and open the floor to discussion and/or debate... Joanne

    3. Carol & Temple-List, I was just reading yesterday a computer magazine that talked about the history of the internet. Netscape Navigator 2.0 was the first browser to have java-capability. That browser was out in 1996. Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 which came out in 1996 was java capable. And the newest browser versions of Navigator 4.0 & Explorer 4.0 are still java capable. So I really don't understand why anyone has had any trouble with my original weekly Java chat. I can only guess it was because maybe they had AOL browsers which are not java capable. I think I read somewhere that AOL browsers are not java capable, and I guess the only why to make them java capable is to do a special download for it from them like you recently did. I would have thought that AOL would be similiar to Navigator & Explorer, where java capability is a standard feature in their browser, but I guess that's not the case. Anyway, those with AOL browsers means they can take part in the AOL chat, which is great. The whole point in me creating the Temple chat at my site was so non-AOL members would have somewhere to engage in a Temple chat. So any non-AOL member had that oppurtunity with my Parachat java Temple chat on Fridays. And they still have that oppurtunity with my Parachat java Temple chat on the 10th of every month. So they can't complain about not being non-AOL members any more! And now with my non-java Temple chat on the Geocities Heartland neighborhood chat page, which I'll create every month on the 20th at 8 PM Eastern, now even the AOL members whose browsers are not java-capable can come and chat with non-AOL Temple researchers. If me trying to have two chats turns out to be too much I can always cancel one. Having my Parachat java chat allows all the non-AOL Temple researchers to chat with each other. You having the AOL Great Temple chat allows all the AOL members to chat with each other. But the AOL members can't come to chat with the non-AOL members in my Parachat java Temple chat without upgrading their AOL browsers. That's why I decided to try the Geocities chat, which allows one to chat either by java or html. This is the only way for the AOL members who don't have a java capable browser on their computer to come chat with the non-AOL Temple resaearchers. But in order to chat in the Geocities chat rooms, everyone who wants to chat there must be a Geocities member, so if everyone signs up we could all just meet there and I could later cancel my Parachat java Temple chat if everyone does that. Will see how it goes. Geocities membership is free, so everyone might as well sign up. Also, AOL members can always upgrade their browser. There's lots of sights on the internet with java, its something everyone should have. Also, I have both Navigator and Explorer on my computer, and I think its a good idea that everyone has more than one browser on their computer. Pages on the internet look different in the different browsers, and you miss a lot when you come to a site designed for just one browser and not the other. So I would encourage everyone to have two browsers on their computers. If anyone reading this knows of a html powered chat I could place on my page to replace the java chat for free then please tell me about it, so then everyone could just come to my page and chat and not have to worry about java or geocities membership or anything. Also I think the fact that I've changed the meeting away from every Friday will probably help the most. That seemed to be what the most complaints were about, not that they had trouble getting there because of java but because it was on a Friday night and they wanted to do other things than chat on a Friday night. And once a week seemed to be too much chatting than they really wanted to engage in, so now that its once a month for each (in my case, on the 10th in Parachat java & on the 20th in Geocities java or html) I've cut down the number of meetings from 4 times a week to twice a week which should create a larger turn out for the less frequent meetings. If anyone has anymore ideas how we AOL & non-AOL members can get together to chat let me know. You can even post your ideas to the list. I would like very much to get both groups of Temple researchers into the same or an alternate chat with none or the least amount of trouble for anyone. If I lived in an AOL local calling service area I would certainly be an AOL member so I could take part in your AOL Temple chats. I hope together with all of us looking we can find somewhere on the internet an html operated free chat with no membership required we can all show up at to chat. William J.
