Hello, The evidence about Richard Taylor and his wife Dorothy is different than what was recently posted. No references or sources were included. The IGI is not to be believed except when you find that the information is an "extract from a parish record." Most of the IGI is from people providing what they think---without any documentation. Here is what the documented sources show for Richard Taylor: Descendants of Richard Taylor 1. RICHARD2 TAYLOR (RICHARD1) was born c 1631 in prob VA, and died Bet. 1665 - Apr 1673 in Charles City Co VA. He married SARAH BARKER c 1656 in Charles City Co VA, daughter of WILLIAM BARKER and FRANCES WARD. She was born c 1636 in England, and died Bef. Feb 04, 1693/94 in Charles City Co VA. Notes for RICHARD TAYLOR: Richard Taylor was probably born in the colony of VA because his father was included in the 1624 muster of inhabitants. About 1656, Richard married Sarah Barker, a daughter of William Barker and Frances Ward. Richard and Sarah had 5 known children, one son and 4 daughters. Below will be the description of a document which establishes that Sarah was a Barker. Beginning in 1659, Richard left the following records in Charles City Co VA. Aug 3 1659 Richard was ordered by the Court to pay Mr. Warham Hrosmonden 659 lb tobacco (Fleet, 219) Sep 10 1659 William Lea was ordered to pay Taylor 350 lb tobo (Fleet, 222) Jan 2 1659/60 Taylor served on a jury (Fleet, 227) Feb 3 1659/60 Taylor and James Ward were assigned by the court to settle a dispute (Fleet, 228); Taylor served on a jury (Fleet, 227) Oct 3 1660 Taylor was witness to a transaction between John Tippett and James Ward Aug 3 1661 Taylor served on a jury (Fleet, 252) Apr 21 1662 Taylor bought land from Richard Pace, see description below (Fleet, 260) Feb 3 1662/3 Taylor won a judgement from Rice Hoe for 755 lb tobo (Fleet, 267); Taylor was a witness for a deed between Thomas Crooke and William Tomlinson Apr 20 1663 Taylor served as the jury foreman (Fleet, 276) Jun 3 1664 Taylor's adjoining land mentioned in a deed between James Wallace and Caesar Walpole (Fleet, 299); Taylor also witnessed the deed. Aug 3 1664 Taylor served on a jury (Fleet, 304) Jun 3 1665 Taylor's adjoining land on Powell's Creek was mentioned (Fleet, 324) Aug 3 1665 Taylor's mill mentioned in a depostion (see more below) (Fleet, 325) In April 1662, Richard bought land from Richard and Mary Pace on "Powell's Creek, beginning at Buckland Island so up the creek to the road commonly called the Hawksnest and so butting upon the reedy bottom as far as William Wilkin's plantation" for L300. Witnesses, Caesar Walpole, John Hobbs, John Floriday, and John Daniell; recorded June 10 1662. (Fleet, 260) At the April 12 1664 Court, "Richard Taylor of Flowerdieu Hundred, com civitat carol fabr lign" [fabricator of wood, ie carpenter] to Mrs. Frances Letherland, of the same, widow, to protect her from any claims or inheritance to be had and made for Sarah, John, and elizabeth the children of sd Frances by her first husband Mr. William Barker decd. Bond for tobacco, and further if John Barker shall and will at his full and perfect age by Law to manage his owne estate sign and deliver to the sd Frances and her husband certain properties, for life, at Flowerdieu Hundred, particularly one plantation, excepting the sd John Barkers and the sd Taylors particular owne plantation and the plantations already lett out by leases. The sd Frances her sd intended husband is meaned Lt. Coll. Tho. Drew to whom only civility of John Barker is purposed." This recorded was signed by Richard Taylor, and witnessed by Hoel Pryse and John Barker; recorded Apr 26 1664. (Fleet, 296) At the Aug 3 1665 Court, George Woodleife stated that he had left 3 bushels of corn in two bags at Taylor's mill which were stolen. Taylor informed Woodleife that no allowance would be made for the stolen goods, "Mr Taylor who answered he could not nor he would not allow it, but if he [Woodleife] sued him [Taylor] and recovered it, then the said Taylor answered he would sett up at the Court door and that if any brought any corne to the mill to be ground , then they should either runne the hazard [of it being stolen] or else stay [during] the grinding of it." (Fleet, 325) Inspite of Taylor's stance, the Court ordered Mrs. Sarah Taylor, "attorney of Mr. Richard Taylor" to deliver to William Evans 3 bushels of good Indian corn in two bags or the value of it. (Fleet, 325) This should not be interpreted that Mrs. Taylor was an attorney, but that she was appearing on behalf of her husband who may have been ill or unable to appear in court. Richard Taylor died between Aug 1665 and Apr 1673. Since Richard had been leaving regular records in the court until 1665, it is reasonable to assume that he died closer to 1665 than 1673. In any case, all of his children would have been underage. By Apr 1673, his widow Sarah had married Robert Lucy. At the Apr 3 1673 Court, "Robert Lucy and Sarah his wife and Phillip Limbrey and Elizabeth his wife jointly own 1000 acres in Flower du Hundred, inherited from John Barker deceased, brother to sd Sarah and Elizabeth, [and they] desire partition. Request that Col. Robert Wynne for the Lucys and Lt. Col. Geo Jordan for the Limbreys meet James Minge surveyor on the 22nd instant and divide the land." (Fleet, 347) Capt. Robert Lucy, who was the sheriff for Charles City County, died about 1688. By Oct 1690, Sarah had married Capt. James Bisse. By this time, her Taylor children were all grown. It is not known if she had children with Robert Lucy, but she would not have had any children with Capt. Bisse. Since Richard's only son John Taylor had only daughters, the Taylor surname died out in this line. References Boddie, John B. VA Historical Genealogies. p 150-153. Davis, Virginal. FRANCES TAYLOR, b. c 1665, Charles City Co VA. Generation No. 2 2. JOHN3 TAYLOR (RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born c 1661 in Charles City Co VA, and died c Oct 1709 in Prince George Co VA. He married HENRIETTA MARIA UNKNOWN c 1683 in Charles City Co VA. She was born c 1663, and died Aft. Jul 1718 in VA. Notes for JOHN TAYLOR: John Taylor was probably born in Charles City Co VA. About 1683, he married Henrietta Maria (surname unknown). Evidence indicates that they had only 4 daughters. Taylor served as a burgess for Charles City Co for the sessions of 1696-1697, 1698, 1700-1702; he served as clerk of the court in 1699; he served as a captain in the militia. (VA Bio, 337) Taylor died about 1709. Abstract of will: I, John Taylor of Prince George County; to daughter Elizabeth Duke, two negroes, one called Dick and one called Buck, my riding horse called Trooper besides what I have already given her; to my daughter Henrietta Maria Taylor, 4 negores viz Hector, Moll, Caesor, and Frank, one feather bed and furniture, 6 young cows and calves, all to be paid her at 21 years of age or day of marriage which shall happen first; to daughter Sarah Taylor, 4 negores or mulattoes viz Henry, George [parts torn] to be paid to her at 21 years [parts torn] lying and being in Prince George County; all the rest of my goods etc to my dear and loving wife Henrietta Maria Taylor, as also 5 negroes viz Antilope and his wife Amy, Jack and his wife Sue and Hannah and all my land at Pigeon Swamp I give to my loving wife to her and her heirs, she paying all my just debts and funeral charges; executors loving wife Henrietta Maria Taylor and my dear daughter Elizabeth Duke; signed John Taylor; witnesses Robert Rogers, Michael Talbott, Sarah Bradford, Sarah Proudlove. (Morris, 48-50; Prince George Co VA records) On the back of the will is an additional comment that Frances Taylor was to be given certain property and Elizabeth Duke 1000 acres of land at Blackwater, "being formerly the land of his brother Richard Taylor." (Morris, 50) Widow Henrietta married Randle (Randall) Platt. At the August 13 1717 Prince George County Court, "Randall Platt and Heniretta his wife, executrix of the will of John Taylor deceased," were sued by Francis Willis for a debt dated Nov 1701 through Mar 1704. (VGSQ, Vol 22) Platt served as a county justice and sheriff in Prince George County. In July 1718, the court granted an attachment by Platt against the estate of Henry Duke (who died in 1718). In Dec 1718, Randle Platt, Mr. Greenhill, and Elizabeth Duke (widow of Henry Duke deceased), settled the estate of Henry Duke. Duke did not leave a will, but the widow was given administration of the estate. Elizabeth Duke presented an inventory and appraisal of the estate on Jan 22 1719. Henrietta probably died by 1723 because her Taylor daughters and their husbands sold land in Surry Co VA to John Mason. The sale was mentioned in a land patent by John Mason: "John Mason, Gentleman, 223 acres part of the aforesaid tract formerly sold to said John Mason by John Hardiman and Henrietta Maria his wife, Francis Hardiman & Sarah his wife, Elizabeth Duke [widow] and Frances Greenhill [widow] by deed dated Dec 18 1723." Here is a referenced narrative of Simon Taylor and his family: Happy Holidays! Ann Blomquist Orlando, FL Descendants of Simon Taylor 1. SIMON2 TAYLOR (RICHARD1) was born c 1669 in Rappahannock Co VA, and died Jan 10, 1728/29 in Richmond Co VA. He married ELIZABETH LEWIS c 1691 in Rappahannock Co VA, daughter of EDWARD LEWIS. She was born Mar 08, 1673/74 in VA, and died Oct 07, 1727 in Richmond Co VA. Notes for SIMON TAYLOR: Simon Taylor was born about 1669 in early colonial Virginia. His father died in 1679 and his mother about 1687, leaving him an orphan about age 18, underage but close to his majority. At the March 1687/8 Court in Rappahannock County, Simon chose his brother-in-law William Glen as his guardian. (Rapp Co Bk 2 p 74) About 1691 at age 22, he married Elizabeth Lewis, probably in Rappahannock County. They had 8 known children. On Aug 21 1691, Simon and Elizabeth were part of a deed which sold 390 acres in Richmond and Northumberland counties to Edward Lewis and William Morgan. The other grantors were Elizabeth's siblings. (Richmond Co Deed Bk 6, p 115) In 1692, Richmond Co was formed when Rappahannock County was dissolved. Records for the family will be found in Richmond Co after this date. In July 1703, Simon was owed 47 pounds of tobacco from the estate of William Brockenbrough. (Fleet, 280) The 1704 quit rents of Virginia do not include Richmond County, so Simon's total taxable acreage at that time is not known. (Smith) Probably by 1704, Simon's older brother Richard had died. At that time, Simon's nephew John Glen selected his uncle Simon Taylor as his guardian. If Glen's older uncle Richard had been living, it would be more likely that Glen would have chosen him. So, it may be assumed that Richard had died or left the area by 1704. There should be some record in Rappahannock County or early Richmond County for the clear title of the land jointly inherited by Richard and Simon from their father. Either Simon owned the 200 acres or he had sold it. Unfortunately, Simon's tracts are not clearly identified in his will. In Feb 1708, Simon Taylor was recorded as owing the estate of Thomas Woodyate the amount of 44 pounds of tobacco which was worth 5 shillings 7 pence. (Fleet, 296) In June 1712, Symon Taylor was a member of a jury which settled a boundary line for Rawleigh Travers. (Fleet, 302) About Feb 1713, Simon was paid the 47 pounds of tobacco owed to him by the Brockenbrough estate. (Fleet, 303) Simon and Elizabeth suffered the loss of two of their sons: Richard died in Jan 1716 about age 20 and Simon died in Feb 1718 about age 18. (King) Wife Elizabeth died in late 1727 at age 53. (King, 182) Simon Taylor died on Jan 10 1728/9 in Richmond County VA about age 59. (King, 182) Abstract of Simon's will, Parish of North Farnham, Richmond Co VA, dated Aug 18 1728, proven Feb 5 1728/9. To son John Taylor this plantation whereon I now live with half the land to it (if no heirs, then to my son George Taylor); to son William Taylor, the old plantation from whence I lately removed with the other half of the aforesaid land (if no heirs, then to my son Thomas Taylor); to son Septimus Taylor, that plantation whereon Patrick Doran now lives and all the land formerly belonging to it which I bought with it (if no heirs, then to son George Taylor); to my daughter Sarah Jasper, 1000 lb tobacco; to my granddaughter Elizabeth Jasper, 1 year old heifer; to son John Taylor, the feather bed I commonly lie on together with the furniture belonging to it; to son William Taylor, that feather bed and furniture in the old house; next two best feather beds to sons Thomas and Septimus Taylor; to my 4 sons last named, 4 iron pots; to son George Taylor, my negro woman Toney; sons William and Septimus Taylor, executors with sons Thomas and George as overseers of the will; residue between the 5 sons. Witnesses Robert Burton, Mary Shurlock, John Hammond. (Casey, 123; Richmond Co Will Bk 5 p 126-127) Sons John, William, and Septimus should have each inherited land. Son Thomas died just a year after his father. (King, 182) There is no evidence for the son that I have placed as born about 1707. However, I have placed that son there because of the name of the next son, Septimus. The name Septimus means seventh. Rather than indicating that Septimus was the seventh child, I think that name more likely means the seventh son. References Casey, Albert E. Southern Taylor Families 1607-1830, 1958. Fleet, Beverley.
