Today I received the pension file for a William Taylor who fought in the civil war for the Union Army. I was hoping this was my William Taylor, but it is not. If anyone is researching an African-American William (Clinton) Taylor who was from Natchez, Miss. and who had a wife named Laura, please let me know and I would be happy to ship this file to you. All I ask is the reimbursement of my cost of the file, which came from the National Archives. The cost of the file was $37. It is a very large volume of documents, and the mailing cost is $10. Part of the file is a deposition from Laura Taylor dated June 26, 1896. She states in the deposition that she is 64 years old and is a house servant living on Pine Street near Minorville with her daughter, Mary Young. She is the widow of William Taylor who served in the Union Army in Company B, Heavy Artillery (6 U.S.C. H.A.) commanded by Col. Farrar. She states that William Taylor had belonged to Adam Bingman, whose plantation was three miles from town on the Kingston Road. She also states that William Taylor told her he was born in Louisville, KY. Another document in the file says William Taylor's true name was Clinton Taylor, but was changed by the Army for some reason to William. If anyone is interested in this file, please let me know.
