    3. Hi I am descended from John Taylor and his wife Elizabeth (nee Beattie). They were married on 15 Nov 1883, by licence, in the Register Office of Wigton, Cumberland. Can anyone tell me if these licences are available for checking. John did not listed his parentage and died in 1890. There are too many John Taylor's of suitable age to pinpoint this man on the 1881 census. Can anyone help me please? Regards Dee West Ipswich, Australia.

    3. Well You know the place and the date, find the reference - Folio / Date Then contact the registry office in Cumberland (via the internet) and then (The Bad Part) Pay a fee of usually £7 (but that’s my local registry office) and they will send you a copy, with full address and as much information as the original wedding certificate. From 1837 (Queen Victoria) all Births Marriages and Deaths had to be registered in civil law, irrespective of Church services.
