Gareth; As you probably know, before the 13th & 14th centuries, there were no surnames. When they started to become necessary, people tokk surnames as what they looked like, where they lived, or what they did for a living. There were tailors who made clothes, and tailor also meant smith, as blacksmith, arrowsmith, tinsmith etc and as there were many trades in each village many Taylors got their names from that. but the noble and royal Taylors came from Normandy as Taileurs (sic) That's why there are so MANY TAYLORS!!! When I was in school Taylor was the 12th most common name in the English speaking world behind Black, Brown, white, hill, bridge etc. It has now dropped to 16th or so. BUT THERE ARE STILL TOO MANY!!!! It makes genealogy very difficult! Our history tells us when England won a war with Ireland and won Ulster, there was also a civil war in England between England and Scotland and England won! The losers were given the choice of the headsman's axe or going to ireland to hold down the Catholics, many of the exiles were presbyterians and methodists(My family) IF ANY OF YOU CAN ADD TO OR CORRECT THIS, PLEASE DO!!! I belong to the Elliott clan in Scotland, but have connections to about half the Scottish Clans and septs thru my ancestors; Taylor, Vickers, Gordon, Blackburn, Barnard,Osburn, Mc Raven, Lackey;Robinson, Bagley;Sanders, Mabry,Maxwell, Clinton, etc. The taylors and Elliotts share a homeland on the England-Scotland border hence the name "Borderers" they were Reivers,(smugglers, rustlers etc) Earl H Taylor [email protected] (909)593 2652 yahoo IM eht2060 http://www.keyway.net/~eht2060/ -----Original Message----- From: Gareth Taylor [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 04, 2004 4:29 PM To: 'Earl Taylor' Subject: RE: Taylor ancestry; Dear Earl, I am sorry, but you are confusing me totally. 1066 was a tremendously busy year for us here in England, as well as the rest of Europe. William the Bastard was the son of Duke of Normandy and the daughter of a local Tanner - hence the name that all true born Saxons have called him ever since (1058 was the first use of the term in France) As for your Irish Ancestry. Taylor was a generic professional name as you well know. If the link is Scottish to Ireland this would be because of the following (this is my synopsis only) because of the Borders Marches - the 6 counties along the England / Scotland border and the terrible banditry that happened along the border in all directions. The Wild Wild West was nothing compared to this. In 1600 James IV of Scotland (Who became James I of England and ruled the two kingdoms together). King James needed to make the kingdoms work together so had to remove the border raiders and make trade between the two kingdoms nice and easy - without losing 90% in theft going between the two countries. Many families were outlawed (including part of my own, the Grahams), they had to flee to Ireland or Holland to save their lives or change their names. (Out of interest the worst were - Johnson, Nixon, Armstrong and Graham - which forgive me also have a strong connection with America.) - Lyndon Johnson - Richard Nixon - Billy Graham - Neil Armstrong - well I am sure they knew with Richard Nixon that he was a Border Bandit! So In short the Scottish bandits had to hide out - some came back as other names to parts of the UK, others changed their names, As far as I know the Border countries did not have a prominent Taylor Family. I suggest a good book - ' The Steel Bonnets ' by George MacDonald Fraser - in this book he describes the epic banditry of the Borders and the families involved - Note no Taylor's though. As for the Name Taylor - the Family does have current Royal Links to the British Royal Family, ' The House of Windsor ' with Lady Helen Taylor who is Twelfth inline I think to the British throne. I will do a quick search in Ireland for you, but I do not understand all the links you throw at me. Today I spent the day in Lincolnshire with the Taylor's of Lincolnshire. I have managed to get back to 1814 with a John and Mary Taylor owning as public house in Great Hale (either the 'Nags Head' or the 'Rose and Crown' ) I enjoyed visiting the places and trying to find the old pubs and building s which have all changed over the years. I then went to Sutterton to find the farm where their son George Farmed and my Great Grandfather was born. I found the Church where he was baptized but that was all unfortunately. even the churchyard only had 3 Taylor's and then only from 1914. Looking for family history is hard, but enjoyable. do you have all you tree published on a website. It might be easier for people to see the links if there was a larger overview? Roland Elliott is a very distant cousin thru my mother Neva Elliott, Ed Barnard is a very distant cousin thru the Barnards, Pat is a distant cousin thru the Taylors, Barnards, and van Bibbers. Jeb Taylor and I share DNA but don't know where the connection is. Was William the Conqueror also William the Bastard? I didn't know that, if true. Baron Tailieure(sic) was right hand man for William. He was killed at Battle of Hastings and his brother became Baron and was progenitor of our Taylors. The Taylors I know for sure were from Antrim, Ulster, IRE. They came to America abt 1737 to Borden Tract, Orange/Augusta co. VA. We have a family legend that we are Scots-Irish and related to President Zachary Taylor, but I have no proof or connections except the DNA test which is identical with that of Jeb Stuart Taylor in VA but he is not sure of all his ancestry either. The line of Taylors which include Zachary came to America ca 1620 from Carlisle, England, to James River area, VA mine came from IRE abt 1737. to the same place, but 120 yrs later. I don't know when the line was sent from England/Scotland to Ulster or how long they were there. I am told there is a prominent Taylor family in Antrim today, but don't know if there is a connection. I have paid Irish searchers to try to find out but they drew a blank. I don't think they tried, I think it was a scam!! They cashed my checks but told me NOTHING!! Dear Earl Sorry just in to find 80 odd emails from you and others about Taylor. The surname thing is not quite right. Family Names have been in the Uk since at least 53 AD when the Romans invaded and the Indigenous population too on Roman mannerisms - such as family names. Although some people did not have family names, many chose to take on descriptive as the family name was no longer relevant or appropriate - as they though everyone knew everyone else's family. The Christian Church was very big on this - especially because of the accidental Brother Marrying Sister type of accident that may have occurred. Anyway - I will run through the emails a little more carefully.
