    3. A word of caution on dna testing for Native ancestry. The Y-dna test traces the father to son male line only, so if there was say a Native grandmother, there would be no evidence in the Y-dna test since the Y chromosone is passed male to male only. In the mtdna test, it traces the female line. So, unless I missunderstand it traces the bottom line of your pedigree while the Y test traces the top line. Think of all of the other lines that go undetected by theses tests. Then, there is a test that looks at many genetic markers to test for ethnicity. It is done by Ancestry by dna.( ancestrybydna.com ) The problem with this test is that it is very innacurate because each child inherits a different set of genes from their parents genes. So, you could test ten children from the same set of parents and each could show a different result. I have evidence of a Native 12th great grandmother and took this test. The graph that came with the results showed a slight spike in the area of Native ancestry, but they classified me as 100% European because the amount of Native ancestry was less than 1% of my genetic makeup. Think about your pedigree, with each generation the number of ancestors doubles in that generation. So, how many generations would you have to go back to the point where your Native ancestry would be less than 1% ? If you have traced your pedigree back that far and haven't found any Natives, they would not show in this dna test. Don't waste your money unless you suspect one of your grandparents or 1st or 2nd great grandparents was 100% Native. Don Taylor There is a DNA a test for Native American Ancestry.
