    1. Scottish Tartans
    2. Gareth Taylor
    3. The name appears numerous times in records from the 13th century and comes from the craft of tailoring. The Latin version in Cissor, and people of the name of Cissor or Scissor are recorded in the 14th and 15th centuries. Thanks to James Pringle Weavers for the following information TAYLOR: This name is, not surprisingly, derived from the occupation of a cutter of cloth and is very common throughout Britain and abroad. It first appears in old Scots records c.1276 and the occurrence of the name Cissor/Scissor in some records has been equated with the trade and name. The word 'tailor' passed into Gaelic as 'taillear', and gave rise to the Highland surname, Mac-an-taillear, 'son of the tailor'. Alexander and John McKyntalyhur were declared rebels in 1392 for their part in a raid on Angus and the murder of Sir Walter Ogilvy. Until the end of the 18th century several families in Cowal named Mac-an-taillear regarded themselves as a branch of Clan Cameron and called themselves 'Clann an Taillear Duibh Chamronach'. Traditionally, the Taylors who are considered a sept of Clan Cameron claim to be descendants of a 16th century warrior named Taillear dubh na Tuaighe, 'The Black Taylor of the Axe', a natural son of the 14th Chief of Lochiel, who was renowned for his skill with the Lochaber Axe. There is a tradition amongst the MacLachlans of Cowal that their kinsmen in Lochaber gave refuge to the mighty axe-man and that he in fact died in Cowal. In most instances the name will have originated from the craft of tailoring, and therefore a direct genealogical trace would be required to establish a clan connection. Those who consider themselves members of Clan Cameron may wear any of the accepted Cameron tartans with the exception of the chief's personal sett, the red Cameron of Lochiel. There is distinct Taylor tartan designed in 1955 by Lt.Col. Iain.B. Cameron Taylor, its most prominent feature of which is the double black lines, said to represent the Black Taylor. There is also a marked similarity to the Hunting Cameron pattern. The Camerons have a long and proud heritage in Lochaber and that clan itself was made up from several native families, the MacMartins of Letterfinlay, the MacGillonies of Strone, and others, all of whom projected the history of the race back into the mists of antiquity. Their chiefs were the epitomy of their class and were staunch supporters of the Jacobite cause.

    3. Hi Just though I would add to the mix of things to look for when looking for ancestors. Britain is supreme in Taxation - a world super power in this alone. Therefore I thought I would check the Lay Subsidy Rolls for Good King Richard for the last known village where my Taylor ancestors came from. Great Hale (Hale Magna) in Lincolnshire - and guess what, I found a Hugh Tayliour having to pay out 2s 1d (25 pence) so not the richest in the village, but still a large sum when you consider the daily wage would have been 2d for a skilled worker. Anyway - most interesting and very difficult to prove any direct connection but the village would have had about 350-400 people in it at this time (Around 1322 - 1338). http://www.le.ac.uk/elh/pot/lincs/gthale.html Gareth Taylor North Yorkshire

    3. I am looking for information on my great, great grandmother. She was Nancy Reed Taylor Tate. She was born December 4 1807 VA and died January 31, 1870 Van Zandt Co., TX. Her father was Ezekiel Taylor of which I have no further information. Her siblings were Lucinda who married Elijah Overton; Susanna who married John Whaley; Robert; Susannah who married Tinsley Chewing; and George who married Emaline D. Nancy Reed Taylor was the wife of John Tate. They lived in Hardaman Co., TN until 1850 when they removed to Texas. At least some of her siblings were known to have been married in Harman Co., TN. Any help will be appreciated

I went to Meriwether County a couple of years ago trying to find out something. I know there must have been other children because they all had big families back then. John N. Taylor was born 1835. My great-grandmother was his daughter, she was born 1869. Jan

There were three brothers, sons of my great grandfather, Cornelius Taylor, and step brothers of my great grandfather, who settled in Ark - White Co. and Monroe Cos.- before 1850. One was Isaac Taylor, born probably in VA in 1807, who died before 1850. He married either in Ky or Ark, Eliza J., and had at least two children Antenette and Harry H. Taylor. I only know of these two children because they are listed in the 1850 census for Monroe Co. in the family of the second husband of Eliza J. Taylor, Thomas Clark. We have information on what happened to Antinette Taylor, but Harry is a mystery, born about 1843 according to this census. The second son is George W. Taylor, born in Hamilton Co., Ohio, in 1811. As far as I know he had no children. According to his will he married Mary Benton. No children are named as such in his will, but he names Isaac Taylor and his heirs. What is strange is that he would have known that his brother Isaac was dead at the time he made the will. Also, the other names given are another brother, Isreal, and a sister, Eliza Jane Fail. The last son is Samuel Taylor, born in Ill. in 1815, who was a steamboat captain on the White and other rivers. He married Mary, born in Tenn. Only two daughters are listed in the 1870 census: Millie and Mary S. In his will made in 1869, and proved in 1872, besides his wife, he only mentions Millie. Looking at this information, I wonder if the Isaac Taylor named in George Taylor's will was another son of Isaac and Eliza Jane. However, the dates you give may not support this question with regard to your Taylor family. I will appreciate any comments you may have. 3. Note to Taylor's with roots in Virginia, try Contacting Cecil Robert Taylor at [email protected] or (434) 248-5754 for any information regarding any of the Taylor Lines with roots in Virginia. Cecil has been publishing a quarterly newsletter for about twenty years that researches all the Taylor and Fore families that have roots in Virginia, - and most do. He is my Uncle and has been a great deal of help to me. The problem with our direct family line is that it runs into a brick wall about 1700 with John Taylor and William Taylor in Henrico, Goochland, and Cumberland counties. John was married to Avis, last name unknown, and William was married to Mary Hughes. Finding the parents of John and William Taylor has been a brick wall for many researchers. Should anyone be able to shed any light on the ancestry of John and William could you please let know. By the way, Uncle Cecil uses primary documents for the genealogy references in his newsletter. I'm not sure, but he may also do local research on limited bases, but you will have to talk to him about that. I hope this helps someone, and I hope someone can help me. John
