More Wisconsin stories -- My grandfather, Logan Shockey, also moved from Kentucky (Wolfe Co.) to Wisconsin. After his marriage he settled in Florence County, which is northeast of Forest County. He lived near Long Lake and Tipler. A number of other Kentucky families from Breathitt Co. also settled in the Long Lake area in Florence Co. This northern area of Wisconsin is heavily wooded and is not particularly good as farm land. I believe Logan also lived for a while nearer to Crandon in Forest Co. I understand that the train connected Kentucky to this part of Wisconsin and that many families traveled back and forth via the train. Logan Shockey was the son of Elias Shockey who married Julia Ann McQuinn. He married Bertha Evalee Roberts who was born in Breathitt Co. and moved to Wisconsin with her parents, James Monroe Roberts and Lilly Belle Gillum. Elias Shockey was the son of Allen Shockey and Matilda Birchfield. Matilda was the daughter of Adam Birchfield and Nancy Taulbee -- and so my connection to the Taulbee family. Sue Dexheimer
Thank you Sue, I was going to post it this morning that I had found another Kentucky Taulbee family that went to Wisconsin. 1930 Forest, Waheno, Wisconsin Logan Shockey 47 1882 Bertha E. 34 1895 Golden U. 10 1919 Ida M. 09 1920 Next Door another KY family Alex Roberts 49 Elizabeth 20 wife Do you know who the Alex Roberts was? They must grow a lot of potatoes up there, I can remember my stepfather's niece telling about doing day work digging or picking up potatoes. She married and moved to Letcher County or somewhere near there, didn't want to work in potatoes any more. It hasn't been but about 30 years since my stepfather visited his brother and went bear hunting, got one too. His other brother used to visit down here and bring grounded up bear meat. UGH! I thought Matilda Birchfield (dau of Adam and Nancy (Taulbee) Birchfield)married Wesley Sebastian and then Joseph Roberts. I have listed that Joseph Roberts had a brother Alexander Roberts. I must have my lines messed up... Linda
