Phyllis T. Maloney, 58 of Huber Heights, Ohio passed away May 13, 2002 at her residence. She as born Feb. 24, 1944 a daughter of Thelma Taulbee of Hazel Green, and the late Taylor Taulbee. Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Robert W. Maloney; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Kennith Webster; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Lisa Maloney; one sister and brother in law, J.D. & Gay Taulbee; 7 grandchildren, a host of friends, relatives, nieces and nephews. I have no ideal bout Jeremiah South. I found several Jerry Souths, but they were older. It seems that John South, had a son, Jeremiah Weldon South who married a Cockerill. He was called the "Father of Breathitt" and the "Keeper of the State Prison" in Frankfort, KY. He must have had a son Jerry, and there must have been more Jerry Souths, Martins, Greens, Johns etc. There were two Jere Souths one Jere South, Jr. married about the same time as our Jerry and Elizabeth. This one married a Hargis and was shot and killed. That family married into the Trimble family of Wolfe, South Trimble was one of this family. Jeremiah W. South was a timber man and had lots of interests in and around Breathitt and Frankfort. There was another Martin South who was shot and killed in Frankfort, too early for our Martin, but there was also a Martin South in our time frame, but not ours. A Jerry South did fight in the Civil War, not sure if it was the older Jeremiah W. South or his son, too many generations and too many Jerrys, to keep them straight. It seems from the "Land of Breathitt" "Behold he Cometh in the Clouds' and Dr. Wilgus Bach's info that the Souths were well respected. Carole

One of my distant Rose--well fairly distant--has tested as well a a couple more in the Rose family to see which Rose family we belong to. They all proved positive that they went back to John Rose (b. 1761-d. 1843--I think off the top of my head) and beyond to a Rose family in New England. There have to be so many "markers" as they call them, in the DNA that are alike for them to be related. Bess I will have to e-mail cousin Walter--or my cousin, Gail, and find out more about it. Crystal & Bess, The other day I happened upon a website that lists the names of the DNA thingy, but I accidentally clicked my way there and have no idea where to find it again. I sure would consider getting into the act if there were a DNA project for the Taulbee's. As far a family handing down information, I have found that the information is usually true. My great grandmother told my mother who her grandfather was and low and behold, I finally found a death certificate for one of my mother's aunts, not only did this man name himself as her father, he was the informant. I had looked for proof for 7 yrs and all that time it was out there in a death certificate! I realize that there were no death certificates for the time frame that Margaret died, but who knows, proof could be out there in another form. Maybe there's a will out there somewhere, Simon was a wealthy man according to the 1850 Breathitt Co census, $6000 in property, and he owned 94 slaves per the 1850 Breathitt Co slave schedule. Thanks, Louise, I am printing out most of the Taulbee information. I don't always have time to put them into my data base at the time, but I am trying to work on as much as I can. Bess

No, Cyrstal, I haven't heard of any DNA on the Taulbee line--although there may be some that I am unaware of. We have been doing some on our Rose line, and it seems to have narrowed some things down for us. At least pointed us in the correct direction. Bess

Hi Louise and Bess, I would like to jump in here, if I may. Margaret "Polly" is my ggggrandmother on both sides of my family. An aunt told me that the common knowledge was that Margaret "Polly" had Ira out of wedlock with Simon Cockrell. I am particularly interested in this line and wonder if anyone else has ever come across this information? After that she married John Dunn. My mother descends from the Taulbee side of this family and my father from the Dunn side so this is really important to me. In fact, just to throw this out, have any of you heard of any DNA testing on the Cockrell family and/or the Taulbee family? I would sure be interested in proving this one way or another.
