I thought some subscribers could find this website interesting for Tate cemeteries in Russell County, VA. In particular, descendents of Col. John Tate and Robert Tate may be interested. It's a great site. When I was first there a couple of years ago, you could keep blowing up maps bigger and bigger. There are a number of cemeteries in Russell County with these old Tates buried in them. Some are in better shape than other ones (unfortunately, I can't even read many of the headstones in the one which may have Robert Tate, my gggggg grandfather in it - it's above the family farm on the side Clinch Mountain. The cemetery is fenced, but all grown in, and it looks like kids drink there. The old log cabin (it would be Robert's I think) is below some siding. The family no longer owns the farm. It worries me that the cabin could get ripped down. Boy, I wish I had it. The other thing I'd love to do is go poking around for remnants of Tate's Fort (a job for a historical archeologist, though). I think it was probably located on Mocassin Ridge where Col. John Tate may have had his home - he's buried on Mocassin Ridge. All this is along Route 613, a little west of Abingdon, VA. http://www-nmd.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/GetDetail?tab=N&ID=1475487 Dave
