Have you extended your search into surrounding counties of Harrison and Clarke which Floyd used to be part of before 1819 and into Kentucky? Also have you checked church, cemetery and census records for any Tates in the surrounding area? My William Tate came to Huntington Co. IN from Vermont via OH and I can't find anything on him before OH. He worked on the Lackawanna Railroad. They are an elusive lot that didn't leave many clues. Hope this helps. Pam
I totally agree with what you said, on "who cares". Have you checked any of the Melungeon sites. That would be a good starting point. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Claire Ehrhart Abel" <lcabel@genesiscomics.com> To: <TATE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 18, 2000 12:09 PM Subject: Re: [TATE-L] E Bay picture-- REV Tate > I look white - but who knows what blood lines are in your background> until you look. I look white - but who knows what blood lines are in your background until you look. I have found that there are American Indian and Black on my father's side several generations back. I have been thinking that maybe one reason I may not be able to find any solid information on Julia Florance Tate is maybe she is a product of an owner/slave relationship??? The picture of her and her brother - they look white - but the brother has a beard that looks very curly - kinky ??? Her hair is pulled back - they are dressed very fancy. I don't know what I am looking for as far as 'race' background. I really don't care - it will not change me - The John William Roberts that Julia Florance Tate married was of Welsh descent and he had blue eyes and reddish brown hair from what I can find out. I have traced several generations back except for two women on my mother's side - Julia Florance Tate and Mary Ann Salladee - both were born around the same time - 1820 and 1823 - I can't find any birth records for either of them anyplace. All I have to go on are obit and family history - but as everyone knows - they could have made up their past in order to cover up an illegitimate birth or ???? Anyone have any suggestions??
In regard to the picture on E Bay- Unless you are looking for an African-American Tate family, I doubt that this picture would have fit into a family lineage .
Jackie - If you run into a Julia Florance Tate or Julia Franklin Tate Born in 1823 supposedly in New Albany, Ind which is on the Ohio river. I have been unable to find a record of her birth or exisitance prior to her marrying John William Roberts who was a riverboat captain. They are buried in New Albany near his parents - William Roberts who was born in 1788 in Lincoln Co., Ky and Sarah Childs born 1800 in Maryland. A family story surfaced 2 years ago claiming she was raised by a family named Peck, but I haven't found a trace of them either. I even have a picture of her and a brother - no name on the picture for the brother. Any thing would be helpful. I have been looking for several years and just hit brick walls all the time. There was a Rev.Tate - a picture of him for sale on ebay. I emailed the people with some questions and they never answered me - I don't know what era the man lived where and his age... Maybe someone else on the list would know. Claire Abel

I need some help please. I recently found an ancestors name listed in Passenger and Immigratin Lists Index a Guide to Published Arrival Records of Passengers who came to the U.S. It gives his name and year of arrival 1854 in Philadelphia. I understand that his records were once at the Court of Common Appeals. Now the question: How do I get his records from Philadelphia? would they still be in the Court of Common Appeals and if so where do I write and if not where do I write. Any help anyone can give me on obtaining his intent or naturalization records would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!! Lee Neilsen lloyi@ubtanet.com

Looking for information on Sarah TATE. She was born in KY - possibly the daughter of a James TATE, who may have been a doctor (not sure). Sarah was married 16 Sept 1824 in Jefferson CO, IN to Benjamin UNDERWOOD. I found a record on the Indiana State Library's genealogy division web site that listed a Benjamin UNDERWOOD marrying a Lucy TATE on 16 Sept 1824 in Jefferson CO, IN. Benjamin died 1865 in Nebraska, Jennings CO, Indiana. I have no death information for Sarah/Lucy, except that she isn't listed in the 1850 census with Benjamin & their son George. (He was born in late 1827.) Does anyone connect with this family? Marti asksuddarth@juno.com

I know this is not the Robert Tate you are speaking of, but found this obit and I feel that we tend to overlook the new England Tates. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ TATE A 4-page Portland, Maine newpaper dated May 14, 1822; PORTLAND GAZETTE which contains the following item: DIED At Westbrook on the 3d of April last, Mrs. Martha Tate, widow of the late Capt. Robert Tate, aged 71 years. - She was much endeared to her family, as a very tender and affectionate parent; and to her acquaintance, generally, as a social, sober, benevolent and discreet lady; whose example we hope will do good, though she is no more; and whose death we trust was the death of the righteous. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This came from the following URL: http://www.genbay.com/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: David Stewart <dstewart@sioux-lookout.lakeheadu.ca> To: TATE-L@rootsweb.com <TATE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, July 31, 2000 5:22 PM Subject: [TATE-L] John Tait 1744 >I agree that it's not likely to be the father of Robert and John born in >Augusta County. Like most people who are doing genealogy research, I prowl through cemeteries taking pictures of grave markers to remember names, dates, etc. Over the years I have acquired a nice pile of some very old markers. Usually I would scan them and send them to whom ever requested the information. Now I found a site that I can list person, scan the picture of the marker, scan a picture of the person and include a brief bio on them. It is free and simple to use. You can search this site by famous graves and non famous graves. Also by surname, state, county or cemetery. Even if you don't have a picture of the marker or person it is a great site to share info with others. ww.findagrave.com --
