Liberty is the county seat of Amite County. If you're in Oxford, Lafayette County ... then you are up at the northern in of the state while Amite County is close to the 'boot' of Louisiana. You can check online at www.mapquest.com for specific directions, but it's probably about 250 miles from you, I'm guessing. I was in Liberty last week, and I have only good things to say about the people at the courthouse where I reviewed a ton of files. They were wonderful. The Liberty courthouse is the oldest in the state that was not burned, so they have excellent records and the files there are in good order as three couples from LDS just spent the last year and one half recording everything there. I also visited a number of cemeteries and will be adding photos online at Tarver-Gen as time allows. I will be scanning a lot of the records to make them available also. I'm trying to arrange my schedule to go back for this meeting. Can't say yet if I can take the time off again so soon :) If I can make the trip, and anything I already copied is helpful to you AND you have your copier with you, you are welcome to copy from my newly acquired files, which will save you the time of going through these particular files at the courthouse.
