    3. Hi Sharon and All Woodworth Relatives, I’m a recent addition to this list. I’m very interested in my Woodworth family connections. What little I have, I would really hate to lose. I will follow as best I can whichever format is chosen. I LOVE the Woodworth Facebook page. Is their some Facebook product that would serve the same function as the RootsWeb product? Thanks for including me Susan Field On Sat, Jan 11, 2020 at 9:44 AM Sharon Bias, AVATAR Business Systems via WOODWORTH <woodworth@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Hi All > Ancestry has announced they are shutting down the entire Rootsweb > community as of 3/2/20. 3. Hi All Ancestry has announced they are shutting down the entire Rootsweb community as of 3/2/20.  They are making some arrangement to store archived items, but no new postings.  Rootsweb has never been the friendliest of web sites.   They wouldn't accept posting of pictures, spreadsheets, etc.  They also had problems with any user having an AOL email.  First, is there any interest in keeping a message board going for your surname?  Please send me an e-mail if you're still interested. I'm looking at several alternatives to Rootsweb.  My Heritage and FamilySearch both offer sites, but are tied to their parent company like Rootsweb is to Ancestry.  Groups.io appears to be a free alternative.  They do offer a paid subscription which may or may not be of interest at a later date. An excellent article on the subject can be found on the Eastman website:  https://blog.eogn.com/2020/01/10/groups-io-the-do-it-yourself-replacement-for-disappearing-message-boards-and-mailing-lists/ Please provide feedback on this issue, sooner rather than later. 3. Hi Sharon and all, A move by Family Tree DNA has recently removed the concerns by many about using DNA companies's DNA resources to identify crooks using DNA without DNA participants's permission. The DNA match where that occurred was by a free volunteer database resource set up by Family Tree DNA, and they have shut down that resource. The resource databases were located at YSEARCH.ORG and MITOSEARCH.ORG. Those two databases allowed one to enter DNA data from competing DNA companies, such as 23andME, FTDNA, Ancestry, and more, and the database would find matches for you ... all free. But it is shut down now, and the privacy concerns that existed before, that came to light during a criminal case, are no more. For more information on the shut down of YSEARCH.ORG and MITOSEARCH.ORG, see https://mailchi.mp/familytreedna.com/important-info-for-ysearch-and-mitosearch-members?e=57d20622f7 Marvin "Woody" Woodworth -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Bias, AVATAR Business Systems via WOODWORTH <woodworth@rootsweb.com> To: woodworth <woodworth@rootsweb.com>; stapp <stapp@rootsweb.com>; tabar <tabar@rootsweb.com> Cc: Sharon Bias, AVATAR Business Systems <sgbelverta@aol.com> Sent: Thu, Apr 26, 2018 8:37 pm Subject: [WOODWORTH] How private is your DNA? Hi All, It turns out one the most dangerous murderer and rapist was caught when the Sacramento County Crime lab found a familia match on a DNA genealogy site. An article about the process is below: http://www.sacbee.com/latest-news/article209908769.html This raises some serious questions. Are genealogy sites selling information to law enforcement or providing it for free? Does law enforcement have to get a warrant to get more information from the genealogy site? Is there anything on the release form people sign when submitting their DNA that makes it clear that results can be given to law enforcement? Ten years ago, we worried that DNA would tell you that your brother wasn't your brother. Now we have to think about your DNA sending your brother to prison. In this case, I'm very thankful at the results. I was living within miles of where he raped and murdered people. But I also feel there are questions that need to be answered about how commercial companies handle our DNA. I look forward to hearing from members about this issue. Sharon G. 3. Hi All, We are having some growing pains with the list. First, whatever info you previously had saved as a bookmark in your search engine, delete it. It ain't going to work no more. You are probably going to have to get a new user name and password with Rootsweb. The place to start is the link below. http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail The instructions are only moderately clear. What stumped me was I needed to get a new user ID and password even though I was a listowner. The software will send you an e-mail link you have to click before you become a member. After you are approved as a member, go to the upper right hand corner of that screen and click mail settings. This will show you what lists you are currently assigned to. Now, if you search on surnames, and you find the one you want, click on that link. It will take you to a screen to become a member. Now the tricky thing is that I haven't yet figured out how to manually add a member as the administrator. I can delete, but not add. The link listed above does offer some print screen pictures that will more or less get you going. I will continue in my hunt for how to manually add a member to the list. Sharon G. 3. With regard to Legacy, I am in total agreement with Keith. I have used several genealogy software programs over the years including FTM, the family history centers, ancestral and then I found Legacy which I have used for the last 12 years. It does everything I want it to including linking with Clooz. I have several genealogy friends who have now switched to Legacy. It is easy to use but includes many high level functions. There is a free version that you can try. I started with that and then subsequently moved to the Deluxe version which as Keith said is very inexpensive. Good luck in making your decision. The subsequent versions that attempted to go to Windoze all failed. I had a lot of work every time I wanted to export a file to GEDCOM and then to upload it; sometimes the upload took over 30 hours. Ahh, the "good old days." Eventually, I had to let go of Roots III and find something that was almost as good. I shopped and shopped, trying the demo versions of many programs. I eventually settled for Legacy. I used the Free version for a while and then upgraded to the "Deluxe" version ($25 USD). I started with Ver 6.0, went through 7.0 and am now on 8.0. Each full upgrade cost about $20 USD but the next "generation" is usually 3-4 years. For example, the current edition of Legacy is Build 8.0.0.536. Yep, 536 tweaks and updates, all free. As you know, my website has been around for a while and I keep updating by exporting the full GEDCOM from Legacy to my site module. You do need to be careful with your export, particularly if, like me, you use diacritics. Legacy handles them quite well, but the program you export to may have issues. Exports in any mode are fast and seamless. I guess the only negative comment is that I do not find Legacy quite as intuitive as the old Roots III, but maybe I am just stuck in the past. I am a keyboard kind of person and Legacy certainly is more for the mouse users, but you get used to it. 3. Hi Sharon, I'm now using Ancestral Quest 14 because it does the best job of importing individual notes, references, and media files from a GEDCOM export. AQ14 also has a great family book publisher which is one of the features that was important to me. It's inexpensive compared to FTM, and they have a free basic version so you can try it out first. They also have a tutorial on how to bring your FTM data into AQ14. http://www.ancquest.com/ftm/ -----Original Message----- From: woodworth-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:woodworth-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sharon.Bias@lists2.rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2016 5:00 PM To: stapper1@aol.com; stapp@rootsweb.com; woodworth@rootsweb.com; tabar@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WOODWORTH] [STAPP] Family Tree Maker software going away Hi, That product isn't sold at Amazon, so I didn't see it. Ancestry wants to keep your files on-line and charge you a monthly or yearly fee for that privilege. And who knows if they're going to share your data or not. I want a stand alone software I can put on my PC and upload information as needed. On Amazon, I found genealogy software called: Family History6, Family Tree Heritage, RootsMagic7, and Legacy. There are older versions of FTM available. What's everyone using and how do you like it? Please post to the Rootsweb accounts so we can pass the info along. 2. Yup, the whole DNA thing was badly handled by Ancestry. I have over 20,000 people in my database. Would Shared Tree handle that many files? Sharon G.
