    1. Re: [SWITZ] CENSUS
    2. The first "city" census was taken in 1764 in the city of Bern. At the direction of Napoleon, a general census of Canton Bern was taken in 1798. (This is now available from Picton Press in a 3-volume set.) The first federal census was taken during April 1836 thru February 1838 and was noteworthy for being incomplete. In 1841 a more accurate census was taken. In 1850 the census took into account only those members of the population with rights of residence and not the population actually present at the date of the the census. In 1860 the census information was more complete and it was improved in 1870 and 1880. Censuses have continued every ten years since 1860. Copies can be obtained from both state and city archives. Especially in the Canton of AARGAU. Do they take census at specific times? Like we do in America or is at random? Thanks for any help you can give. I am still in search of info on Jacob Bopp. Pat H.
