Jacob's mother came from Hesse-Darm (Darmstadt) in Germany, not too far north of the Swiss border.  Before Germany became a unified country the different kingdoms or duchies or other regions were often reported by Americans and treated by US enumerators as separate countries, so you will often find something like this given as a birthplace instead of the generic term "Germany". At least it helps narrow down the area to search for the next step in your pedigree. Ardis >>>>    My ggrandfather, Jacob Haney (Hany) was born in Switzerland. The 1880 Census states that his mother was born in H.DARM.  I do not know what that means. Could someone on the list help me to know where this area might be?
