If the latter, what church parish in Bern City? 2) do you know the date of his passport, or the approximate date, closer than sometime in 1861 (which is better than we usually get)? With the information you already have provided, should be no problem getting the birth certificate. With the additional info I have requested, it'll be a walk in the park.
